In Holt. Burt, Wayne and many
other counties in our state the posi
tion of county superintendent is filled
by a woman. It is said that the for
eign voter does not take to a woman
in county offices, but down in old
Cumings county where the German
people overwhelmingly dominate, they
have had a woman county superin
tendent, Miss Miller, for years and
will have no other. Indeed, this year
the politicians could find no one to
run against her. In every county
where a lady has succeeded a gentle
man as superintendent the record
shows that the lady has given better
satisfaction than the man.—Pierce
Call.
Out in Platte county some fellow
for a joke at the recent primary
wrote in the name of a rock-ribbed
democrat under the county clerk
heading on the republican ballot.
Not another vote was cast for that
office by the republicans, and as a
consequence the democrat is the re
publican nominee. This amounts to
little, as it will of course be but a
joke, but it shows one of the many
defects in the present primary ballot.
This could easily be corrected by re
quiring a candidate to receive a'cer
tain number—say ten per cent—of
the party vote before entitling him
to a place upon the fall ballot.—
Plattsmouth Journal.
Here is A. .1. Russell’s recipe for
staying young: ” Don't be in a hurry
to get old. Let the children jump
on you and jounce a few times. Get
down and roll over on the floor with
them, and get your whiskers alL
tangled up with the baby’s little
go-cart. Set up the candy and get
the joyful noise into your system.
Don’t be afraid of getting your
enamel scratched. Teach them how
to climb a tree and make a noise like
a wheelbarrow. Let them bore
gimlet holes in your wooden leg and
step on your foot for a ride when
you walk. In this way you keep in
their favor. It is a tine tiling to be
liked by children.” Amen to that.
Bro. Beushausen in liis Times com
plained last week that we had spilled
printer's ink over him. Charley
should have gotten out from under
the fountain, liis lame explanation
of liis attack upon Walt Weare, re
publican candidate for county clerk,
shows a badly crippled state. The
Northwestern called the Times to
account, not only for its unwarranted
and false saatement ascribing socia
listic tendencies to Mr. Weare, but
for Mr. Beushausen's personal asser
tion to us that Mr. Weare was a
Socialist, and that he had proof in
the shape of a letter'from someone
of somewhere to that effect, but care
fully refrained from stating where or
by whom. If Mr. Beushausen has
proof that Mr. Weare is a socialist,
why does he not produce his proof,
instead of the cowardly innuendo
and covert allusion, even avoid
ing naming the person attacked, and
later using that fact to cover his
defamatory tracks. Mr. Weare does
not have to answer Mr. Beushansen’s
false insinuation through his (Mr.
(Beushausen's) paper, but does so
through the proper channel, the
Northwestern, the accredited mouth
piece of the republican party in this
county, and common courtesy demand
ed that Mr. Beushausen should thro’
his own paper and by himself in his
editorial columns give Mr. Weare the
henetit of the denial of what the
times falsely ascribed to the repuli
lican candidate for countv clerk.
V\U1 Mr. Beushausen do so, or will
he with utter lack of common news
paper courtesy fail to do justice in
the matter?
The State Teachers’ Association
meets in Lincoln on the 3rd, 4th and
5th of November 1909.
Last year’s splendid attendance
demonstrated the wisdow of lixingan
earlier date than the winter holidays
and a date when all teachers, school
officers, and patrons are most in
terested in education. The Associa
tion is not a holiday celebration—it
it *is a meeting of earnest men and
women for mutual help and inspira
tion in the work of making Nebras
ka’s public schools the most effective
in the world.
The executive committee, the local
committee and the Lincoln Commer
cial Club have given the most careful
attention to every detail of program
and local entertainment required for
ten thousand school people.
A splendid program cannot benefit
those schools whose officers and teach
ers are not in attendance.
Where- school boards have not al
ready granted their teachers the
three days on regular pay. the super
intendent of the town and city school
and the teacher of the country school
should place the matter before the
| board and give positive assurance
that the time asked will be devoted
to improving the work of the school.
If necessary dismiss school and make
up the time later.
You are engaged in a great vmrk
for a great state. Be patriotic.
A. L. Caviness,
For Executive Committee.
The Waitress was Game
The Hastings Tribune prints this
incident in the life of one peddler:
The dapper little traveling man
glanced at the menu card and then
looked up at the pretty waitress,
“Nice day, little one,” he began.
“Yes it is,” she replied. “And so
was yesterday, and my name is Ella,
and I know I’m a little peach and
have pretty blue eyes and I’ve been
here quite a while and I like the
place and I don’t think I’m too nice
a girl to work in a hotel; if I did I’d
quit my job, and my wages are satis
factory and I don’t know if there is
a dance or a show in town tonight
and if there is I shall not go with
you, and - I’m from the country and
I’m a respectable girl and my brother
is cook in this hotel and lie weighs
200 pounds and last week he wiped
up this dining room with a fresh
fifty-dollar-a-month traveling man
who tried to make a date with me.
Now what’ll you have.” The dapper
little traveling man said he wasn’t
very hungry and a cup of coffee and
some hot cakes would do.
An exact definition of a gentleman
has been tried many times, never
perhaps with entirely satisfactory re
sults. Little Sadie had never heard
of any of the various definitions, but
she managed to throw a gleam of
light on the subject, albeit one
touched with unconscious cynicism.
The word was in the spelling-lesson,
and I said:
“Sadie, what is a gentleman?”
“Please, ma'am,” she answered, “a
gentleman’s a man you don’t know
very well.”—Woman’s Home Com
panion for October.
