Political Announcements
FOR COUNTY TREASURER
I hereby announce mysell as a candidate for
the office of County Treasurer on the demo
cratic ticket, subject to the action of the
electors at the primaries. O. F. Peterson.
FOR SHERIFF
I hereby announce myself as a candidate for
re-election to the otlice of Sheriff of Sherman
county. Nebraska, subject to the will of the
Republican voters at the coming primary elec
tions. Respt., L. M. Williams.
To the voters of Sherman Coun
ty, Nebraska
Soliciting your support and votes
for the nomination to the office of
County Treasurer and applying for
endorsement by the People's Inde
pendent and the Democratic Party
organizations, I here make known
my candidacy for this nomination.
To this announcement and the race
for the office and its emoluments,
I confess that I am not urged by
“Many Friends’’ as is the custom, nor
is there that loud and persistent call
at large for my services—as it should
regularly be—but the announcement
proceeds, so far as I know, not from
any weightier reasons than my desire
to hold the office with your kind
indulgence. Very truly yours,
Louis Reix.

E. B. Gurney, a banker of Fremont,
is said to have shied his castor in the

first so far named. We do not wish

somebody please tell us who he is and
just what particular service he has
done the party to entitle him to the
honor?
A report is abroad to the effect that
Governor Shallenberger is in favor of
county option. It is to be hoped the
report is true and that he can line
his party up on the question with
him. With both parties standing for
county option, the state will vote
out three-fourths of its saloons and
enjoy more real prohibition than it
would under a prohibition constitu
tion, and the saloons will be forced
out of palitics.—Aurora Republican.
The partial eclipse of last Thursday
evening came on as perschedule, and
was witnessed by a large numlier of
our people. According to the editor's
Waterbury, the first noticed was at
6:18, the greatest part of the eclipse
being at 7 o’clock, and the shadow
passing off at precisely 7:40. The
shadow appeared at the upper right
hand corner of Old Sol, covered about
a thid of the sun's surface and disap
peared from the upper center of the
bright luminary. At its greatest,
the shadow made the sun appear as
if a good bite had been taken from its
upper right hand corner.
Several of the Northwestern's read
ers have taken issue with us in our
article ot the eclipse of 1809. One
insists the eclipse was in 1870, instead
of the year we stated: another is sure
the eclipse came on in the middle of
the afternoon: still another chat the
totality occured about 4 p. m., etc.
The editor did not state positively
the time, but to the best of his^rec
ollection the shadow was first notice
able at noon or within about an hour
afterward. All however, agree the
event was during harvest time, pre
sumably in August, and all, with one
exception, claim the year 1809 was
correctly dated. What do you say?
It was amusing- to read the mislead
ing article published in the “Times
Indipendent.” last week, in an effort
to justify the expenditure of 9000 for
railroad transportation by Gov. Shal
lenberger. The facts are that out of
the $1500 apporpriated for travelling
expenses for Gov. Sheldon during his
term of office there was $600 unex
pended, and for fear that tills tax
payers’ money would lapse back into
the people’s treasury, if not spent
prior to August 1st, Gov. Shal lenber
ger made a blanket purchase of rail
road transportation for the full
amount, which leaves him the whole
amouna of the $1000 appropriated by
the lost legislature to draw from,
thereby permitting his access to$l,600
for traveling expenses as against
$000 actually used by Governor Shel
don. Watch the press of the “Re
formers-’? tell about the legislative
appropriations, and their silence about
actual expenses. Bali! Re men and
tell the people the truth.
