Mr. F. M. Henry, who has been urged to make the race by his many friends, informs us that in the present state of his health he positively will not allow his name to be presented at the primaries. Tom Lay, who lias had the matter under consideration, has not up to this writ ing (Tuesday) consented to make the race for the republican nominatign for the above office. Unless some patriot comes forward by Saturdav of this week, it will necessitate a petition containing 200 names to get a nominee for the clerkship before the republican primaries. Local Overflow. Mr. John Fowler, living some 12 miles northwest of Loup City, in Washington township, suicided last Saturday morning by taking some three ounces of carbolic acid. Such was the news received in this city about the middle of the forenoon. About noon, Sheriff Williams, Coroner Main, County Attorney Mathews, S. N. Sweetland and the editors of the Times and the Northwestern drove out to the home of the suicide, where a jury was empaneled, consisting of E. A. Brown, S. N. Sweetland, G. E. Aubert, John Tucker, S. A. Tucker and J. W. Burleigh, who from the facts laid before them rendered a find ing that said John Fowler came to his death by his own hand by taking carbolic acid with suicidal Intent. The facts brought out by the inquest were as follows: Mr. and Mbs. Fow ler had had some trouble the evening before, and after deceased had gone to sleep abour 11 o’clock in the night. Mrs. Fowler, in fear of her life, and because of threats made by deceased, slipped out of the room and house, unbeknown to any of the household, save her eldest daughter, and fled in her stocking feet to the home of Chas. Mills, about a half a mile dis tant, where she begged to be taken at once to Loup City, claiming to be in mortal fear of her life. Mr. Mills, in his evidence, claimed he did not want to mix up in the affair and showed her the way to the home of Edward Fagan, a half mile further, where Miss Fagan hitched up a team and drove her to this city, where she arrived at tne nome oi a. r. neynoius about 4 o’clock in the morning. At the home of deceased the wife was not missed by her husband till morn ing, when he began a systematic search about the place and to the neighbors aforesaid, when becoming convinced she had fled to town, re turned home, dressfed himself in his best clothes, and after dictating a letter, written by his 17-year-old daughter, to his father at .Aurora to come after him and give him a burial at Aurora, told his children he was going to take his own life. They at tempted to disuade him and tried by force and pleading to prevent the awful deed, but he forced himself in to the front room of the house and returning out of doors swallowed the fleavy dose of carbolic acid, first com manding his daughter to drive im mediately to town and mail the letter written, which she did. He then walked or rather staggered into his room, threw himself on his bed and died inside of ten minutes. From the evidence of the wife and daugh ters, it was found that on at least three different occasions, deceased had beaten his wife, and that some time before she had left him, came to town and thence, to Sarpy county to her parents, but on his protesta tions and the further deeding of an 80-acre farm to her, and promise that! in the future he would treat her j kindly, she had returned to him, but i within a week had resumed his ill- j treatment. Outside of his exiiibi-! tions of uncontrollable temper in re-j gard to his wife, deceased was kind j to liis children and all who have had J business with him claim lie was kind,! considerate and pleasant . His father | and three brothers came up from Aurora the same evening and Monday j accompanied the body to Aurora for; burial. Air. Fowler was well-to-do so: far as this world’s goods were con cerned and leaves his family with a comfortable competence of between *25,000 and *40.00o. Local Overflow. Corn needs rain badly.
