Mr. and Mrs. Will Annabel of Poole arrived last Sunday on a visit of several days to H. L. Bell and family in Webster township. The ladies are sisters. Dr. Barnes, eye-specialist, of Omaha, will be. at the St. Elmo hotel, Thurs day, the 25th inst. Remember the date and call as early as convenient. We understand Lela Chase and Lena Smith are so delighted with the sand hills that they have filed on claims up there and may yet become owners of large ranches. Pil ger and Becker brothers of Grand Island, with music' by the Grand Island orchestra, was pronounced a very enjoyable occasion by the goodly number in attendance. The infant child of Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Oltmann died last Thursday after noon from a complication of whooping cough and lung fever and was buried Friday moraine from the Baptist church. Culley and two daugh ters and Miss Betli Zimmerman re turned from the Jamestown Expo sition Tuesday afternoon. A. L. Zimmerman arid family are expected heme in a few days. Grandma Gilbert left for Lincoln Tuesday, for further treatment of her eyes. She will be absent perhaps two weeks, and confidence is ex pressed that her eyesight will have been permanently restored on Jier return. The services were of unusual in terest at the Presbyterian church last Sunday morning. Besides an un usually interesting sermon from Pastor McEwen, the choir gave a very sweet anthem and Miss Beatrice Nightingale gave a choice solo, the best we have so far heard from the talented young lady and over which she received many sincere compli ments. Mrs. M. H. Mathew, Mrs. H. B. Musser, Miss Esther Musser and Mr. A. B. Strauch and his good mother, all left for Denver Monday morning for an outing. Next Monday C. C. Carlson and Arthur Eisner will leave for Denver also, to join Mr. Strauch and go up into the mountains on a Ashing and hunting trip of three or four weeks. Owing to the threatening weather, the union meeting of the Presbyte rian and Baptist congregations was held at the Presbyterian church, Sun day evening, instead of in the public square at contemplated, Pastor Guern sey of the Baptist church preaching a very able discourse. Should the weather be favorable, next Sunday evening’s union meeting will be held in the square, otherwise at the Bap tist church. John Youngquest came down from Loup City last Saturdaday where he had been spending a week with his sons on the ranch near that place. Mr. Youngquest reports everything good in the way of growing crops and especially cattle are doing fine. The night before he reports an inch and a half of rainfall in Sherman county. Many Hamilton county people are up there and we are pleased to hear of their prosperous conditions.—Aurora Republican. Will Zimmerman was one of the principals in an exciting runaway, Monday about noon. The other was his little trotter, “Rex.” While driv ing down past the U. P. depot, the horse became frightened attthe trains and when Will brought him up sharp the snap in one of the lines broke. With only one line, Will whirled the horse around in a circle over the tracks a few times till the buggy began to crumble, when he concluded to let the horse have his own way and sought the life line of terra firma. “Rex” left to himself hauled the rem nants of the deceased vehicle out to Gene Miller’s across the river, where Will found the horse all sound but not enough left of the buggy to tell what it was. A letter from the editors son, Frank W. Burleigh, stationed at Fort ress Monroe, Virginia, under date of the 8th instant, speaks of meeting A. L. Zimmerman and family and Mrs. Gulley and daughters, who are visiting- the Jamestown Exposition, and who expressed themselves as hav ing a delightful time. It was the first meeting the boy had with any one from home since he went there two and a half years since, and he said it gave him that homesick feel ing which cannot be expressed by a boy so far from hbme and loved ones, and at the same time making the occasion one of joy and pleasure to him. He is counting the days un til h1s time of service is over and be will be one of the happiest of mortals when he can be home once 3: Mrs. Frank Otlewski is reported very ill. Frank Otlewski so far recovered his recent injuries as to be able to come to town last Saturday. The editor’s baby has been quite ill the past few days, but is much better as we go to press. Alex Baillie has had the insurance on his burned residence satisfactorily adjusted, as he informs us. Miss Winnie Miller arrived from Lincoln last evening on a visit to her many relatives and friends. Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Eisner returned last evening from their visit to Ger many, during which Mr. Eisner says they had the time of their lives. Frank Robbins is looking after Frank Foster’s shop while the latter is oil picnicking. That’s the right sort of brothership to exist between our tonsorial artists. By agreement among the merchants all the stores will close hereafter at ! 8 o’clock each evening except Satur days. ■ Mrs. J. L. Hawk left yesterday morning for a visit with friends in Virginia and to see the Jamestown Exposition. * Geo. Dinsdale shipped eight cars of cattle to Omaha Monday. Robert Dinsdale and Jas. Johansen accom | panied the shipment. The Industrial Society of the Pres ! byterian church met with Mrs. Gene Tracy yesterday, four miles up the river, and a most enjoyable day was had by all. Judge Angier and wife leave for northeast Iowa about the first of August for a month’s visit with a i daughter and to give the judge a much needed vacation. The families of A. E. Chase, W. S. I Waite and W. H. Rettenmayer went ; up the river last Saturday evening, where the Chases will camp out a week, while the others remained only over Sunday. The editor goes to Omaha this afternoon to purchase new adv. and job type and to meet Miss Pearl Bridgeford of Jefferson, Iowa, who will visit a few week’s here with her sister, Mrs. M’Belle Burleigh. The subjects of next Sunday’s dis courses at the M. E. church are: Morning, “God’s Love Tested,” even ing, “Earth’s Last Possibility.” A cordial invitation is extended to all to come and worship with us on that day. Mesdames Ed. Angier and Callaliam entertain the Entre Nous club this afternoon at their picnic campon the river. The husbands of the club members are also invited to come down to the camp for a feast of good things at supper time. Just our luck to be absent at this particular time. We received a few days since a letter from Dr. Long at Garrison who declares himself as feeling fine. Crops in his section are the best ever, while corn is looking well and fruit about a half crop. The doctor sends greets ings to all his friends here and still looks upon Loup City as home to him. Were it not for our blushes, we would quote the flattering words the doctor gives to the Northwestern comparing it in point of news and makeup among the best weeklies of the state. A new post office regulation law which is now in effect makes it no longer necessary to buy a special de livery stamp to.secure immediate de livery of a letter. Ten cents in stamps <;* any denomination, in addition to the ordinary postage, is all that is re quired for transmission of letters and packages for special delivery. When the usual special delivery stamp is not used the words •“for special de livery” should be written prominently on the letter or package. If not so designated the letter or package may be sent by the clerk as registered mail which is not specially delivered. Cleora Notes. Everett Sickles is working for Clias. Barnes. Foss took two loads of hogs to market Wednesday morning. Charles Sickles is enjoying a visit from a cousin from Wisconsin. Mrs. Etta Bell’s sister and husband from Poole are visiting her this week. Crops in our vicinity are fine and some few are through wheat harvest. Jimmie says the mail will be a little late on account of the warm weather. The Cleoria Aid Society meets with Mrs. Chas.
