The railway commission rules it is
unlawful for street railways to carry
firemen or policeman free or to grant
special rates to postmen and others.
In an opinion by Justice Harlan,
the United States supreme court holds
that the suicide of an insnred person
shall not constitute a valid defense
in resisting payment on the policy.
Kennison, the murderer of Editor
Sam Cox. who was found guilty of
murder in the second degree, will be
allowed bail if he can furnish $15,0»W
security. If he succeeds, he will
likely give Scotts Bluffs county a wide
berth on account of his health.
Propose to Vote Railroad Bonds.
Broken Bow. Neb. April 23.—The
railroad meeting called at Westerville
last Saturday lor the purpose of en
couraging the railroad movement
from Loup City to Broken Bow via
Westerville was largely attended. The
citizens of Westerville, were very en
thusiastic in their support of" the
project, promising to vote precinct
bonds to the full extent of the law.
and also took largely of the capital
stock of the company. The sub
scription books of the company were
left in charge of the committee ap
pointed by the meeting, who were
given instructions to secure stock to
the amount of $1 per acre for six
milts on each side of the line. The
company promoting the proposed line
is the Broken Bow & Western Bail
road company. The officers of the
company were present and addressed
the meeting.

II. Mumey's daughter is on the sick
list this week.
I). Mumey spent Sunday with his
brother, Harry Mumey.
Mrs. Martin Koch is able to be up
again after a long illness.
Mr. and Mrs. Andy Wilson attended
the wedding at Pleasanton this week.
I. H. Vanscov and family spent
Sunday with liis brother, Laban,
living few miles south of Havenna.
Mrs. Jas. Gray of Wiggle Creel: is
reported very sick with tone con
sumption and is not expected to live.
A grand up-to-date social and
supper will be given by the Ilebekah's
after the initiation. The Loup City
team is expected to be present.
The dance given in II. Reasland's
barn last Saturday night was not well
attended on account of the cold. The
dance given in Stark’s barn was well
attended.
Mr. and Mrs. Win. Carrutli and
family, accompanied by Mr. and Mrs.
L. Sparks, left Tuesday morning to
attend the wedding of Miss .Julia
Husa. sister of Mrs. Carruth, at
Pleasanton. Mrs. Sparks will make a
visit with her sister, Mrs. A. Wilson
of Poole Siding.
Another grand ball game at Rock
ville Sunday last. Boelus crossed bats
with Rockville, score. 12 to 13 in
favor of the latter, 10 innings, after
which the Austin team played 5
innings, score 30 te 6, when the game
being so one-sided it was given up.

R. 1. Barrick was hauling cane seed
of his own raising to Loup City on
Wednesday.
Joe Kowalewski and Henry Apple
gave Carrier Conger some nice meat
and eggs this week.
The farmers on the Route are
doing some line farming this spring.

Miss Ada Riley is again visiting at.
the H. L. Bell home, after several
weeks’ visit at Poole, Neb.
Miss Maude Reynolds and brother
in-law drove over from Mason Ciiy
and returned last Saturday.
Wright Reynolds is visiting at Mason
City this week. There must be some
attraction over there lor Wright.
Guy Eaton came home from Chil
dress, Texas. Tuesday night, for a
two weeks' visit with his brother and
sister on Clear Creek.
District No. 44, Miss Price teacher,
gave a basket social last Friday night
and all report a good time. The
object was to raise money for a book
case for the school.
The little white dog that follows
the mail wagon forgot there was a
Sunday last week and made the trip
over the route on schedule time, so
report people on the route.
Miss Lizzie Peterson had a narrow
escape in a runaway last week. While
she was cutting corn stalks the team
ran down a steep hill and struck a
barbed wire fence at the foot of the
hill. No damage to speak of.
It looks as though Loup City was
to be a railroad center in the near
future, as surveyors were on Cob
Creek looking up a good road bed to
Clear Creek, thence to Broken Bow.
This would be fine for the people on
the creek as they have very bad roads
to get anywhere with their grain.

Bessie Stuart has left the fourth
grade.
The boys of the First Intermediate
have as yet no tardy marks.
William Rowe was a visitor of the
High School Thursday afternoon.
The school enjoyed a half-holiday
Monday afternoon, thanks to the
Board.
Marie Miller's name has been taken
off the roll on account of her removal
to Wyoming.
The Eleventh Graders •‘trotted”
the Twelfth graders and teachers
around about the town and then
‘‘rounded up” at Minshull’s where
they enjoyed games and refreshments.
