Attorney General Thompson has rendered an opinion that line live stock must be valued for taxation in the class to which it belongs and not merely at its market value per pound for beef or pork. Here are some very interesting items from the clerk's office, which are worth remembering: Real estate transfers in Sherman county for March, just past, $458,508: real estate mortgages filed during that month, $128,655, and released during the same period, $60,712. Kennison, the man who murdered Editor Sam Cox at Manatare, in the west part of the state, during the winter, has been sentenced to 24 years in the penitentiary. Evidently there was a slight slip in the rope of justice or Kennison would have stretched hemp instead. If Lincoln and Lancaster county could throw Burns. McKesson, Bud Lindsey, Elmer Stephensen and a few other fellows of that ilk over the transom and evpunge their political air of that sort of foulness, it would be for their good and the good of the people of the state. Whatever mistakes Bro. Brown may have made during his stay in Lincoln as a legislator, the Northwestern wants right here to go on record as believing they were errors of judg ment rather than of heart. While Bro. Brown is of opposite political faith, his work in the legislature has been clean and honest and right as he saw it. While the Northwestern has seen fit to differ with him on the ter minal taxation bill, jet we believe his vote was recorded honestly as against the measure. If it proves lie was right, the Northwestern will frankly so acknowledge: if he was wrong, we feel assured he will freely say so as the merits of the law are proven. The legislature has changed the game laws with emergency clause. The most important law passed wa^ the prohibition of the sale of game in any manner, also the sale of fish j taken from the public waters of this state. There is no open season on deer, antelope and beaver. The open season on all game begins Sept. 15th, instead of Sept. 1st, as formerly. The season closes on prairie chickens the same as before, but the season on ducks and all other water fowls doses April 10th, instead of April loth, as formerly. There is no open season between April 10th and Sept, loth, and it is unlawful to hunt game dur ing this time. The season for killing quail was not changed. Rockville Items. Geo. Woten drove down to Baelus Friday. Tflb basket social given at the school house last Friday night was well attended, everybody being satis fied with their partners and suppers. The total receipts was some $45. A surprise and farewell party was given to Mr. and Mrs. Davis at the home of W. M. Smelser last Tuesday evening, where they had been asked to spend the evening. About 9 o’clock a number of friends walked in and the evening was pleasantly spent with games, after which ice-cream and cake was served. Mr. and Mrs. Davis were presented with a beautiful silver cake dish, and at a late hour all departed for their many homes. Mr. and Mrs. Davis left Monday for their new home at Grand Island. We regret their leaving but wish them success in the future. The dance given inAdolph Burman’s new house last week Saturday night was well attended. There will be Sunday school every Sunday in the school house at Kocl - ville. The Rockville girls said they used to think Willard Lay was a bright young man, but have given up all hopes now as we hear he has married a Boelus girl. Mrs, Ida Sturdevant and Miss Rose Sturdevant of Sargent and Miss May Pubry from Loup City took in the dance a week ago Saturday night and stayed over Sunday. Cleora Noted, It seems so nice to see the green hills once more after the tedioas old winter and the farmers are hnstling o ice more. Born, April 6th, to J, C. Sorensen and wife another fine boy. I have not heard direct from J. C. but methinks lie’s a good Roosevelt man. Mrs. Etta Bell left Tuesday morn ing for Pool Siding to visit her sister, Mrs. Annabel. Mias Lena Zwink is visiting her grandparents for a month at Ashton. Mr. and Mrs. ParkhursVleave today for their new home. Miss Ethel Guilford visited with Mrs. Ed. Shipley last week. Mrs. Boyce is on the mend, but we learn was quite sick. John Warrick’s baby was quite sick but is better at this writing. Miss Mary Price closes her school in the McMullin district April 19tli with a basket entertainment. All are cor dially invited. John Warrick is suffering from a severe attack of rheumatism. Chas. Guilford and family are once more able to be out to church, but Charlie is not feeling the best. The bonnet season has come so think the Cleora Aid. as they have made some thirty odd bonnets for sale and more wanted, but will pull in their shingle for a while. Rev. and Mrs. Zike and Miss Zelma stopped over Saturday night with Mrs. Foss. .v young man irom Kearney is com ing to this vicinity to get up a music class, so all who wash to take lessons should wait for him as he can give lessons on any instrument at fifty cents an hour or less by term. The Cleora Sunday school met with a goodly attendance last Sunday, some thirty-nine being present. We extend to all a hearty welcome to all every Sunday at 10 o'clock. It was reported that Miss Emma Bell was in town Saturday all broken out with small pox, which was not true as Emma never felt better in her life than at present. On last Sunday the good people met and organized a Sabbath school at the Mathews school house, we understand to be held irl the afternoon. The Summers, Barnes, Hunt and F. O. Johnson families are sufferers with la grippe this week. There was much excitement Mon day near Swaderer's over a tire, but by hard work it was kept from doing much damage. Mr. Carlston had quite a nice little runaway Tuesday afternoon. In turn ing around in a little draw* the double trees broke and the horses started back to town full speed, but were caught by Ross Warrick. No serious damage but a complete scare. ('has. Barnes' father and mother from Smith Center, Kansas, drove in on them Tuesday evening very unex pectedly. Charlie svalks on air now as he had not seen them for over three years. “Economy” Pumping Engine Safe, quiet, easy to start and run. Motive Pewer ■OT AIR. Fcei, — Gasoline, Coal or Wood.
