W. BURLEIGH. Ed. ami Pub.
It is useless to bandy words w ith an
ignoramus, a madman or a fool, and
more especially when these form a
trinity in one fellow’s make-up.
Comment further is unnecessary.
Evidently Sherman county is con
sidered as good, safe ground for a re
publican majority this fall, as from
present outlook no spell-binders are
to show it how during this campaign.
By electing Carle McKinnie as rep
resentative and R. M. Thomson state
senator, you are indirectly upholding
the administration of Presdent Roose
velt by electing men who wl 1 vote
for Norris Brown for U. S. senator,
and Norris is every inch of his gray
matter a Roosevelt adherent.
In justice to the Northwestern’s
most excellent and correct lady typo,
we remark that the resolutions pur
porting to be passed by the Woodmen
and printed in our columns last week
were printed as handed in. et liter
atuin, et punctuatum. etcetera. Her
intelligence would preclude the idea
that she was as ignorant as the writer
of them.
R. P. Starr in the county attorney's
office will look to the liest interests of
Sherman county and will prove a
faithful servant of the people. He is
ambitious, energetic, watchful and
ever on the alert, fie is honest, com
petent. faithful to all business en
trusted to his care in his private legal
business, which is prima facie evi
dence that the same will obtain on
his elevation to the county's legal
business. Rob Starr will prove the
right man in the right place in the
county attorney's office.
W. R. Mellor returned last Satnr
day from his visit to the Missouri
and Illinois state fairs. The former
did not make as good a showing in
all lines of exhibits as our own Ne
braska, though its buildings were
pronouncedly lietter and more nu
merous. while the Illinois fair, con
ceded one of the best in the United
States, is confessedly much better.
Hut keep such men as Mellor. Rudge
and their compatriots hold of the lead
strings aud in a few years Nebraska
will even “show” Illinois in all points
of vantage.
Contemptible and malicious false
hood is inexcusable in anyone, even
in a man(?) whose sanity is' in ques
tion. This thought is brought out
by the accusation emanating from a
cesspool that Rro. Brown made over
tures last fall to form a combination
politically with said cesspool. While
politically we are antagonistic to Rro.
Brown, we, in common with all de
cent members of all political parties,
believe him incapable of such duplic
ity. and it did not need that gentle
man's indignant denial to refute said
accusation. Mr. Brown is truthful
and a gentleman.
And so Omaha republicans are going
to show their cloven foot in regard to
the senatorial question. Last Friday,
all the Douglas county republican
candidates, with one exception, signed
an agreement to support a Douglas
county man for U. S. senator, instead
of supporting Norris Brown, the re
publican state convention's expressed
choice. Such action on the part of
Douglas county republicans, while not
surprising, is little short of traitrous.
and will have a tendancy to line up
even lukewarm supporters of Xorris
Brown into most earnest workers for
his election. Shame on the Douglas
county nominees who thus stultify
themselves. They deserve defeat.
Hon. R. M. Thompson, of Ravenna,
Republican candidate for state senator
from this district, was in Loup City
last Friday, and found all loyal re
publicans in line for the entire state
ticket, and the political air clear and
calm as the breath of morning. The
report that Mr. Thompson was a rail
road attorney, that he was a son-in
law of Bignell of the B. & M.. and a
few other foolish and nonsensical
falsehoods, were permanently put to
sleep by Mr. Thompson, so far as
right-minded people are concerned.
Mr. Thompson is a bright and rising
young attorney of Ravenna, and will
be remembered by our people as being
one of the instructors at our county
teachers* institute two years ago.
when he created a very favorable im
pression with our people, as a man of
intellectual attainments. That Mr
Thompson will be elected for state
senator by a handsome majority, and
that Sherman county will do her
share nobly to attain that end, re
publicans here have no doubt.
The editor and family visited over
last Sunday at the home of Mr. Alex.
Baillie in Washington township, and
were royally entertained by this wor
thy Scotch couple. Mr. Baillie is one
of’the largest landholders and stock
men in Sherman county, owning some
nine hundred acres of land with two
to three miles of frontage on Middle
Loup river, only six miles from this
city, well stocked with the t>est of
cattle, hogs and horses, big apple or
chards, ample up-to-date machinery,
barns, granaries, a good comfortable
home to live in. ana. best of all, not
a dollar of incumbrance thereon. It
was less than a quarter of' a century
ago when an energetic young Scotch
man. with all the push, grit and Al
mighty go-aheadative character of
his sturdy ancestry, came to Nebras
ka, his sole financial possessions be
ing a lone dollarand a companion coin
of half that intrinsic value, and his
being “on easy street” today is a re
sult of his own unceasing work-and
inbred economy. What a profitable
lesson to the young man of today
does the success of Mr. Baiilie afford.
