Republican County Convention.
The Sherman County Republican !
Convention met last Friday morning !
at 11 o'clock and was called to order
by W. R. .Mellor. chairman of the,
county central committee, who read
the call of the convention. On
motion, John Mathewson was made
temporary chairman and C. T. Mc
Kinnie and Ed Achenbach secretaries.
On motion, the chair appointed the
following committees: On resolu

no contested delegations, the creden
tials as given in by the chairman of
each delegation were accepted as
representing delegations entitled to
seats in said convention, and are as

The convention then adjourned till
1:30 p. in.
The convention was called to order
at the appointed time and upon re
port of committee on permanent or
gani/.atiion, the temporary officers
were made permanent.
The committee on resolutions pre
sented the following, which were re
ceived with rousing enthusiasm ipid
unanimously adopted;

bra-ka, in convention assembled, go hereby
adupt the following Platform as 4 declaration
of our principle,
fie solved : That we re-atllrm our unalterable
allegiance to the. principles of the republican
party. Equality before tbe law. favoritism
jo none, individual freedom of conscience
Protection to American industries against the
products of foreign nations. Integrity and
economy in public service.
We challenge the attention of the world, and
point with priue to the great conflict which is
now on between the people and organized
capital. And we boldly array ourselves on the
side of tbe people in the battle now being

h»'f against greed and graft, against the evils
of rebating, favoritism and discriminations iu
th 'state, and tbe inter-state commerce of our
country.
We commend President Roosevelt for tip:

IVe heartily lavor the protection ol the
people of our own state, by proper state legis- I
latinn against like evils within our state, in
non-interstate commerce.
We earnestly urge the adoption of the pro- j
posed constitutional amendment, providing :
for a state Railway Commission to be clothed 1
with full and ample power to do even handed
justice between the people and the great cor
porations. and we therefore urge upon the
]>eople of Sherman county the present necessi
ty for the adoption of the said amendment. |
We cordially invite attention to the candi- I
dacy of a former resident and long time citi
zen of our county, the honorable John Wall of
Arcadia, Nebraska. We know him to be a
man above reproach, and we beg to commeud
him to the people of the state as worthy of their i
confidence and support. We most heartily en
dorse his candidacy for the office of Governor
believing that none but the best men should
be chosen as our party leaders, and none but
the best should be selected as th* chief execu
tive of this great state.

After tlie report upon order of busi
ness and its adoption, tlie convention
proceeded to tlie nomination of candi
dates for county attorney and rep
resentative and delegates to tlie state
senatorial and congressional conven
tions.
Mr. It. J. Nightingale withdrawing
his candidacy for county attorney and
Robert P. Starr being the only aspir
ant before tlie convention for that
office, tlie rules were suspended and
Mr. Starr made tlie unanimous choice
of tlie convention for that office.
On the informal ballot for repre
sentative three names were present
ed, namely, C. T. McKinnie, R. J.
Nightingale and H. Smelser. but as
the two latter gentlemen declined to
be considered, the rules were suspend
ed and Mr. McKinnie was made tlie
unanimous choice of the convention
for representative.
On motion, the convention accorded
Hon. John Wall the privilege of nam
ing the delegation to tlie state con
vention in tlie interests of his candi
dacy for governor, and after a neat
speech, thanking the convention and
stating his attitude before the people

The Guard is a neat little paper. well
edited and is in the center of the Big
Horn Basin. George will make a suc
cess of it, we know.
The convention held by the Sher
man county republicans last Friday
was the most harmonious and withal
the most pleasant within its history.
From the opening to the close, not
one ripple of disagreement or conten
tion marred the pleasure of the oc
casion. This was a severe blow to
some malcontents who claim party
allegiance, as well as to the opposition,
but proclaimed in no uncertain tones
that the republican party as a whole
did not propose to allow disruption
to enter to any degree into party
w orkings. All agree, friends and foes
alike, that the convention was such
an one as portends success this fail.
In another column will be found the
proceedings in detail. The conven
tiou witli utmost enthusiasm allowed
their esteemed former townsman.
Hon. John Wall, to name his own
delegation to tile state convention,
and when lie was called before the
convention to make a few remarks,
lie was greeted with even a more
friendly ovation from his old friends
and neighbors than he had for one
moment imagined would be the case.
On the county attorneyship question,
not one tiling marred the harmony of
the convention, much to the bitter
dissappointment of the opposition.
Hon. R. J. Nightingale graoefully
withdrew from the race, in a few
well chosen words, and there being
no other candidates before the con
vention for that office. Robert P.
Starr was made the unanimous choice
of the delegates, and responded in a
neat little speech of thanks for the
honor conferred. For representative,
C. T. McKinnie of Washington town
ship, H. Smelser of Ashton and R. J.
Nightingale of Loup City each re
ceived a flattering vote on the in
formal ballot, but the two latter
gentlemen declining to allow their
names to be considered, the conven
tion unanimously gave the honor to
Carl T, McKinnie. who also thanked
the delegates for the honor and
promised, if elected, as he will be. to
honor the county in his legislative
work to the utmost of his ability.
All in all, the work of the convention
is one to be proud of.
Death ot Mrs. Geo. Lee.
Mrs. Geo. Lee died at her home in
tliis city last Sunday after a lingering
