Announcements. 1 FOR COUNTY ATTORNEY. 1 hereby announce myself as a candidate for the nfliee f the Republican County Convention to be held June 29th. 1906. Robert P. Starr. We arc credibly informed the dem ocrats of Sheman county will soon an nounce the date of theircoming coun ty convention. And they propose the populist end of the opposition to re publicanism shall give Dame Democ racy her say on who shall be who. It is whispered out loud that our populist friends have settled on Brer. Brown, their editorial mouthpiece, to head their ticket for representative. After sitting down on Ills nomination for tiie treasurship last fall, as they did. they should make some amends. To Our Patronsi We have completed our line to Litch tield and have a direct wire with no subscribers on, but as we have to run in over the exchange owned by The Central Telephone Co., it will he necessary for us to charge our county subscribers a lOct messenger service at Litchtield until such time as we have an exchange of our own. Our county subscribers can get any fanner in Sherman county, that is on a line running into Litchtield by pay ing 10 cents messenger service. Any subreriber not having a county phone will be charged 15 cents toll service between here and Litchfield, and in addition to this any rnessengerservice that is charged at Litchtield. Hans Dietz received a telegram last Saturday afternoon from iris brother, Carl Dietz.wiio lives in Stanton coun ty, about three miles from Leigh, that their aged father was found hanging in a corn crib, dead, at Carl’s just before noon of that day. Sun day’s Bee gives a short account of the case, and aoubt is expressed whether it is a case of suicide or accident. The family know no cause for suicide. He was aged 80 years, and formerly lived in this countv, being a familiar figure on the streets of Loup City. He went to Stanton county with Lis sop Carl about a year ago. Hans Dietz lives a few miles south of town. The Cohaty Attorneyship. Ed. NoKTBlrtBSTEKN: Inasmuch as there have been home misstatements as to what was saW by Mr. Starr to me in his office in regard to the can didacy for county attorney, I have been requested to give the actual facts, which are as folioWV A short time before I made a pubUcennounce ment of my candidacy, I Ailed at Mr. Starr’s office on professional busi ness. Mr. Starr somewhat angrily demanded of me whether I expected to be a candidate for the office of, county attorney. I informed him that such was my expectation. He then said that I had no right to be a can didate, because the nomination had been promised to him by Mr. I>edler and Mr. Mellor. He also said that if he did not receive the nomination, there would be a split in the republi can party in this county, and he named two of his particular friends who would not support me in case I received the nomination, Mr. A. L. Zimmerman and Mr. Oliver Dubry. two gentlemen against whom I had been opposed in a professional way under employment by other persons. I think Mr. Starr must be mistaken as to the attitude of Mr. Mellor and Mr. Pedler. I cannot believe that those gentlemen would assume the role of political bosses and dictate to the convention who their nominee should be. and I can hardly believe that Mr. Starr's bosom friends can be such disloyal republicans as he repre sents them to be. I wish emphatically to state that I will not be the candidate of any fac tion within the party, and if I cannot be the candidate of the whole party, I decline to be a candidate at all. it was an unfortunate thing for the re publican party in this county that there was a split in the party last fall, and I will not be the instrument to perpetuate division in the ranks. If there is to be any hard feeling be tween Mr. Starr's friends and mine, let the convention fix upon some third man, upon whom all the party can harmonize. I confess that I did not regard Mr. Starr's attitude toward my canaiaacy as very becoming on his part. A man who had been a lawyer for only a few years, and wlio had not been diligently practicing his profession during those few years, had hardly the right to challenge one who had been working hard at his profes sion for a quarter of a century. And a man who had lived in the county for only a few years, and who has not even a permanent home in the coun ty could not with a good grace chal lenge one who had made his home here for more than 24 years. Mr. Starr already holds the office of vil lage attorney, and most men are con tent to hold one office. I have never been a candidate for any county office during the 24 years I have resided in this county." Mr. Starr has been a standing candidate for some office every year he lias been in the county, and has actually re ceived a nominarion from the repub lican party for one office. I leave my fellow citizens to judge how modest his claims are. I very much regret tliat Mr. Starr has seen fit to assume an attitude of personal hostility towards my oandi dacy. So far as I am concerned, my competition for the nomination will be conducted in a friendly spirit and in an open and straightforward way. I am not a professional politician, nor versed in the art of pulling the wires. I believe in an open field and no favors. The people of this county have known my record for nearly "a quarter of a century, and it would'be useless for me to make any claims to which I am not entitled. ' If I have not deserved well at the hands of the people, they will have the right to turn me down. Respectfully sub mitted, R. J. Nightingale. ▼alley District. (Received too late for last week.)
