□A SUSPECTED BAD MAH
Held for Bobbing Postelite at
Pleasanton.
Last Friday, about noon. Sheriff
Williams received a phone message to
arrest and hold a suspected robber of
the bank, postoffice and a batcher strop
at Fleasanton the night before. Start
ing south, he came across his man a few
miles below town, who was makfng
tracks for Loup City on foot, arrested
him and brought him to town. Notify
ing the Pleasanton authorities of the
arrest, they phoned the sheriff to let
him go, as they did not have enough
evidence to make a case. The sheriff
then discharged his prisoner, first re
lieving him of a loaded revolver, taking
oat the eatridges and giving back the
gun, and ordering him to leave the
town and county at once or be fined for
carrying concealed weapons. Within
a half from the time the man was
given his liberty, another phone mes
sage was received to hold the fellow as
new evidence had been secured. At
this, Sheriff Williams and Deputy
Draper immediately started eastward,
the direction taken by the suspect,
coming upon him jnst this side of
Schaupps Ordering the man to halt,
he broke for the canons, with the
sheriff and deputy in hot pursuit, and
was soon captured on pain of being
peppered with hot stuff, remarking
when giving up that if he had his gun
loaded there would have been a little
shooting match. Searching him, they
failed to find his gun, which he claimed
to have thrown away in the running,
and which proved true by parties after
ward finding the revolver in the canon.
Arriving tn town, the fellow, who
claimed to hail from Alliance, and who
said his name was Pat O'Brien, and his
parents lived in Greely connty, was
placed in jail to await identification,
which was done the following morning
by four men from Plersanton, who
positively identified him as the one
wanted. The sheriff was then ordered
to hold the suspect, awaiting the
arrival of a postoffice inspector, who
would be here to take charge of him at
the first possible moment. In order to
hold him, he was taken before the
county judge and fined CIO and costs
for carrying oeocealed weapons, which
holds him until this week Saturday,
when be wiU he turned loose, unless
the inspector apt* here in the meantime
and takes change of him. On Tuesday
another hum was up from Pleasanton,
who positively identified the prisoner.
The suspeetds a young man of perhaps
30 years of age, of powerful physique,
uncommunicative, rather surly dis
position, and while at first was inclined
to be obstreperous, has later quieted
down and is quite well behaved. He is
by far above the average man in in
telligence and claims to have been a
soldier in the Philipines during the
Spanish-American war. is a wide
traveler and seems well posted on all
the important events of the day.

It is intimated that Attorney General
Brown will ass for a rehearing of the
Bartley bond case, if there is the least
shadow of a chance to get such re-bear
ing. Just count Norris Brown on the
people's side every time, and pray that
there Bay be some show for the court
te guess again, and the next time to
guess for the people Instead of t.be
bondsmen.
A person would think to read certain
papers and comments, that there were
but three prospective candidates for
governor, and they were all from Val
iev county, viz: Wall. Fries and Mor
tensen. Don’t you think it. There
are others, and they hall from all over
the state, and their name is Legion In
fact, Loup City and Sherman county
may possibly present the successful
man for the office of chief magistrate
of this state and don’t forget that
thought
The deposed U. S. Marshal for Ne
braska, T L- Mathews, saw the presi
dent Monday morning and left with
ihe knowledge that he would not be
reinstated. This was as expected, as
Roosevelt seems never to take action
unless he stands by such action. This
is supposed to be a vict<*rv of Rosewater
over Schneider. Did you think of that,
in connection with the dismissal ? In
fact the fault lies more in the ways of
marshaiship of the past few years, than
with the doings of the deposed marshal,
and the fault primarily lies heavier
on Judge Munger and his court than
on the marshaiship, and the thought
bears fruit that in the deposition of
Mathews it is a gentle hint to Munger
and others, as much as to Mathews
himself. Are we not right?
In tne deposition of Register Petti
john and Receiver Towle from the Val
entine land office, one can almost
smell the scent of the arrant demagog
ery of certain leading politicians of that
upper country. From what we can
learn, nothing was wrong with the
workings of the office in question, and
the fault lies only, possibly, in the fact
that some technical thing was done or
not done that gave a ’’knocker” a
chance to take advantage of the present
upheayel of matters to wing the regis
ter and receiver. Until we know for a
tict of some unknown doings of Jim
Pettijohn and Major Towle beyond that
which has come to light, we shall be
lieve snd continue to believe that
President Roosevelt has bees imposed
upon by the scheming of designing
politicians, of whom we have not a
very sweet memory, to feather their
own nests over the downfall of their
superiors in honesty, republican ism and
general loyalty to good government.
