The candidates have nothing to do with it. The ticket is made up independent of that trouble, and should not be linked in with it in any regard. No republican can afford to sacrifice any man <>n his ticket. We hear of proposed barter and trades, but cannot believe it will be carried to any extent Shame on any such unfairness Of course, there are always some few who will exchange iheir privilege es an American citizen, but will any fair minded vjter do so? With this week the campaign closes, so far as the newspapers are concerned. The Northwestern' has aimed to be fair with all concerned. The editor is only human, and in one or two instan ces we have been called to task by parties who felt we were unjust. Per haps we were. We insist, however, if they were correct, it was an error of judgment rather than of heart. This refers to politics exclusively, and must not. for one moment, be otherwise con strued Reports have been circulated to the effect that Sheriff Williams has been in the past at times unaole by reason ot health to attend to his official duties> This is asolutely untrue. There ha.-, never been a time when he has failed to be on deck for any duty and he has been called out all hours of day and night. "Dad” is as vigorous, hale and hearty ms yon find them, and is ready and fully capable to attend to all the duties of his office. Vote your ticket straight. There is more or less talk of trades goiDg on. This is eminently unfair, and be sure if you do barter and trade yonr votet the thing will be found out later, and will redound to vour discredit. As you treat others, so may you be treated un der like circumstances Stand bv your colors. If you split your party ticket, do so open and above board. Don't be a party to trading your right of fran chise, the choicest gift of a true Anier can citizen. Don’t Up in Washington tov.nship, the oth er evening, where W. R. Mellor went to answer the attacks made upon him self and J. S. Pedler by Geo. H. Gibson, Jacob Friedman asked if Mr. Mellor would lie sworn to tell the truth. Hav ing willingly assented to the insulting proposal, and taken the oath, Mr. Mel lor made the following pertinent re marks: ‘’Now, Mr. Friedman, I have regard for mv oath. I am not an infi del, an atheist or a materialist, and I do not make sport of people who es pouse the Christum religion.” It is needless to say there was no further in terruption. It was a fusion board of university regents that employed Chancellor E. Bengiman Audrews, whom the opposi tion organs now are very busy malign ing because he would not bow to the will of the fusion political leaders It also was an honest fusion board of regents that inaugurated the secret sessions of the board at which large sums of money are voted for expenses of the school without the details of the expenditures being made public- The fusion press is verv strong against the-e secret sessions now, although there still are fusion members on the board. J. 8. Pedler Calls Oibson Down Loup CIty, Oct. 30,1905. i Editor Northwestern: Dear Editor: In answer to the Geo. H. Gibson letter in your last edition will say, that there is about as much truth in that as there is in the affidavit in regard to the Sheldon land, which everybody knows to lie false, not only by the affidavits of E. H. Chambers and dohn \Y. Long, but from the fact if Mellor presented that request its Gpo. says in his affidavit, it is in writ ing. not only in writing, but in Mellor's band writing, why don’t Geo. produce the request As to my being responsible for not re-conveniug the board to make a legal levy, will say everybody knows that to be the clerk’s duty. I handed the letter of the attorney general to Geo. the 2lst day of September, and he read it and had plentv of time to re-convene the board and give the taxpayers relief from the overtaxation caused by his mistake. The facts are that Geo. after having had two terms and seven thous and dollars, wants a third term and three thousand live hundred dollars more, and is so ungrateful as to go all over the countv slandering the party and the people that gave him the two terms He is like the man finding the pocnet-book containing two hundred dollars and returning same to the loser who wanted interest on the money during time it w as lost Respectfully yours. J. S. Pedler. Our Candidates. In speaking1 of tlie various candidates placed in nomination by the republican party and of the c tmpaign itself, Mr J. S. Pedler gives kind words as fol lows: From the first formation of political orginizations it has been a political custom among the different political parties to submit the name of their choice of candidates in convention as sembled, and ask the support of the voters of their political faith. There are two political orginizations in Sher man county, each having a respectable following; each Pave selected their candidates for the various county offices I know nothing against the character of any man on either ticket. The chief stock in trade of the important third termer seems to be graft; and grafters and although I am one of the chief grafters in his long list of grafters, I am not going to indulge in that kind of politics; like most other people I feel better when I say good things and leave the bad things unsaid. John Mathewsou is the regular nomi nee of the republican party for county clerk, and needs no introduction, as you all know him better than I. Shortly after his nomination, parties interested in his defeat got busy circulating the story that John had robbed some widow near his home, which was effectually nipped in the bud by the affidavits of ali parties connected, including the widow herself, and instead of injuring the character and political standing of John Mathewson as was intended it re dounds ta his credit and will be a crowning jewel in the future life and character of John Mathewson. Judge Hunter, candidate for county judge, has served in that capacity sever al years, was a soldier in the civil war, and for a number of years has been holding positions of financial trust in different orginizations. L. A. Williams, commonly called ‘"Dad,” sheriff and candidate for re election, is a friend to, and a friend of every body; was a soldier in the rebellion and was in seven or eight battles dur ing the four years he served. M H. Mead having been principal ot our Loup City schools for the past ten years, and myself being one of the school board during that time, I have been closely associated with him in school matters, and iierhaps can best show the interest be takes in education and educational matters by relating my experience in hiring the professor in 1904. He said he did not want to teach any more, but as we were con templating putting in two more grades in our school, we concluded to h!re him for another year, thinking he would cbange his mind, but he still refused, feeling, as he said, a desire to be out of the close confinement and strenuous duties incumbent on one who should have his entire mental and physical be ing engrossed in the work before him. “Education,” he added, “i» of so much importance in this day and age that the pupils should have every advantage and not be handicapped in the least and if you will present my resignation to the board with this explanation. 1 will be grateful to you.” This is the kind of a man we think would make a good school superintendent. Carst-n Truelsen. republican caodi date for county tr* asurer. is a Nebras ka product and has lived in this coufity thirty-four years, the old settlers have known him from a little boy. When Peter Truelsen died the boys were left with an indebtedness of fourteen thous and dollars to pay, friends advised them them to hold the farm as long as they couiu ana 10 pay no interest, principal or taxes and let the mortgage take the land. Carsten Truelsen wcs made of the right kind of stuff and answered them by saying, “My father was an honorable man, and a believer in every body paying their ju3t obligations; my mother is living, and it would be humiliating to her if the debts were not paid, so l have concluded that if I live, every dollar of debt contracted by my father shall be paid. (Jarsten ruined his health before the debt was all paid but he sold the land and paid the balance, wnen he moved to town that his children might have the advantaee of a high school education, and this is the first time he would allow the use r f hi-> name as a candidate for any office These candidates being regular nomi nees and honorable upright men, they are entitled to support of republicans .Our democratic friends having no oigimzation in this county at present, will have a chance to vote for a go d set of fellows. Yours Respectfully. J S. Pedler. Board Of Supervisors. Loup City. Nebr., Oct. 2s, 1905.— Countv Board met at the request of the County Attorney for the purpose of re adjusting Jthe levies as made at the meeting of July 10th. 1»05, present D. u. Grow, chairman; Henning Claus sen, W. O. Brown, R. M. Hiddleson, Geo Brammer, W H. Chapman and Ferdinand Schroll, supervisors; and J. j S. Pedler, county attorney and G, H. Gibson, clerk, and after cerefully ex amining into the facts, it was found that the greatest amount that could be deducted from the levies would be two mills, therefore it was by motion ordered th it the levy should be left as previous ly made.
