In our report over the Haddix-Butler killing last Sunday we have carefully refrained from giving rumors, and va rious unauthentic reports from either side that might predjudice our readers. It is well that newspapers be extreme ly guarded in this respect previous to a henring in the courts. Editor J. li. Sutherland of the Tekamah Herald is engaged in lam pooning Judge Willie G. Sears, ex speaker of the legislature, for alleged badness, and doing hii artistic job of it. Willie is poor people take exceptions to the honesty of others until he puts back money he took from the state w hich is ! declared unconstitutionally taken. i The last righteous act of Speaker ' Rouse at the rlose of the session, was to turn back into the state treasury the 800 he had received unconstitutionally as salary for presiding over that august body The reports h ve it that he gave the auditor the privilege of taxing the SCO from his last warrant as member, and that splendid executive did not hesitate one moment to deduct 'he amount. Mrs. Jurgen Jens, a former resident of Sherman countv. died ut her home in Grand Junction. Colo , Tuesday, April 4th, 1905, of dropsy, aged 00 years. 2 months and is da's Eva Oetzmann was born in Prinsenmor, Germany, Jan. 17th. 1839, and was married to Jurgen j Jens July 17th. 1859. To this union w.re born eight children, four of whom survive her. She also Daves a husband and one brother to mourn her loss. She with her husband and child ren, immigrated to this country, in April, 1884, and lived here till March 190,5, when she moved to Grand Junction. Colo. Public Sale. A BLOODY TRAG.DY Melvin Butler, a Sherman Coun ty Farmer, Killed by Scott Haddix, a Neighbor, Just Over the Line in Custer. A tragedy was enacted just over the line in duster countv earlv last Sunday evening, about six miles north of Litch-! iield, when Sc tt liaddix. shot and killed a neigh l>or. Melvin Butler, a neighboiing farmer living in Elm town ship. just inside the Sherman county line. The circumstances th*t led to the tragedy and developed at the inquest over the body of Butler, as given at the inquest by Butler’s daughter, aged 14 vears, and the hired man, Fuller, aged 19 years, and reported to us by one who was present and heard the testimony, was as follows: A little daughter of Mr. Batler had Iteen visiting at the home of a neighbor named Joe dill, living west ot Iladdix's place, and on the evening in question Butler sent two ot her of his children after her. When the children arrived at the liaddix farm, over which the road led, liaddix refused to ht them pass and they returned home. At this Butler and Ins hired m in, named Ful ler, e ich bestrode a luirse and sallied forth over the di.-putid way to dill’s after the child. When tliev reached the Baddix farm the latter refused the right or wav, claiming it no public road, to which Butler claimed the opposite, but ending in Butler and bis man passing through liaddix going into his house, seeming a gun and sending a shot after the two men. On their return later, with liutler on foot and lhe child and hired ru m on hois* hack* they sought to again cross the liaddix farm, when just as Buler began opening the en traee to the tarni II d six appeared and ordeied him to desist. A heated dis cu-sion ensued, followed b\ a shot from Haddix which did 10 harm. Butl*r lien drew a rev olver and fired at Had dix without result, snapped ids recover t a ice again without it going off and then -gain the fourth time, this time, sending a bullet at liaddix a second time without harm. Following this. Haddix again tired his shotgun the shot striking Butler in the left side and \ breast, causing almost instant death. We take another version of the affair from a Broken iiowspecial to the Lin- j coin and Omaha dailies, a-» follows: Broken Bow. Nebr., April 17.— i Scott Haddix. a well known farmer living eight miles north of Mason, shot i and killed Melvin Buth r, another farm J er, on the former’s property early last evening. The trouble, which has been j breeding for some time, was over a roadway running through Haddick'sj property. Both parties met Sunday! night on the disputed ground and Had dix ordered Butler oft. Butler replied; that it was a regularly laid out ro id } and he had a right there, Butler firing} tir.-t; so Haddix alleges, the latter re j turned the fire from behind a post, where he jumped, killing his antagonist Haddix came here on the midnight train and stayed at the Globe hotel all night. While eating breakfast this morning he was arrested by Sheriff Richardson and taken into custody.! Arrangements for a preliminary hear ing will be made as quickly as possible. Judge Sullivan will appear for the de fendant. Haddix has alwavs borne a good reputation. We understand Judge Wall Ins also been rerained for the defense. Auction Sale.
