Narrow Escape From Death.
Julius Polenz was terribly injured
and bad an almost miraculous escape
from .instant death, Wednesday after
noon.' He was working at the bottom
of a 70 ft well, and had just filled an
iron bucket with wet sand and clay
He had given the signal to hoist and
the bucket bad been raided to a height
of about forty feet when the rope broke.
The heavy iron bucket loaded with
perhaps one hundred pounds of earth
plunged downward. Luckily Mr.
Polenz was stooped over with his bead
to one side of the well, which probably
saved him from instant death As it
whs the bucket struck him a glancing
blow on the shoulder and the full force
of the falling bucket struck him mid
way between the hip and knee of bis
left leg, breaking both tones like pipe
stems, the shattered ends of the bones
being forced through the fiesh and
protuding as much as three inches. The
injury is a very bad one but the wonder
is that Mr. Polenz was not killed
instantly. The serious nature of bis
injuries will lay him up probably for
months, but there is but little doubt
that he will eventually recover.—The

that true? Let the farmer members
stand out and make their fight in the
open and win or lose on merit rather
than by secret force and compact.
The lecture at the opera house Mon
day night by Prof. John G. Scorer, on
“The Philosophy of Humor,” was by
far the best and most instructive enter
tainment of the present lecture course
Prof Scorer went back into the history
of humor, and gave us an intelligent
appreciation of the subject matter and
food for thought which will be of much
value to those of his audience who seek
for higher ideals and a keener apprecia
tion of the enjoyable in thia old world
His lecture was replete with humor,
wit, pathos, and thorough knowledge of
our better natures, and what he teach
es is but the reflex of the sunshine and
happy disposition shown tn his counte
nance. We had the oleasure of meet
ing the gentleman personlly the morn
ing following the lecture, and when we
learned that he was a practical newspa
per man and had for years been en
gaged in that work of grace, the m> s
tery of his disposition became as clear
to us as mud. We are glad to have
heard him lecture, pleased to have met
[ him and trust he may return at not di>
tant period.

decree of foreclosure rendered in said court
on the 20th day of December, 1904, wherein
Ida D. Bock was plaintiff, and J. W. Pickett,
first real name unknown; Susan M. Pickett.
Albert Henley, Mrs. Henley, wife of Albert
Healey, John G. Halter, Eugenie Hale, John
son T. Hale, Horatio Smelser. and the West
Half of the Northwest Quarter of Section
Three in Township Sixteen, Range Fifteen, in
Sherman county, Nebraska, were defendants.
I have levied upon the following described
real estate, to-wit: The West Half of the
Northwest Quarter of Section Three in Town
ship Sixteen north of Range Fifteen, west ol
the 6th principal meridian, situated in said
Sherman connty and State of Nebraska, and I
will, on the 28th day of March, 1905. at one
o'clock p. m., of said day. at the south door of
the courthouse, in Loup City, Sherman coun
ty, Nebraska, offer for sale and sell said above
described real estate at public auction to the
highest bidder for cash to satisfy the amount
of $85.80 due the plaintifl, Ida D. Bock, with
interest at seven per cent from the 20th day of
December, 1004, and the amount of $43U.OO due
thn intervenor, William C. Newman, and costs
of the above action, taxed at $22.10. and ac
cruing costa, which amount was adjudged to
be due to the plaintiff above named, and to said
intervenor. from the defendants above named,
and to be a lien upon the above described
premises.

Smelser, the above named plaintiff, tiled his
petition in the District Court of Sherman
county, Nebraska, against the above named

Y. Ketchum, to make specific performance of
his certain contract in writing made and en
tered into by the said Leander Y. Ketchum. by
bis attorney, T. S. Nightingale, and the said
Horatio Smelser, the plaintiff herein, on the
19lh day of October. 1904. wherein and whereby
the said Leander Y Ketchum covenanted and
agreed to sell and convey by deed of general
warranty unto the said Horatio Smelser the
following described real estate, to-wit: The
east half of the northwest quarter and the east

skip tifteeD [15> north range fourteen (14) west
of the 6th P. M.. subject to right of way of L.
& B. H. R. R. and prairie dog town, and where
in the said Horatio Smelser covenanted and
agreed to pay for said premises the sum of
$1400.00 in cash, said contract and said sum of
91400.00 to be placed in escrow in the First Na
tional Bank of Loup City until abstract of title
was approved and accepted. The plaintiff has
accepted said abstract, has directed and au
thorized said bank to pay said defendant the
said sum and has done and performed all
things, agreements and covenants, on his part
to be performed, made and done. Plaintiff
prays that Leander Y. Ketchum be required
to receive and accept the sum of 91400.00 so ten
dered by the plaintiff and to execute and de
liver to plaintiff conveyance of said premises,
with covenants of general warranty, and if de
fendant fails so to do. the Honorable Court
may order and decree that the decree entered
herein shall operate with like force and effect,
and for such other relief as justice and equity
may require.

or before April 3rd. 1905.

amount due oa said tax lien, or that said prem
