What has become of the popu
lists? Their total vote in this state
was barely 20,000 for Watson, as
against 51,876 cast for Parker. Oh,
how are the mighty fallen!
West Point, this state, was visit
ed by an earthquake, Dec. 1st, it is
reported. The reason easily as
signed is that ex Deputy Oil Inspec
tor Sonneschein had partially awak
ened from the shock caused by the
election of Mickey and had regis
tered a spasmodic kick. It was a
har<i blow to “Sunshine.”
It is reported Gov. Mickey has
agreed to lay aside his religious pre
judices long enough to lead the
grand procession at the inaugural
ball. If so, he is simply following
a time-honored custom of the gov
ernor’s station, and setting aside his
pesouality for the time. But just
hear the jackal roar of the opposi
tion press over it. Anything to beef
about, is their slogan.

He is now up against another charge
ol pocketing premiums on state
warrants. He doesn't dtny the soft
impeachment, but claims other state
officials were in the habit of doing
the same, and the intimation is that
he will have other officials investi
gated, if he has to cough up. Let
the coughing up process proceed, no
matter whose palate is tickled.
The Shelton Clipper tells of the
robbery of a man’s house near Shel
ton, a short time since, in which
notes and papers to the value of
nearly a thousand dollars were tak
en. They were afterwards recov
ered, but that didn't end it When
the assessor had been around the
man had apparently forgotten to
give them in When the news of
the robbery floated to the ears of
the cruel assessor he made a mental
note of the fact, and when said col
latteral had found its way back to
the owner, the assessor individual
had the man “dig up” that much
more. Who says that robber was
not a public benefactor(!)
Last week we copied an article
on “Cheaper Coal” from the St.
Paul Republican, and taken by that
paper from the Kearney Democrat.
“Them's our sentiments, too,” and
we believe if the press in the regions
of high-priced coal will as a unit ag
itate this question, the sentiment
can be made strong enough to force
the railroads into justice for their
interior of the state patrons, and if
not, then by process of law see it
done through those channels Is
there any justice in Omaha getting
Wyoming coal for a third less than
we, and with a 200-mile further
haul? Here’s a chance for the pop
ulist press to howl to some purpose.
Will they do so, or are they afraid
of losing their mileage books?
Deputy State Auditor Anthes in
preparing trie auditor’s report for
the biennium shows that enough old
tixes are due the state from certain
counties to wipe out the entire state
debt. There are some thirty coun
ties in the bunch, Lancaster leading
with nearly *100,000, Otoe next
with a little over *09,000, Holt
county, poor old pop ridden, Mike
Harrington bossed, following close
with *30,000 and over old and un
collected taxes due the state. It is
expected most of this will be col
lected under the scavenger law.
But that Holt, the home of Reform
er Mike, who will not even allow his
pure eyes to dwell on a bit of paste
board with “pass” printed thereon
should allow his county, or was his
till Nov. 8, to “pass” in this class is
heartrending. P. S. Sherman coun
ty is not in the bunch.
Nearly Fatal Aeeident.
Little Albert, Il-year-old son of
D M. Gue, nearly lost his life, on
Tuesday evening of this week from
the kick of a horse, cutting a gash
in his left temple, aod leaving him
in an almost lifeless condition. The
little fellow was playing about the
yard and got too close to the heels
ot the animal, which without warn
gave him the almost fatal blow. Dif!
Maiu was hastily summoned and
sewed up the ghastly wound, but so
utterly unconscious was the little
sufferer, that the stitchec were tak
en without causing a wince of pain
and without chloroform. At this
writing, Thursday, he is seemingly
getting along well. Messages were
dispatched to Mrs. Geo. R. Reed of
York, sister of Mr. Gue, and to Mrs.
Frank May of Central City, mother
of Mrs. Gue, which brought both of
those ladies last evening, to assist
the distracted parents in caring for
their darling boy.
More Cattle Stealing.
Last week we published an arti
tiele taken from the Arcadia Cham
pion on extensive cattle rustling
at or near Ansley. Now comes fur
ther news of cattle rustling from
the same point. George Porter, a
resident of Ansley, owning a ranch
some five miles from Litchfield last
week discovered be had lost twenty
five head of cattle, which had been
taken by unknown parties. He
traced the cattle to Litchfield where
he found they had been shipped to
South Omaha under the fictitious
name of Johnny Powers, on Tues
day morning, Nov. 7. Mr. Porter
has traced the thieves, and suspicion
points to the same gang now under
arrest charged with the first named
cattle steabng.
The St. Louis exposition closed
at midnight on Nov. 30. Next
comes the Portland, Oregon, expo.
It seems the U. P. has joined the
Burlington in an effort to evade
a portion of the taxes assessed them
under the new revenue law. The
Northwestern and the Milwaukee,
on the contrary, have paid their
taxes as assessed. That the two
roads are trying to escape a portion
of their taxation there is no doubt,
but that they will succeed we do
not for one moment believe. Why
will the opposition press try to cre
ate a false impression by publishing
such misleading items as the follow
ing taken from the St. Paul Press:
‘The railroads only paid two-thirds
of wrhat was charged to them.” It
is not fair, it is not honest, it is mis
leading, it is sheer political bun
combe, to publish such a statement
as lies within the enclosed quotation.
A paper should deal fairly with its
readers.
