Those present: Mes dames Joha- sen, Reed, Swanson, Jan ulewicz, French, Simpson, l)epew, Mc Nulty, Fisher, Gibson, Ohlsen, Ditto, Pedler, Kaminski and Burrows. Mr. J. H. Miner of Ravenna took charge of the Round Front bam last week and is now fairly down to business. He starts out right by becoming a reguhr reader of this paper and also asks the public through our colums for their patronage. He has one of the best stables In the west, with elegant turnouts, and will give as good service as can be found anywhere. IDlf left for St. Louis, last Saturday, where they will put in a week visiting the exposirion. The B. & M and the U. P. 'are both offering one and one third round trip rates for Thanksgiving for up to 2<K) miles distance. Mrs. A. O. Hendrickson of Grand Island was visiting Mrs. 11. M. Gasteyer and other friends here last Week, return ing home Saturday. Y., who is here visiting his sons, C. J. and E E. Tracy, gave us a pleasant call Tuesday. He will remain till he gets tired of vis iting. A. W. District No. 10,in the Tracy neighbor hood. had a basket social and fine pro gram at their school house last Friday night. Some SI3.30 was netted for a new school library, Uncle Joe Pedler this week renews his own subscription to this paper, and also the subscriptions ofj his brothers, Samuel and John, at Eugenia and Flesherton, Ontario. C. J. Tracy goes to Lincoln, Monday, where lie will be w itness in the Young murder case that occurred on the State Fair grounds last fall, while he was chief of police of the Fair association. W. M. Engle is working on the new brick block. He is snugly housed for the winter in the Taylor house, in the northeast part of town. Mr. Engle is a new’ cash reader of this ever good. W. H. Gunn of Esmond, Ills , Inis our thanks for a renewal of his paper. Mr. Gunn was here during election and re corded his vote in Clay for Rooseveit and prosperity, and was jubilant over the result. Dr. Long at tended the injured member, but Ike will necessarily rein tin on the invalid list some time. The National Stock company, which opened at the opera house last night, is a warm member. Mr. Gibson and wife tvent up Saturday evening, re turning Monday morning. It. It. Beers, a member of Loup City lodge, also at tended. Mr. Gibson reports the larg est Odd Fellows funeral he ever at tended. Becker Bros., of Grand Island, the big music Arm of Central Nebraska, have opened anew music house in Loup City* It is only necessary to make this an nouncement to assure our people that we have one of the best music concerns in the state located in this city. The B. & M. railroad tax man arrived in Loup City last Thursday, and ten dered Treasurer Sweetland $9,299.12, in pavment of $12,683.95 taxes as charged up against that company for 1904, but Mr. Sweetland, with good judgment, refused to accept. The com pany appears to conclude that the in crease in their values is not to their liking, so they take the plan of tin* val ues as certi lied by the state board f«>r 1903, add 20 per cent to ir, then com pute their taxes from that value, using the. different levies for 1904 as then ba-is of taxation. What will be the outcome is yet to be feen, but in our ! judgment they will pay the full amount in the end. We neglected numerous items of interest last w ek. but then it was elec tion week, and nothing better could be expected, under the circumstances. Among the Lems neglected was the coming of liev. Wold, the new Baptist minister and family; the lecture of Secretary Bailey, of the young Men’s Christian Association at the Baptist church; the marriage of 1). II. Harbaugh of Buffalo county to Miss Edith Collins of this county, on the 7th inst.. and in tact items too numerous to mention. Forgive us this time and don’t mention it; we feel had enough over it. Dr. Kearns orders the North wesern to visit his brother, II. W. Kearns at Vinton, Iomh, and his sister, Mrs, Etta Morford at Mason City.Neb. The good doctor ami the editor have a mutual kindly fe ling for each oth*r, having the same birth place back in the fifties in t* e best town in Iowa, Vinton. Prof. Ilufman remembers us finan cially this week. The professor is hav ing his hand and heart full the^e days, with his school duties and Mrs. Hut man quite hi. However the good w ife is convalescing nicely, and the professor is correspondingly happy. Mrs Stella Henry, who lias been teaching in Montana, arrived last Sat urday on a visit to tier parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Knapp of Logan township, She w ill go east to perftet herself in li* r studies, after a fortnight's visit Balsora Items. Several interesting news items of last week were not reported, because your correspondent had no way of send ing them to town till it was tuo late for publication. The first in importance was the dedi catory services of the beautiful new Swedish Ilapii-h church, Rev. Carlson and Rev. Ilolleen were present and as sisted the pastor, Rev. Sandh, in the services, which were largely attended by both Swedes and Aniercans, ser mons being preached in both languages People took their dinners and a boun teous repast was served in the church parlor. Sunday evening three asked for the prayers of Cod's people. Mon day night Rev. Carlson delivered an impressive sermon in Swede and Tues day and Wednesday evenings, Rev. Ilolleen preached in Swede and in Eng lish. The Misses Sadie and Rhoda Whit man have boen visiting at home since last week, but we bavn’t learned liow long they expect to stay. Mr. Alfred and Miss Edith Malm visited friends in Dry Valley last week. Miss Gilbert visited with Mrs John Fagen and family Saturday and Sun day and reports a most enjoyable time.
