still rushing the clouds. It is now
80,000 ahead and still going up.

cussing the abandonment of their I

The democrats have thus quickly
launched a presidential boom for
Folk for 1908. Good-bye, Bryan.
The new revenue law wasn’t such
an awful weight fer the Republicans
to carry, was it?
Let’s see. Ben Hill was to go
out of politics this coming January.
The people antedated that retire
ment a couple of months.
^ It cost Jim Dahlman 11,000 to
Vbink Mickey wouldn’t be elected

coming power in Nebraska politics
Of course, he’s an old Iowa boy.
Had the election been a few days
later, doubtless'the few remaining
democrats and populists would have
made it unanim ms for Roosevelt.
The socialists ca9t 600,000 votes
as against 90,000 four years ago. Is
it to be the successor of the grange,
ami-monopoly, farmers' alliance,
greenback, populistist and other
mushroom parties?
^ The only blot on the returns from
Sherman county was the 23 major
ity against Mickey Everything
else went Republican. But then
that’s not so bad, when we remem
ber that Mickey had 240 against
- him in this county two years ago—
l a gam of 217. Hallelujah!
Let's see. Was anybody running
against Judge Wall.
Bob Ingersoll said he would be
lieve in bell when Missouri went Re
publican
Tom Taagert of Indiana can now
be classed with Jones of Arkansas
as a political prophet.
Oh, yesl Bryan brought all his
friends into line in Indiana! Have
you heard the Hoosier vote?
Roosevelt's popular plurality is
now about two million, with the
back precincts yet to hear from.
Does anyone know just exactly
how Bryan feels over election? Oh!
that inward chuckle of satisfaction.
Representative Smelser is the
first man elected to the Nebraska
lower house since 1888—sixteen
years.
Senator Wall had practically no
opposition. He carried both Sher
man and Ruffalo counties with some
600 majority.
Sherman county Republicans send
greeting to the Republicans of How
ard county. Both are now in the
Republican fold.
There will be no fusionists, dem
ocrats nor populists in the next state
senate and but ten of ’em in the
house. Pshaw! but the Republi
can's won’t have any fun at all.
Tr ere are more prospective can
didates for speaker of the lower
house than usual. Representative
Perry, who was the youngest mem
ber of the last house, and who was
kind o skeered lest some big, bsd
lobbyist would kidnap him, wants
the speakership awTul. Jim Doug
las, who turned a neat trick, making
himself the head of the special rev
enue committee two years ago, is in
the race and in size, voice, brains,
commanding presence, parliarnenta
: ry tactics, and all the etceteras, the
best man spoken of for the place,
Frank Juyenat is another good fit
for the speaker’s chair. General
Rouse, who commanded the farmer
forces the last several terms in the
house, and made himself a terror to
I the advocates of measares he op
; posed, is a warm member and would
be no m sfit, like ex-Speaker Sear?,
for instance. Delos Denier, guess
that’s near enough his name, has
been re-elected and is in it for the
distinquished honor, name and all.
And there are others, and still oth
ers’ and then some.
We used to run a Republican pa
j per at Holden, Mo., in Senator Cock
erel's own county of Johnson, and
we knew the royal old democratic
statesman personally. This was in
1885-6, during the balmiest days of
Vest and Cockerel supremacy. The
; county of Johnson was divided into
! two renresentative districts—the
I eastern safely Republican, the west
ern hopelessly democratic. The
| latter idolized Cockerel; there wj s
no organized Republican opposition.
A few of us got together; we nom
inated a candidate for representa
tive—and elected o: r man, but only
wi ll the understanding that should
the election of Cockerel depend on
one vote between himself and some
other democrat, our man should by
his vote save the day to the old
man. However, he didn’t need the
vote, and Major William Warner
of Kansas City received the support
of our representative from start to
finish as Cockerel was an easy win
ner We speak of this only to show
the hold Cockerel had on the affec
tions of the people of that state, Re
publicns no exception. But now,
in the whirlwind of Republican suc
cess the grand old democratic w'ar
rior is retired from active service
in the United States senate as one
of its oldest members. Such is the
penalty of politics.
