W. BURLEIGH. Ell. and Pub. The county populist convention has been called for August 8th. Sherman was one of the first live counties in the state to complete re turns of assessment to the state board this year. This district’s senatorial convention met at Kearney yesterday. We have not learned the result, but of course Judge Wall received the nomination, as both counties instructed for him. Will Maupic one of the mainstays of Bryan's Commooer is l*ing boomed for a state office (anything will do) by some of his democratic compatriots. Which reminds us that it was just ten years ago that the republican country press was shouting it’s head off for “Maup" for secretary of state. lie was running a republican paper at North Bend then, but shortly after his defeat in conven tion he changed his p ditics and has been a malcontent ever since.—St. Paul Republican. Senator Fairbanks was born in Ohio, in Union county. Ilis nomi nation preserves the longestablisned rule, as reeog-iized among the re publicans, of having one Ohio niau on their national ticket. Since the close of the civil war this rule has been deviated from on two occa sions only—in 1884, when neither of the candidates was a na'ive of Ohio, and in 1892, when both candi dates were natives of Ohio. On the republican national ticket in 1868, 1872, 1876, 1880, 1888, 1892, 1896, and 1900, thecandidite was a native of Ohio. v Last week's Kearney Hub con tained nearly tbtee pages of adver tised lands and town lots in Buf falo county on which were deHn queot taxes, the same being pub lished according to the provisions of the new revenue law. A visit to our county treasurer shows that there is very little of such laud or town lots in Sherman county, per. haps not over a dozen all told, which might come under the scavenger act, not enough to pay the county for any action, delinquent taxes being and having been paid in a remarka bly satisfactory manner. That is another good reason for standing up for Sherman county. After nearly a week of hard labor the democratic party at St. Louis last Friday Dight brought forth a platform and national ticket. The platform is a queer conglomeration of platitudes, complaints, wbinings, fault findings, scoldings and reform promises, that reminds oue of the explanation given by a teacher once regarding an address before a coun j ty normal by a hair brained profes ; sor, as being “a long way from be j ginning to end with nothing be j tween.” The candidates selected | were Alton 13. Parker of New York | for Roosevelt to easily defeat, and | an octogenarian named Davis of ; West Virginia, for second place, an | extremely wealthy old man, who is | ov, ner of several banks, president of I a railroad or two, and undoubtedly selected, as was English of Indiana i for Clevand’s second term, because ! j j j of the “bar’l” he could command, j The platform is silent on the money I question, as a “catch-all” for votes,! and leaves Silver Bryan and Gold Hill sobbing and hysterical in each | others arms. Just imagine! Poli tics make strange bedfellows. Loup City will hold a raeng carnival and street fair. Aug. 4, 5 and 6. This was decided last Friday night at a me< t ing in Judge Wall's office, every busi ness man being present and in full sympathy with the movement. Judge Wall, H. M. Mathew andM. C. Mu lick will have charge of the event with power to mcke all arrangements. We hope to give full details next week. Anton Topolski will have about 1500 ! bushels of potatoes tor the market this fall. John Kwiatkowski, the road boss, says it will take muc^ uard work to get I the roads in shape again. John Stansiek marketed four ho^s that weighed 15(50 pounds. John seems to know how to raise 'em. A nephew of A. Johnson is visiting him from Laramie. Wyo., where he is working in the U. P. shops. E. Ely went to Omah i today to buy a stock of dry goods for his new store. He will also put in a lumber yard. L. Bechthoid loaded a car of corn for the market. It is a fine white corn of which you do not see much the past year. E G. Taylor had two Get of water in his elevator as a result of the recent rains, giving Louis a nice job of bailing it out. On account of recent rains, Schaupp Siding is very dull, the roads lieing washed out, as is also the Oak Creek bridge. Lew Bechthoid and family attended the wedding anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. FJichneideret, Sunday, aud a good time was reported.
