The late state populist convention which met at Fremont had repre sentation from only forty-five out of the ninety counties. Why? The Arcadia Champion prophesies fusion of democrats and populists in Nebraska again this year Aad that will mean con-fusion to them, of course. The national brohibitionists have selected a man named Swallow, from Pennsylvania, as their candidate for president. That name is more sug gestive of irrigation than drouth. The Times-Independent says the populist comity convention will be held*tbe last of July or the first of August. This information is given because of many inquiries in regard thereto. =— - Henry Lehr, who was elected j chairman of the Republican state central committee, has resigned and Representative Burgess of Lancas-; ter has been cliosen in his stead. Burgess is an active, energetic I young man and will undoubtedly prove a good man for the place. Mrs. Lillie the David City woman convicted of murdering her husband gets no sympathy from the supreme court, which upholds the decision of the lower court. She is now work ing for a rehearing and will take her cast* to the IT. S. supreme court, if possible. It is such dilatory tactics in legal jurisprudence that creates mob rule. And now it is our own Windy V. Allen who is getting lead strings on the straight-out populist nomina tion for president, if that should pan out, just watch Windy swallow Swallow on the stump. As a swal lower on all occasions he has few equals and no superiors. Later— Thos P. Watson of Geo’gia receive ! the nomination, with T. H. Tibbies the Lincoln editor fur second place. If we were to express an opinion j on the advisability of moving the Republican state central committee headquarters from Lincoln to Oma ha it would be adversely to the prop osition. The only thing that would be advisable in the premises, is to take it away from the Lindell fakery and place it somewhere else in the capital city. Everybody is onto the Lindell hotel. It should be moved from there anyway. Of course, it’s none of our busi ness, but our populist friends would show a just appreciation of a man who has done more tban any other one power to build up that faith in Sherman county by giving Bro Ed Brown their nomination for rep resentative. Now, we’re not saying this as a republican nor as a rival contemporary, but out of the full ness of the heart the mouth speak eth. We would like to see one hard working editor who was considered more to his party than a mere hew er of wood and drawer of water. Tom Denison, the noted Omaha gambler, wanted over in Iowa for alleged complicity in the great Pol-i lock diamond robbery of a number of years ago, and who has been fight ing in the courts against his extra dition, is in a pretty sure way of having to go. The lower court has decided Gov. Mickey was right in granting the requisition, and now Denison will take the matter up to the court of last resort. When the matter of Denison being wanted in Iowa first came up, the big Omaha boss put up a huge bluff that fore was unnecessary; that he would be on hand, but when it came to a show down the big gambling bpss tries by all subterfuges and legal techhio alities to keep from answering the Iow a summons. Too bad that the law and courts can be used in such way. Mo wonder there is a grow ing contempt for law and tbe courts. Death of Mrs. Maggie Hancock Mrs. Maggie Hancock, relict of the late Uncle Samuel Hancock, died July 1st at the residence of her parents, near Hampton, this state, her death being due to dropsy. Mrs. Hancock was well known in and around Loup City. She wrs especially highly esteemed for her untiriog efforts in caring for her in valid husband for years before his death. Her duties were made doubly hard in having the care of her daughter Mary, who was also an invalid. Mrs. Hancock was a memberot Shiloh Circle No. 5, ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic, where she will be greatly misled. A letter to Mrs. Jessie Fisher from Mrs. Hancock's daughter gives particulars of her death. The funeral occurried the 2nd instant from the home of her father. A Big Game on Tap. Say, boys ! On Tuesday the 10th of this month, the Creameries, of Lincoln, one of the very best base ball clubs in the state, are slated to play our boys on the home diamond. This will be one of the hottest contests of the season. Our boys are just getting on their base ball clothes in the very best way, and are taking almost everything in sight, and when the Creameries come will give fliein a tustle for their whis kers. Don't forget the day and da*e, and let every man, woman and child in Loup City and surrounding country be present and see our boys do up the state officials. Bet you they named Parker at St. Louis yesterday. Heh? The St. Paul papers are kept so busy with each other’s affairs they have little time to devote to aught else. They should qevote more space to their readers’ interests. Get into a back alley, you fiends, and fight it out. The opposition to Republicanism persistently looks backward in look ing forward, as their history proves. They are now gazing back at Silas Holcomb’s gubernatorial regime to prove he is proper executive timber again. We are of the opinion they feel 'ack of suitable material in their ranks or are prone very much to hero worship. However, we doubt Uncle Silas's willingness to be sacri ficed on the altar of defeat. Girls are not without resources. A Minnesota girl aged 18 wanted to marry her lover a boy of 20 but the boy was aq orphan and had no guardian to give consent to his mar riage and as he was a minor he was up a stump. But the girl was of age according to the law’ of Minnesota, and so she adopted the boy as her. son and issued to him a permit to take out a marriage license in due form. Then they were married with out the interference ot anybod y This is the first time a lady has been has been put on record as marrying her adopted son.—Ex.
