REPUBLICANS MEET IN COUNTY CONTENTION The Sherman county Republican convention met on Tuesday, April 27, 1904, pursuant to call, nearly every township being represented by full delegations of loyal and enthu siastic workers, with quite a goodly number of interested spectators present. Chairman Smelser called the con vention to order at about 11:30 a. m. and a temporary organization was effected, with T. C. Chamber lain as chaiimau and II. S. Conger as secretary. The committee on resolutions pre sented the following, which was en thusiastically received and unani mously placed on record as the voice of Sherman county Republicanism: Resolved, That we, the Republicans of Sherman county, in convention as sembled, do re-affirm our allegiance t<> the Republican party, unreservedly, un der the administration of President Roosevelt, and so pledge ourselves to use all honorable effort to secure ins nomination and election. We further endorse and commend the work of our member in congress, the Hon. M. P. Jvinkaid, particularly- for his work m securing the passage of tbe bill known as the homestead bill. We further endorse the administra tion of our governor. John H Mickey, who has been tried in that important of fice and found to be a faithful and effi cient executive officer. We also endorse each and every act of our retiring chairman, the Hpn. H Sine sar, who has so honorably and faithfully discharged tiie duties incum bent upon him ap to command the ad miration and respect of all parties and all persons. We extend to Mr. Smelser our thanks and gratitude for his ser vices. We heartily approve the action of the State Central Committee in recommend ing that the State Convention nominate a candidate for the U. S. senate. We further pledge onrselves to sup port the candidates of our National, state and county conventions, knowing the success of our party means the safety and prosperity of our nation. On motion the delegates to the senatorial convention were selected from the southern townships of Sher, m°n county, more easily accessible tq i the probable place for holding said ] convention, and were as follows: E. j Munn, P. G. Paige, Bert Edwards, | John Mathewson, T. 0. Chamber lain and T. Pleasance. Three alter I nates were also chosen, being, J. A. | Stev'eus, G.Van and D. Orrusby. The delegation was instructed to use all honorable efforts to secure the re ' nomination of Judge Aaron Wall for j ° i state senator from this 16th district, i j | Judge Wall's name being received I with great enthusiasm from the con vention The following delegation to the j Republican state convention was se lected, but uninstructed: Aaron Wall, W. R Mellor, H. Smelser, T. Ojendyk, R. P. Starr and T. C Chamberlain. Following came nominations for Representative, the following gen tlemen being placed before the con vention: H. Smelser, E. G. Paige and L. N. Smith, resulting in Mr. Smelser’s nomination, and the gen tleman being called before the con- i vention replied in a few earnest and well chosen words making a most fa-1 vorable imbressiou upon his hearers. The office of county attorney de veloped, on informal ballot, two candidates, J. S Pedler, the present incumbent, and R. P. Starr How- j ever, before a formal ballot could I be called for, the latter gentleman got the floor and in a irraeefui and befitting manner, withdrew his can didacy and Mr. Pedler's nomination was made by acclamation. Mr. Starr made a host of new admirers and clinched his old ones by his gra cious act in the interest of harmony, and was rouudiy applauded. He also enlivened the regular proceed < ings by a few minutes' witty- speech | which proved he has oratorical abil | ity surprising to even his close friends. On motion. W. R. Mellor was 1 elected chairman of the county ceu-« tral com mi tee. The county central commitee was instructed to fill any vacancy that mav occur. The convention then adjourned. Lack of time and space precludes further or more extended mention; of the proceedings this week, or edi torial comment on the convention’s work. We think it was a duty well done and the ticket a winner and one of the best that could he selected. --i To-day will probably see the con-; elusion of the present session of con gress. Last Saturday morning. President Roosevelt signed the bill opening for sale 416,000 acres of land in the Rosebud Agency in South Dakota. A bill to provide for holding ses sions of the federal court at Grand Island, which passed the house, rt cently, has been vetoed by the de? partraent of justice as unnecessary. ! Up to the hour of goiDg to press, Judge Sedgwick still stands out against the appointment of Hairy Lindsay as reporter of the supreme court. Judge Sedgwick evidently holds the press of the state in con tempt, and iu the language of Van derbiitsays, in substance,“The press be D—d.” J udge Parker of New Y ork seems to be getting the edge on the demo cratic nomination for president, despite the frantic efforts of the Bryanites to knock him out of the box. Matters must have reached a desperate crises indeed when Bryan goes to Chicago and hires a hall to make a speech against Parker and his lieutenants Congressman Kinkaid’s bill giving homestead rights in the sand hills to 040 acres of land passed the senate last Thursday, and later was signed by the president. This is a big victory for homesteaders in a great part of the Big Sixth, and will undoubtedly prove just the thing to take up all the vacant sand hills country, over which there has been somuchdispute of late between cattlemen and the goverment. The Republican primary of Elm township last Friday evening selected as tlieir candidates for township offi cers, O. A, Clark for clerk. II. Burtner for treasurer and a Mr. Estabrook for justice of the peace. As delegates to the supervisor convention, they chose A. Zahn, H. Burtner and Mr Weller. The delegates to the county convention will be found in the regular convention proceedings. . Never before have we shown such a complete line of Mil linery.
