The Republican electors of Loup City township will take notice that a Repub lican primary election will be held at the usual voting place in said to*o-hip 1 on Saturday, the 23d th, we Mghted the I.sle of Guam and dropped anchor about noon. Then we rigged ship for and commenced coaling, finishing the next morning, (iuam is only a signal and cable station from which we received all the news from the states and we certainly *1 id enjoy it. On Jan. 13 we left Guam for Ma nilla and had a very fine trip. On the morning of Jan. IT, we entered tlie straits ami was steaming in them all day and night and the next day. the 18th, we lighted Manilla and dropped our “mud hook” about noon. P. Manilla is a very nice place. Ev erything is the same as in the states except the prices and they are about twice as much as they are in “God’s Country ” We coaled ship the next day and on Jan. 21 we left for Olongapo, P. I., about 65 miles from Manilla. We steamed there in about four hours. On the same morning the cruiser squadron came in and anchored in position. While entering Subic ba> we viewed some very pretty scenery aod dropped aneh r in close to the beach. I will now endeavor to give you a description of Subic bay aid Olohgapo, as the navy department is thinking of establishing a navy yard there. Olongapo is situated on a peninsula, in fact it is surround ed by water, as a lagoon extends around it and meets off Subic (a city) again toward the north and west, yet at low tide the upper por tion of the lagoon is dry. Behind and protected by the peninsula is a small hay of sufficient depth to har bor any of the vessels of the “Mos quito fleet,” and it would require j but little dredging to make an en trance to dry docks which could be used by the largest vessels afloat. The natural geogr pineal location I «.f the place protects it from ty phoons, which have often wrought i such des ruction in Manilla bay and j about Cavite. Fortifications could be constructed on Grande Island, which would m ike it impossible for a hostile fleet to enter, and the hills protect it most effectually from bombardment at a distance. Altho* the district is mountainous, a branch line could be buil- to connect with the Dagupau railroad and allow the place two pilin', of access, although material from the United States could he dischargul from the ves sels at Olongap > and a railroad would be only a convenience and by no means a necessity. Great quan tities of the most excellent stone for building purposes are close at hand | and its peculiar adaptability to sub marine work lias been proven by work of the Spanish. In Qlongapo is an excplleiif location for drill and parade grounds and small arm target range, while the bay affords a most excellent rendezvous for the fleet. On the morning of Jan. 28, we sailed with the Kentucky for Ma anohojed at the tar Never beiore have we shown such a complete line of Mil linery.
