Jens Wilheltnsen of St. Paul, was in the city Tuesday calling on the differ ent merchants. G. I., Sliumway of Scotts RlutTs, Neb., has been transacting business in this city several days the past week. Street Commissioner, Wesley l’edler, J was cleaning up the streets and culverts I Tuesday and burning the refuse. Chas. C. Perry, the piano tuner with Becker Bros.. He says that the instrument was a surprise for his wife and that site is very much pleased with it Miss Beatrice Nightingale who has been attending a young ladies seminary in Omaha, returned to tier home in this city Saturday evening to spend her holiday vacation with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. it. J. Nightingale. A Boone now has charge of the Neb. Traveling Library, sent out by Hie State Library Association. Anyone wanting books to read may get one by calling at his studio and conforming with the rules of the association. Mflss Lela Chase who has been attend ing Duane college at Crete, Nebraska, is here visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs, W. T Chase and her many triends during the holiday vacation. She ar rived Saturday evening via the B. & M. W. R. Mellor started east lust Satur day to meet his wife, who has been in j Chicago for «ome time past. They re turned to their home in this city Mon day evening and we are glad to say that Mrs. Mellor is very much improved In health. We are informed that a young lady from Paris, Fiance, a gentleman from London, England and several young ladies from the larger cities of the state and the United States were regis tered at the St. Elmo hotel last Satur day. If you want to see one of the prettiest plant- that it lias ever been the pleasure of the writer to'loik upon, just step in to C. W. Conliiser’s store and take, a look at his Christmas Cactus. The plant is just literally loaded with large and beautiful blossoms and it is indeed a treat to the eyes. Miss Frieda Froehlich who lias a position in the United States land otlice at Lincoln, as stenographer, arrived in this city Saturday evening to spend tier holiday vacation with her parents Mr. and Mrs. J. Froehlich. She was ac companied bv Master Harry McAlpine, who cam** up to spend Christmas with his friend. Miss Iieltna. state Consul K. K, Kester of the Mod ern Woodm- n of America, will deliver a lecture at the opera house in this city on Friday evening, .lanuary 8th, l!*o4. Robert Mathew came up from Lin-1 coin Saturday evening to visit nis par ents and friends during the holiday vacation. Mr. and Mrs. E. Holcombe and son. Vance started for Grand Island this morning to spend Christmas with Mr. and Mrs Frank P*rdew. Mrs. Robert Young started for Peru.; this state. Wednesday morning, where she goes to spend the holidays w ith her mother, Mrs. Jesse Rentfrow. I Sylvester J. Krance of Ashton is a new subscriber to the Northwestern having called Saturday morning and added his name to our list. A. T. Conger took a load of goods to Arcadia the fore part of the week and brought back 2,NX) pounds 0* ground feed for the Northern Milling company. Joe O’Bryan and George Rollins ex changed places last Saturday. Mr. Rollins came up this line and Mr. O’Bryan went up the Ord branch. We understand that Joe brought back a tine bull dog with him. E Shack ot Platte county, w ho pur chased the old Blackman farm of Real Estate Agent D. *C. Leach sometime ago, is having a new frame house put upon his property. Uis brother-in-law C. Lindauer of St. Edwards, tills state, is doing the work. A. Zink returned from Terra Haut e Indiana. Friday noon. Lon lias been gone about two weeks and lias been visiting friends and relatives at that place. He says that this is the first trip he has made back to his old home in 20 years and that the place has changed so that he hardly knew it. Richard Cattle and wife of Omaha, arrived here last Tuesday evening fo a two weeks visit with his parents Mr and Mrs. It. J. Nightingale. Richard lias just recovered from a severe sick ness with measles w liieh left his eyes weak, so he concluded to take a few •lays oiT and spend Christmas and New Ye trs at home. A meeting will lx* held Thursday j evening. December :>1, at Society hail for the purpose of organizing a company of National Guards. I J. s. Pedler informs us that he re-1 cieved a telegram last Tuesday evening informing him that a large barn on bis farm in Dawson county had burned to the ground. The building was MO*Go feet in size and the loss is estimated to be about $1000.00. Nick Hansen dropped into our office last Wednesday atpl removed his sub scription. Will lias been working m the Sonder man furniture and undertaking estab lishment while Mr. Sonderman was; visiting in Germany and that gentleman having returned. Will is now looking for another location. It looks as though the people of St. Paul are thinking seriously of building a canning factory. A special from that town to the Oma ha Bee under date of lieu. 20, says: “A number of our moneyed end businessmen have been loo king in to the project of starting a vegetable j canning factory in our city. Five | thousand dollars has already been j subscribed and it will be easy to raise the additional $U,000.
