The doctor said 1 had a complication of female troubles and I could not have any children unless I could be cured, lie tried to cure me, but after experimenting for several mouths, my husband became dis gusted, and one night when we noticed a testimonial of a woman who had beeD cured of similar trouble through the use of Lydia 13. Back of this simple fact lies a new develop ment of the race question, for the judge has decided that hereafter the icourt must use separate Bibles in the swearing of white and negro witness es. There will be a white Bible and la black Bible, or, rather, a Bible for .white witnesses and another for black witnesses. No reason can be imag ined for this departure, except the fear of “race amalgamation.” The ■mere sanitary reason for drawing the color line around Bibles does not seem sound, since white men carry around about as many disease germs las black men. It Is stated that nine of the most successful recent novels aggregated a sale of 1,600,000 copies, and the pa per which these books were printed on was made from pulp for the most part. Now pulp paPer means the de struction of many trees in the great forests of the north, and probably 6,000 were 8acrific,'d for these novels. She trotted a miie in 1:58>4, that, all things considered, out ranks the performance of Dan I’ateh. The weather was cold and penetrat ing and a stiff breeze Mew down the hackstreteh. Her pacemaker, or wind break if you please, was neither one nor the other. All afternoon Driver Millard Saun ders waited in the hope of better con ditions and then a half hour after the racing program was completed he brought out his charge with the an nouncement that the great maro would try, but that the spectators should not be disappointed If she failed, considering the circumstances. Saunders nodded foi the word the first score with “Doc” Tanner, who was driving the pacemaker four lengths in the lead and she was off at what seemed like a 2:30 gait to those not aware of the flawless, frictionless gait of the trotting queen. It was really a 2:00 clip she had struck and Tanner, holding hack the runner so as to prove a more effective windbreak, miscalculated to such an extent that Saunders made a move to pull out and go past her. The runner drew ahead, however, and past the quarter she flew in thirty seconds. The next quarter was half a second fastpr and now the question came— would she falter, facing the wind. But was well trained and in fine condi tion, but ills knockout punch was gone. When Corbett fought Briggs the Denver youth was fat and half trained. but he took things much easier than McGovern, and gained the decision without any such strenuous stunts as Terry had to undergo. If McGovern lias lost the knockout punch that was always his chief stock in trade he might as well give up the sport, or content himself with second class honors. Terry won fights be cause he could outhit any other mau. and Terry without the hitting power is worse than Hamlet shy tho melan choly Dane. Baseball Clubs Make Money. Baseball men have no cause to com plain of the past season. In the Na tional league Pittsburg cleaned up at least $50,000. Cincinnati, with an ex pensive and disappointing team, made $10,000, and Brush in New York is '$60,000 to the good. St. Ixmis and Brooklyn broke even. Philadelphia and Boston lost big money. In the American league Cleveland made $25,000; St. Louis, $10,000; De troit, $10,000; Philadelphia. $50,000; Boston, $60,000. New York and Washington lost money. Griffith's bunch In Gotham probably dropped $25,000, and Tom Loft us’ “Senators’’ must have been $10,000 to the bad when the season closed. To sum it all up, there were only four out of the sixteen leading Dali clubs in the country that lost money. Irom a financial viewpoint this is n TROPHY WON BY LOU DILLON AT MEMPHIS. This is a picture of the gold cup which was fashioned for the Memphis Trotting association, at a cost of $5, 000, last year, and offered as a chal lenge trophy to am iteur drivers. In the first race for it last fall E. E. Smathers won it with Lord Derby. He returned it to the association and lost it when Lou Dillon so decisively defeated Major Del mar in the south ern city. It becomes the permanent property of the gentleman who wins It three successive yearr, or the club which he represents. It was to get a second leg under this cup that prompt ed Mr. Smathers to pay $40,000 for Major Delmar before he had trotted his mile in 2:00 at New York. The cup has three handles. It stands 11% inches without the base and 13% inches with* the base. Its capacity is 3%, pints. no, on she flew faster and faster, the Rpeediest quarter of a mile, the third, being negotiated right in the teeth of the wind in twenty-nine seconds, dem onstrating her gamoness in an unmis takable manner. Down the home stretch they came, the pacemaker seeming to be the only one to falter, and involuntary the shouts came from the stand, “Come on with that runner!” “Come on!" There waB no need for such Bhouts for the mare. She wag coming as no piece of horseflesh had ever come be fore. She was coming on her courage, coming on her stamina, and coming on her willingness to do man’s bidding. Urged she was, but no whip grazed that proud back, no goad dared touch that bundle of nerves, and none was needed, for those dainty little legs of hers were moving with the rhythm of the dove’s wings and the speed of the swallow's, when the timepieces snapped 1:58% by tha three official timers, and in many cases a quarter second faster by those opposite the wire. Not the Old-Time Terry. Eoth of those noted rivals. Young Corbett aid Terry McGovern, have been seen in action recently, and their respectiv > showings did not make any nf the c itics opine that Terry stood much chance of ever defeating his conqueror. Terry fought Jimmy Briggs, vho was recently bested by •.lie Denverite. McGovern gained a de cision over Briggs, but had an awful lime doing so, and was twice sent to the floor by the Chelsea lad. Terry great showing. If indications count for anything at least two of these four losers will make good next year. Promising Athletic Meet. What promises to be one of the most remarkable athletic meetings ever held in this country is the threa day meet that will be held at St. Louis, Mo., Dec. 8, 9 and 10, under the auspices of the New Missouri Athletic club.
