LOCAL N KWS. —The Lincoln Townsite Company bad tbcir sidewalks fixed last week. —The Henry Heins residence is being decorated by Ashton artist this week. —Joe Sewinski and family took advantage of tbe pleasant weather and visited friends and relatives south of town on Sunday last, veiw iDg the crops enroute. —Jacob Albers of Loup City was a pleasant visitor at Ashton Thurs day of last week. Jacob informs 11s that he is an out and out candid ate for the nomination of his party for county assesorship. —A. N. Conklin shipped his large herd of fat cattle to Omaha Satur day. There were five carload, of fine cattle and owing to conditions of the market A. N. believes that he has a lot of worry oirtii* mind. —The crops in this part of the country are about the best we have had for years. Corn is growing fine and if the favorable weather con tinues it will soon catch up with the season. Many farmers are busy harvesting and the small grain iw reported as being well filled. — Ashton was rather metropoliton last ween as regards congenial frac ases. Slaughter house rules were given place in an alteration between John Chapewleski and Tbco. Secre tara. Moth contestants were badly brusied. The law is expected to take a hand and legally grind on the oase this week. —Frank Jezeweski and Doctor Bogen liad a controversey over fi nancial n(lairs Saturday in which some rough language was used. Dr. Bogen made complaint against Jez ewski for assult and battery ai d it is reported that Jezeweski will re taliate in kind. As much as we would like to see the case settled peaceably it promises to be legally contested. Mr. Alonzo Davis and daughter, Mrs. Ella Ervine of Cestos Okla are visiting with ye Ashton Editor and family*. It will be remembered that Mrs. Ervine who is a sister of Mrs. J. F. Smith went to Okla. elev en years ago at the time that a bout 20 more Ashtonites decided to cast their lot in that country. Mrs. Irvine has been one of the success ful ones, having now one of the finest farms on Brunt Creek near Crestos ,Okla. with good crops and fairly well stocked with cattle. The following is what the Falls City Journal has to say of the street Fair recently pulled of at that place: •‘The Street Fair came to a close last Saturday and nobody seemed to care much. There was quite a ciowd on the streets until late at night parading up and down, blowing horns, yelling and throwing confetti. .Viewed as a blatter of history it is the general opinion that the Street Fair was more demoralizing thau stimulating to business. Tak ing the Carnival layout as a whole it was more or less a fake, probably no more than any other concern of this kind but certainly no less. We never could see any reason for pav ing a concern like tiiis to come here aua then changing a first class circus a prohibitive price. Sunday morning the carnival had disappeared and nothing was left but a big pile of empty beer kegs at Fifth aud Stone streets. To be sure the kegs bad been used to support the tumb lers platform but as they stood there amid the quite Sunday morn they brought about the same sensation that must come to a weak man when he wakes up with a headful of tumul tuous sensations and forked aches and sees the empty bottle lying on the table by the bed and the, streets presented a sorry appearanee. They were strewn with waste paper and confetti and other rubbish and all day long men worked cleaning them up. “ Supervisor’s Proceedings Loup City, Neb., July 14th, 1003 Be it remembered that the count] board of supervisors of Sherman coun ty, Neb., met this day at the cour house in Loup City for general businesi aecoidiug to the statutes provided. Present: D. C. Grow, chairman; W O. Brown, John Maiefski, 1’eter Thode W. 11. Chapman, ami Win. Jakob, sup ervlsors, and Geo II. Gibson, clerk. The following business was had am done, to-wit: Minutes of previous meeting read am approved. By motion it was ordered that tin couuty surveyor bo instructed to pro oeed to tbe situ of the Chapman roai as allowed on June 14th, 1902, and io cate the corners of section for tin guidance of the road overseer. James 11. Parshall then came befon the board aud made the propositior that be would remove the old bridge that crossed the uiiii race at tbe site ol tbe Loup City Boiler Mills aud place thereon a “barrel” and grade said roaei to a width of 25 feet aud put it in hrsi class shape for *100.10, and that he would thereafter maintain said crossing aud keep it in good condition at his own expense, which proposition was accepted. 8. It was then by motion ordered that the county treasurer should pay $0,000 of the county bonds, aud that if nec essary he is hereby instructed to pay interest to maturity to procure said bonds. L Adamson then came before the board and offered 85.00 as a minimum price for a tax sale certiticate for the de linquent taxes, interest, etc. for lots 15 and Id, in block 28 original town of Loup City, which proposition was accepted. Ry motion it was ordered that a strip, of land two rods wide be purchased from Fred Thode as follows; commencing at east line of section 35, township 10, range 15 at the quarter stake and runing directly east and intersecting road No. 200 and that Mr. Thode be allowed 830.00 for said strip to bo used for road purposes. Hoard then took up the matter of the Albers road petitions which was, upon due consideration allowed and orderded platted as follows, be giuing at south east corner of north east quarter of Section 27, Township 15, Range 14, and running thence north be tween sections 20 and 27, Township 15, Range 14, and terminating at the north east corner of the north east quarter of said section. The Albers vacation petition was not allowed but was deferred until above road was made passable. Jacob Albers then came before the board and requested that a mimimuin price of 820.00 be placed upon lots 18, lb and 20, block 12, Lalk and Kreich bauin's addition to Loup City for tax sale purposes. Mr. Albers proposition was accepted. W. H. Morgan then came before the board and requested that a minimum price of 830.00 be placed upon lots 19 to 24 inclusive in Lalk and Krelchbaum’s addition and by motiou said proposition was rejected. W F. Mason then offered $50.00 as a minimum price on above lots, which proposition wa# accepted. Board then took up the matter of the examination of the fee books of the different county ollicers and found them correct as submitted as follows; Fee book of County Clerk; 1st quarter, fees collected 8735.47 3d . 807 56 Total . 81003.02 Sheriffs fee books: 1st quarter, fees collected $194.69 ... 1G2.70 Total.$357.39 Superintendents fee books Oolleciton for six months 812.00 County Judge’s fee books: 1st six months of 1903 $337.90 County Treasurer's fee books: 1st. six months of 1903 $1484 57 And by motion fee books were ap proved as above stated County Superintendent, R. D. Hend rickson then came before the board and submitted the following: That on February 14 , 1901. in the division of property between Districts No. 48 and 75, Sherman County, oounty superintendent finds there is due from By motion the clerk was hereby in structed to procure a new set of real district No 48 to No. 75 the sum of $135.10 to be paid as follows; In tw equal installments, one of $07 55, due Jan. 1, 1902, ahd one of 67.55, due .Jan. 1st, 1903, and bearing interest at 7 per ! cent from date, and it appearing to the couuty board from law submitted, that it was the duty of said couuty board to levy a tax for the liquidation of the above indebtedness, it was ordered that a levy or 20 mill* be placed upon all the taxable property of said school district No. 48 for the year 1003 to p|y said obligation. estate iudexes for Sherman county and { made up in a correct manner, as the old are very faulty and eroneous, and cannot be relied upon. To all whom it may concern: The commissioner appointed to view and report upon the vacation of a road_ commencing at a point where the Loup City and St. Paul road strikes the North East quarter of section Ten (10), Town ship 14, Range 13, and which is now ang ling through the said decribed quarter, be vacated as it is no longer needed, has reported in favor of the vacation thereof and all objections thereto or claims for damage must be filed in the County Clerk’s office on or before noon of the 25 day of Spetember, 1903 or such road will be vacated without re ference thereto. Dated this 20 day of July, 1903, Gko. H. Gibson, County Clerk. —The town of Ashton will have to get a move on it to keep pace with the many improvements that are going on in the surrounding country. Horses of Famous Men. It is strange that no one seems to know anything about the various horses that George Washington rode, and that the names of them all seem to have gone down into oblivion. Every one knows about Marengo, the white stallion Napoleon rode at Waterloo, and whose remains are now In the United Services Museum at London. The Duke of Wellington was astride of Copenhagen during the battle and the horse lived to be twenty-seven. Richard III. owned White Surrey, and it was for him that he wanted to trade a kingdom. Wil liam III.'s favorite horse was named Sorrel, and was blind in one eye, as was Savoy, the favorite horse of Charles VIII, of France.—Springfield Republican. STOLE LIGHT FROM WIRES. Hotelkeeper Thought It Cheaper Than Feeing Electrical Company. A hotelkeeper In the City of Mexi co, whose place was always brilliant ly lighted by electric lamps, appar ently without regard to cost, has recently been convicted by a local judge for stealing from the electric light company the current with which his hostelry was lighted. He was condemned to a year's imprisonment and a fine of $33.70, and, as an addi tional penalty, was “disqualified for all kinds of public honors and em ployments.” The landlord who attempted to evade the electric company’s charges wired his house and made a connec tion with the company’s cables, with the intention, as he pleaded, of call ing at the office of the company and explaining the matter at a later day. He also declared that he had used the current for “only a month.” The company had its suspicions aroused and applied to the court for authority to make an examination of the hotel lighting system, which was granted, with the result of revealing the fraud.
