There were 45 Ashtonitcs at St. Paul on the Fourth. Mrs. A. N. Conklin and son spent the Fourth visiting friends at Aurora Nebraska. Mr. Sutton anil wife have been vis iting friends and relatives here the past week. Frank Waselewski visited his reatives here the Fourth, returning to Omaha Monday. The special meeting of M. W. A. was postponed from last week uni il July 9th, owing to the heavy rain of last week. Mr. Stnintiwski. of Grand Island, father of otir primary school taachei spent Monday and M'tu'ai ! in visit ing frfbnds in Ashton. An evening Sunday School picnic will be given at the residence of Mr, and Mrs- .1. P Taylor’s, on Wednesday eve ning July 8th. S. Galczenski’s stallion’s took a spin down main st reet mondav morning with a cart attached. No damage other than the smashing of the cart occurred. Miss Alice Ojendyk came home from Grand Island last Friday night, after taking a series of dress making lessons and working three months at the trade in that city. The Sunday School picnic which was to be held at Raker's grove on the Fourth was postponed od account of the condition of the roads. Mrs. Herbert illy died at the Lin coln hospital, where she was taken last week for treatment. Her death oraired July nth. She was compelled to undergo an operation which proved fatal. The body was brought to Ashton for interment. Mrs. Anton Lamprect. a pioneer resident of Howard county, died at her home, live miles east ot Ashton, on Tuesday from a complication «f diseases with which she has been afflicted for six years past. The fun eral took place at Posen on Wednes day. July 8th, Rev ltadka has been busy of late looking after the interests of the new parsonage and taking subscriptions fer the same. Ashton and its parish ought to donate liberally to the new building and all should work in harm ony to further the success in this good undertaking. As Ashton has kept quiet this year in regard tw a celebration a committee is now at work making arrangements for a harvest jubilee to take place the latter part of August or the first week in September, in which all the soci eties of Ashton and vncinity are ex pected to participate. A very pleasant surprise party was held at the residence »f Air. and Airs. Longstaff last Wednesday even ing. About fifty persons took posession eiT the Longstalf residence and made merry with a feast of ice cream and strawberries. After the good things were disposed of singing was indulged in until midnight. The Ashton township board met at Ashton on Tuesday’ July 7th and tran sacted general business. A joint meeting was held with the village board in the evening to confer with ts members in regard to the proper di vision of the road district and sup plies. Harmony prevailed throughout the joint session and everybody seemed satisfied The following Ashtonites attended the Fourth of July celebration at St. Paul: Mr. and Mrs. Robert Swauek and children, Air. and. Airs. G. W. Marvell, John Jeweski, Wm. Knutzen, Leonard Hop, Todd Conklin, Frank Topolski, The Misses Barbra and Josie Jezewski, Clara and Helen Jamrog. Lizzie G<1 czowski, Celia Conklin, Anna Aiolinski and several others whose names wo did not get. There is, and has been of late, some very decided kicking in regard to the sidewalks in the village. Some time ago an ordinance was passed to lay sidewalks in Ashton which was done as far as the villagers were concerned. Then comes the Lincoln Town Site Company and the Keystone Lumber Company two coporations, and refuse to lav the sidewalk in defiance of any law Thus we have the power of corpor ations, and as one of the board says, “the blurt must and shall work' as Ashton has not the ways to force it. Quite a gathering of folks from surrounding country came to Ashton the Fourth although there was nothing going on in the line of entertainment A majourty of the residents in the village went to St. Paul, ami those that stayed at home visited one another, told old time stories ami played games. There was an effort made to have a dance at the park which was a failure. Lew William’s team was tied in front of Conklin's stors ami we frightDed by the festive fire crackers and took a bee line for borne. We have not heard as to what damage was done to the team or buggy.
