To THE LaIHKS Of THE UNITY' CLUH: Tie a it La hi ks—Last week we got col lected, and in a measure punished for having meddled too much with your business. That’s all right. You did the right thing, at the light time. Our motto has ever been, that those wdio give too much time and attention to other peoples’ business, almost iovariably is tak ing the wrong fork in the road to suceess, and unless be backs up, and starts in on tbo other branch of the road, is liable to loose his hearing and pull up at the wrong hitching post. And so, on this bright, beautiful May morning, we turn back to the poii t of beginning, and in retracing our steps, take back with us all we said about that petition or park, even including the beautiful poem, which cost us nearly un hour of hard mental labor. While we are thus retracing our steps, wo might state that we nau good reason to suppose Hint the in formation which we recieved regard ing that so called petition, was per feetly reliable. But when one of jour number tells us that it is not a petition, that settles it. We now understand that it is called a resolu tion, passed by jour members in regular session assembled, urging Hie village hoard to furnish you with such information, printed mat ter, etc., as will enable you to co operate with them and assist them in cleaning up the town and esiab lishiog enterprises, etc. etc. Very likely the board needs assistance in this matter, and we might suggest that the very best method you could employ in carrying on the good work is to commence at the very point where the board has so often tried and failed: that of inducing every woman’s husband who bus real estate property within the city limits to clean up, especially in cases where no pretentions to cleaning up is made. Some of the real estate agents might be induced to shed their broad cloth, and with the aid of the armstrong sythe, swipe down a few weeds on some of the non residenee lots iu the village, and for which they are agents. They might do this and take pay for the job out c.f the rent, or if not out of the rent, knock off a little oftbeir commission. Id presenting your case to the rial estate men, go after them iu earnest. Tell them that the little lost in labor is not to be compared with the net gains in commissions on lot and land sales because of a pretty ap pearance of tbe oity. No doubt there are many other ways in which you could be of valuable assistance, and we hope you will use your best energies in this direction, and, if we could be of any help, would like to co operate with you in your co oper ation with the town board in bring ing about such a reformation in city matters as will cause favorable com rnent from all who visit us. Your co-operative friend, Geo. E. Ben. Fred Fuller, son of F. VV. Fuller, of flazzard, has devised a plan to prevent the flooding of a particular ly fine 50-acre tract of land along the creek on his tarther’s farm, at Hazzard, and proposes to build a dike several hundred feet long and has rented the big Fairfield township road grader with which to do the work. The land is particularly salt able for Alfalfa, if the danger of flooding during the freshets can be overcome. Young Mr. Fuller is a graduate of Ivnox college, and has tiad several years schooling in elect rical engineering at Cornell Univers ity—Revenna News Secretary Hoot is making provis ions for the immediate assembling of tbe General Staff as soon as the law goes info effect next Augest and orders to that effect have been is sued. The first intimation of a scandal in the Army which involve* officers who have been stationed in Alaska lias just been given by the issuance of orders for general count martial It stems that all the > Ulcers located at Skugway about a year ago are in volved in what is beleived to have been wholesale speculation of com missary supplies. The high prices of these commodities ottered except ional opportunities and it is said that large quantities furnished for army use were sold to the public aDd the officers pocketed the pro ceeds. Another Alaskan officer is to be tried for a shortage discovered in his account. He claims that bis safe was broken open and looted but he will be called upon to prove the fact to a court martial. These cases are all in of General Funston. PKKACHES *<* THIS I'ttl)8II>KNT. President ltoo9evelt listened to a sermon by Rev. L. A Arthur, reclor of the Episcopal churches of 5t. Paul and Grand Island, last Suuday. No special arrangements had been made for this feature of his visit, it being thought proper for the president to select a place of woisbip for himself upon his arrival in Grand Island. This he declined to do, requesting Dr. 11 C Miller of the reception committee to con duct him to any church he desired. As I)r. Miller is au Episcopalian he took the president to hear Rev. Arthur, who showed excellent tack by contiuing Inmself to the regular services. No reterenee was made to the presence ol the chief execu tive excepting once in prayer. P. G. Sbanstrom and family of this city, who are absent Episcopalians and never neglects au opportunity to bear ltev. Arthur, wore in the con gregation. It is said that the un csrtainty in regard to where the president would worship resulted in every church being filled to overflow ing, hundreds of people who had not heard a sermon for years bemg as close to the “amen corner" as they could get.—St. Paul Republican.
