For twenty years we have pub
lished the cun 11v supervisor's pro.
ceedings, column alter column, paie
after page of them for nothing It
has given us weeks and months of
hard labor, and all for nothin r.
And yet in the face of all this, stands
out iu blue pencil mark, on the mar
gin ot the sworn statement of our
claim in the county claim register,
the word, “taken for taxes ”
(Jreat crowds greeted the presi
dent as he went through Nebraska.
At (Jrand Is! mu. Hastings, Lincoln
and Omaha there was a surging
mass of people on every side and
cheer after chper went up when he
appeared. At all of these places
the president made a ringing speech
and was loud in his praise of Neb
raska and tier people. He paid a
splendid tribute to the old soldiers
at (Jrand Island and spoke in glow
ing terms of the fine educational in
stitutions of the state. The great
crowds of school children at the
various stations never failed to re
ceive his special attention. His
train made schedule lime at every
point.
_ . , , _
We noticed in some of our ex
changes that in different counties ;
throughout the state the county |
commissioners or supervisors have
been in the habit of paying the
printer for publishing the proceed
mgs of the county board. In Sher
man county it never tins heeu done
and the papers have always pub
lished them at considerable cost to ^
the publisher and free of charge to,
the county and as a matter of news, j
While we realize that we are doing j
u great deal of work for practically j
n > pay, vet we believe that the pub
lic should be kept posted on the do
ings of the county board, and so the
Northwestern will continue to
print them, pay or no pay. How j
long we shall feel like hantlling such |
a large amount of work for simply !
the fun of the thing we do rot
kuow.
M C. Mu lick is the on ly applicant for
a -aloon license in Sherman county that
lias complied with the states law that re
quire* that all notices for saloon license
shall tie published in the paper wtlh the
largest circulation in theoouiry and the j
'1 i nes-lndependent claims to have the
1 irgest bonl tied circulation of any paper
published in the county —Sherman
County Times-Independent.
How in the world the publisher of ■
the l’imes Independent can have the
affronterv to publish such astutment 1
in the face of the fact is something
that we cannot just see into. The
Northwestern not only claims the
largest circulation but actually has
the largest, and any one interested in
the matter can find t h is out by call
ting at this office. To make it plain,
*o that even the Times man can un
derstand it, we will state that wc
have, iu our possession a statement
from the Western Newspaper Union,
dated April (i, lDOfi.one of the Times’
ip statement* of prints which calls
for a payment of only $2 4 8 for
v'y tin weeks' shipment, ami at the
rate of 13 cents per quire, the same
as we pay the same bouse for tne
K same size patent, he would be only
ft receiving 19 quires of paper or a
I t Ital circulation of 4.">i*. Now tbi
■ Noiituwestern is receiving just 22i
ft quires of paper for which we pav
jj|p2.92 cents per week. Of this we
have about 15 copies which we sent
out as samples each week, leav
ing ss almost 22 quires, bonified
circulation Deducting the sample
copies we still have almost three
quires more than toe Times. In
it other words Brown’s circulation,
samples and all (if he is sending
samples) amount to just 45(1 while
we have a circulation exclusive of
HI
JF samples, of 520.
Now in conclusion we will sa.
that we never would have made tl
matter public but for this un warrant
ed and untruthful statement contain
ed in the above extract. We receiv< <i
