tViohlngtuD Social.
The school in district No. 10 gave a
social at the school house, Saturday
eveuing, February 21. Most of the resi
dents of th- district were present; also,
a few friends from neighboring districts.
Hie first part of the program waa fur
nished by the school children; the last
part consisted of recitations and re
marks by some >f the friends of the
school. Three of the teichers present
offered some remarks on the subject of!
libraries in our rural schools.
At the close of tho program, a com
mittee of five was appointed to decide
upon an entertainment to be given for
the purpose of raising money to pur
chase a library for the school The com
mittee,consisting of Messrs. E. E Tracy,
George-Truelsen and William Jung and
Mcsdami s Kiefl'er and Jung, decided to
hold a basket social at the school house,
on Friday evening, March 13.
After the program, some time was
spent in becoming acquainted and visit
ing. Everyone present seemed to be
endeavoring to entertain someone else,
consequently everyone had an enjoyable
lime. A few of the gentlemen in the
district, who doubted the teachers’ culi
inary ability, secretly planned and pur
chased the refreshments for the evening,
which consisted of cookies, apples and
peanuts. These were served in a very
acceptable manner. The people in this
district evidently know how to have
a good time. J
Developing Better Seed.
Every farmer knows, of course, that
one of the worst mistaken tie can make
is to plant poor seed, but every farmer
does not know the difference between
the. very best and that which is not so
good. Poor seed is a bad investment,
became tf it makes a difference of 0111}’
a few bushels to the acre it is a loss of
many dollars. Some of the most inter
esting experiments of recent years has
been the work of breeding better seed
and improving it, just the same as live
stock has been improved by intelligent
breeding.
The I wentietli Century Farmer is pub
lishing a most interesting series of artl
eles by Thomas i, Ly>>n of the Nebras
ka Agricultural Experiment station on
breeding wheat and corn. These and
other articles along the same lines should
be carefully studied by every farmer wno
uses his brains to make bis farming pay
