Kditor Northwestern: Dear Sir:—The present session of our legislature, at which most peo ple think theie is little for the mem bers to do, except to look wise and draw their pay, is frought with more important questions than it is given credit for. The idea seems to have gone out that a state raormal school will he established some place west of the sixth principal martdian and every town on that side of the imaginary line is clamoring for the plum, and their representatives deluged with petitions, etc., giving them to under stand in an informal way, that if the other fellow captures the prize, their political head will pay the for feit. Let the people of this com muuit) abide themselves in peace and entertain no nightmares over the proposition, but join with the state at large in telephoning (heir respective representatives to shelve the bill. We have been on the ground and by special request, accom panied the governor and a com miilte from both wings of the state house on :t tour of inspection of the state penitentiary, and while gazing upon thatonce magnificent structure the only thought that came to us was llosewater’s apnelatiou to the old Union Pacific depot at Omaha, “cowshed.” The only part of our slate pen that is still worthy the name is the outer wall, which was lined with aimed men topreveut the convicts from becoming disgusted and leaving the place. The senator or representative that would sanction the establishing of more state institutions with the shad ow of that ramshackle welling up before him, should be brought be fore the board of insanity or be con demed to be escorted around by the iuportant ungeutkmanly, son of a-gun that had us in tow, for the balance of their natural life. The tocsim at the capital seems to be retrenchment and reform, and may the Lord preserve them and pursuarie them to pass gome revenue measure that will lift that two million dollar debt from our shoulders and make the raidroads pay their share of our taxation, world without end, Amen. But them if I quit without saying that the Middle Loup Valley is rep resented at Lincoln this time I would be derelict in my duty. Mr. Kittell is conspicuous at the east end of the capital, and our Aaron is easily the leader in the west wing. When oc cupy in g the Lieutenant Governor's chair in committee of the whole, his grace, ability and parlamentary ease is highly commented upon by all, and when on the door ot the Benate bis pointed thrusts with ori lorical javelins makes him a power in debate, and bis repartee and spon taneous How of wit the Burdelt of the senate. Arcadia, our sister up the valley, can also write the names of her Mr. Fries in the senate and Dr. Bartoo in the house, upon her tablets of fame and always feel proud that she furnished them. Excuse us, we know your space is valuable, but we eould’ut quit any sooner. G. II. Gibson. A LKtTKK FROM THE COAST Los Angeles, Cal., Jan. lthb.,1903 Q E Bknschoter. Editor, Perhaps you and your readers wlllen ; j iy a few lines from a wanderer in this i land of honey, herring, hot-tom«les, liallibut, beer, whisky and wine. This land is heaven home for hoboes by the thousand. They can live without work, for food is plentiful and cheap. The huge granite boulders of tbe foot hills are warmed by the beat of the sun and turned into beds of down by night for the weary lazy limbs of the happy hobo. Los Angeles is a bustling busy city, eighteen miles from the coast and about tbe si me distance from the mountains, which tower up in magnificent appall ing granduer in tbe distance The city covers a vast area of territory, spreading aroun J like the Platte river The chief industry is the culture of vegetables, (lowers, frail*, friends and tourists. Thousands of decaying humanity come here for a longer leaie of life, while other thousands of wealthy and healthy people are here to eD joy the sunlight of an eternal spring. Electric car* run in every direction entering the numerous towns within a radius of twenty miles; round-trip fares only fifty cents. Santa Monica, Redonda, San Pedro and Long Beach are among the many sea-coast, towns, one can visit in an hours travel on these delightful scenic railroads. Lots iu towns on the coast sell for from §1,500 to §3,500 and they are pure sand, just as you have It in the middle of Loup River. People build magni ficent homes and business houses on these sand bar?. In Los Angeles many corner lots sell for from §50,000 to §100,000 but here the soli is firm. Half tbe city Is made up of eating bouses and one can get a fair meal for 20c. The town is full of gold brick agents, wild cat propositions, bunco-steerers, pick pockets and hot-air machines, all intend ed for the amusement, entertainment, and benefit of the tender foot Tbe splendor of the city parks here and at Pasadena bafile description. I am con vinced that tbe greatest calamity that ever befel the benighted nations of tbe ancient worM, was in their having pass ed away without a knowledge of tbe actual exlstance of Southern California, that their fabled Atlantis, never seen, save in the hallowed vision of inspired poesy was. in fact, but anolher name for Pasadenie; that the golden orchards of Hesperides was but a poetical syno nym for the par ks and beer gardens in the vicinity of Los Angeles. The activ ity in tbe city of Los Angeles acts on the tenderfoot like a draugh from the fountain of vouth. It behooves him to become agile, athletic and alert, that he may avoid being down-trodden and crushed in tbe mad rush of these hustl ing busy people. Here is the climate of Los Angeles, unquestionably the most salubrious and delightful to be found anywhere on the Lord’s earth Now I. have always been under tbe impression, as 1 presume other gentleman have, that in the re gion along the ,Pacflo ocean it was foggy and cold enough to chill the nat ives of the frigid zoue. But I see it represented on the map, that Los Angel es is situated exactly half way between tbe latitudes of Paris and Venice, so gentleman who have inhaled the air ot the one or basked in the golden sun light of the otter, may see at a glance that Los Angeles must be a place of un told delight, a terrestrial paradice, fann ed by the balmy zephyrs of an eternal spring, clothed in the gorgeous sheen of ever-blooming flowers, and vocm with tbe silvery melodies of natnres choicest songsters Yes,— This is the land of cedar and vine, Where the flowers ever blossom, the beems ever shine: Where the light wings of zepher oppressed with perfume, Wax faint o re the gardens of Pasadena in bloom: Where the citeon and olive are rairest of fruit, And the voice of the land agent never is mute. Where the tints of the earth and the hues of the sky, In color through varied. In beautv may vie. It would be well for the children ol your scheols tu memorise these ract lines, as they are the purest kind ol poetry and very suggestive of the an of thia kind of composition, breathing, as they do the soul of fancy.
