But as I was sick all the spring I did not feel much like wriling. When 1 recovered sol could, 1 got right to work clearing my iahd and getting in a crop, I being weak, it took but little to keep me down, so 1 did not get well until tall. Although I worked all summer 1 have been very bardv this fall and winter, but have been so very busy I bav’nt taken time but once to write to my mother. My land is timber land, I have 35 acres plowed up 20 acres of it is in fall wheat and rye. I raised 30 bushel of pot atoes, after roasted they are tine. 1 also have about 30 acres (leared for meadow, which I mowed this year. 1 did a floe job of clearing my grain fields. I took out all tbc stumps but two. My 20 acres of grain is clear ed up so nice it is as fiue as a field of pratiie ground and worked up much nice’, 1 want to have 100 acres by ; oex fall. 1 um gettiDg the tuabti reaiy for building now. If you wish information about positions of this kind you can obtain it free by writing for the Civil Service announ cement of the Columbian Corres pondence College, Washington, D. C. The Civil Service Commission will hold examinations to secure young men and women for these places during March and April, at Beatrice, Grand Island and Omaha. From 3,046 appointments during the first year of Mr. McMtnley’s administra tion, they have increased to nearly rive times that number. President Roosevelt is a firm believer in the merit system, and as long as he is president these appointments will coninue to increase. MlDWIN I'ER KX ’l'itSION TO • FLORIDA. The Burlington Route again offers i midwinter excursion to Flordia, to ve N'd't aftka poitc -t Tuesday Jau uary <i. Through Standard Pullman Sleepers will be run from Lincoln and Omaha to Jacksonville, Flordia doing away with the necessity of any change of cars. The route will be via St. Louis and thence to Jacksonville’ Flordia closly following the line of Shermans famous march to the sea. The Journey will be pleasantly broken at Chattanooga, Tennessee where a day will be spent in visiting Lookout Mountain and other points of hist oric interest. Those who desire to stop over in St. Louis can join the party enroute. The excursion will be personally conducted by the Burlington Route who is fatnilar with points of inter est en route and in Florida. After leaving Jacksonville members of the party will have the choice of a num ber of attractive side trips, and may return home at there leisure. An j exceedingly low rates for this excur sion, and the opportunity to escape the snow and ice, the wintry blasts and coal bills at home is a notable one.
