THE ISTHMIAN CANAL
_
I
EASTERN PAPER SAYS THE SCHEME
IS AN OLD ONE.
Cpaninh Monarch Planned lh« Work
One Hundred Venn Uefnre the 1*11
Crlm Father* I.anded at Plymouth—
Had to lie Given I’p.
So we are to have an Isthmian canal
at last It will seem odd to have a ses
sion of Congress without debates on
that subject. The scheme is three
times as old as the nation that is to
carry it out.
The report of the isthmian canal
commission is prefaced by an interest
ing review of the history of this
project. The early explorers, as is
well known, thought that they were
going to be able to sail from Europe
westward, straight to India. When
they found a continent in the way,
they thought for a long time that then
must surely be some natural passage
through it. But within seven years
after the discovery of the Pacific by
Balboa, the idea of connecting the two
oceans by a shin canal had begun to
take shape, says the Philadelphia
Evening Post.
In 1620, Just one hundred years be
fore the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth,
Charles V. ordered surveys for such a
canal to be made at Panama. The
project was revived by another royal
decree in 1634? The Tehauntepec, Nic
aragua, Panama and Darien routes
were all urged a6 they have been near
ly four hundred years later. In 1780,
during the American revolution. Nel
son was engaged in naval operations
against the Spanish territories at Nic
aragua, and he anticipated almost the
very words of the advocates of the
Nicaragua canal at the present day.
In 1814 the Spanish cortes voted to
authorize the construction of a canal
for vessels of the largest size, but cir
cumstances compelled Spain to re
linquish the enterprise.
As soon as the Spanish-Americana
had secured their independence they
promptly turned their attention to the
canal question, in 1S25 the young Re
pupblic of Central America notified the
United States that an American com
pany was ready to undertake the con
struction of the Nicaragua canal, and
urged the conclusion of a treaty to
promote the scheme. The inter-oceanio
, canal question was one of the chief
j subjects of discussion in the Panama
congress of 1826. At that time the Re
public of Central America had entered
into a contract with the sanguine
American company, the forerunner of
so many others. The company agreed
to begin work within twelve months,
if possible, but at any rate, within six
months afterward. That was Just
three-quarters of a century ago, and
the canal is still patiently waiting.
But now that Uncle Sam has taken
hold of the undertaking things will
probably begin to move.
TROUBLES OF A TRAVELER.
Gave tli© Conductor a Chance to Make
a Witty Retort*
"I have almost become accustomed
to the pranks played by the motormen
of Brooklyn trolley cars on the long
suffering traveling public,” observed
a resident of that borough the other
day, "but I most strenuously object to
being insulted by the conductor in the
bargain. I boarded a ‘standing room
only' trolley car yesterday, and had
just got inside the door and was look
ing about for a nice strap, on which to
hang, when the motorman gave us a
short stop. It meant a quick start for
me. I went sailing through the car
as if I’d been sent for. You couldn't
have passed me with anything unless
it had been thrown. I landed against
the front door with a thud, and was
just getting my bearings when the ras
cal on the front end did it all over
again. It didn’t seem so far going
back, but when I crashed into the
rear door the conductor yanked it open
and snarled:
“ 'Do you want to get out here?’
" ‘No,’ said I. 'I want to stay in.’
“ ‘Well,’ said he, ‘if you want to ride
on this car you’ll have to stop running
up and down the aisle.’
“ ‘I’d be a bird if I could do that,’
said I.
“ ‘Well, be a bird,’ said he, ‘but light
somewhere.’ ”—New York Tribune.
Snow From a Clear Sky.
The most wonderful snowstorms of
all that may be seen every winter In
the Adirondacks are those that prevail
when the sky is cloudless. Of these
there are several varieties. Every
week or two we would see what looked
like a fog form about the distant hills,
and then come drifting across the
creek valley. Doubtless it*was a real
inow-laden cloud that had been drift
ing along until it struck our level
(1,300 feet above the sea) in the Adi
•ondacks, when the conditions became
favorable for the release of its feath
;ry burden, says a writer in Scribner’s.
We saw these clouds fill the air with
lakes that were driven along almost
torizontally by a strong gale, although
the tops of our old hemlocks and
ipruce rose Into the clear air and ob
ftructed sunlight above the highest
'evel of the snow-producing air strat
im. We even saw the snow so thick
;rees six feet above the earth were not
n the air about us that the trunks of
risible, although the treetops could be
teen, and the sun shone down through
.he shallow storm with strength
;nough to cast distinct shadows. We
lave stood on a quiet, sunlit hilltop,
ind looked down into a valley less
than 100 feet below us, where a snow
storm was raging with violence, and
:he temperature was frigid.

Delicately formed and gently reared, women will
find, in all the seasons of their lives, as maids or wives
or mothers, that the one simple, wholesome remedy
which acts gently and pleasantly and naturally, and
which may be used with t ruly beneficial effects, under
any conditions,when the system needs a laxative—Is—
Syrup of Figs. It is well known to be a simple com
bination of the laxative and carminative principles of
plants with pleasant, aromatic liquids, which are
agreeable and refreshing to the taste and acceptable
to the system when its gentle cleansing is desired.
Many of the ills from which women suffer are of
a transient nature and do not come from any organic
trouble and it is pleasant to know that they yield so
promptly to the beneficial effects of Syrup of Figs,
but when anything more than a laxative is needed it
is best to consult the family physician and to avoid
the old-time cathartics and loudly advertised nos
trums of the present day. When one needs only to
remove the strain, the torpor, the congestion, or
similar ills, which attend upon a constipated condi
tion of the system, use the true and gentle remedy—
Syrup of Figs—and enjoy freedom from the depres
sion, the aches and pains, colds and headaches, which
are due to inactivity of the bowels.
Only those who buy the genuine Symp of Figs
can hope to get its beneficial effects and as a guar
antee of the excellence of the remedy the full name
of the company —California Fig Syrup Co. is
printed on the front of every package and without
it any preparation offered as Syrup of Figs is fraud
ulent and should be declined. To those who know the
quality of this excellent laxative, the offer of any
substitute, when Syrup of Figs is called for, is
always resented by a transfer of patronage to some
first-class drng establishment, where they do not
recommend, nor sell false brands, nor imitation
remedies. The genuine article may be bought of all
relinble druggists everywhere at 50 cents per bottle.
