Miss Stone the American mission
ary has been released from her
prison so has Mme Tsilka who
was captured with her in tire district
of Salonika. They were well and
strong and seemed to have go< d
treatment during their captivity.
Most any country could afford to
care well for its prisoners for $00,
OOO'OO per head.
President Roosevelt has submitted
his unswer to the appeal of Admiral
Schley, for a rehearing. He accords
praise to both Schley and Sampson
but in the main agrees with, and
seems to be satisfied with the fiudings
of the court of inquiry. He seems
fully satisfied that no good can result
from the reopening of the unhappy
controversy.
There is a constant and increasing
demand for the bonds of the United
States and they are selling at 108
and three-eights, a remarkable price
for a two per cent bond. The four
per cents are selling as high as 140
and one-half. In contrast with our
prices are those of British “consols”
once thought to be the standard
investments of the world. They are
at 95, and the French ,‘i per cents
are at par. German threes are
below ninety. A nother assurance
of United States prosperity.
There is often a very thin veil
between comedy and tragedy. Last
week, just as the comedian, Jeffer
son de Angehs, was going on the
stage at La Cross, Wis., to amuse the
audience in the “Royal Rogue”, he
received a telegram telling him of
his son’s death in New York, lie
acted, however, and none knew the
father’s anguish behind the mask of
levity that he wore. At the end of
the performance he took the train
for New York.
A statistical catalogue of the
kinds of Democrats in the country
discloses just twenty-eight varieties.
A few of them run as follows: Bryan
* democrats, Hill democrats, Croker
democrats, Cleveland, Gorman, Sam.
Tilden, Andrew JacksoD, Thomas
Jefferson, “Torn’’ Johnson, Webster
Davis, “Pitchfork” Tillman demo
crats and other demopops two numer
ous to mention. These factions
seem to be working one against the
other and there is but little hope of
sumA politically speaking, of
eilln^men viewed by a conservative
member of the old democratic party.
Prince Henry of Prussia, the rep
resentative of his brother, the em
peror of Germany, reached New York
last Sunday, February 23, and was
cordially welcomed as a guest of
the nation. The prince was right
royally recieved and expressed much
pleasure of the manner in which our
people greeted him. After honors
had been paid him by the New
Workers he went to Washington
where he was received by president
Roosevelt with a warm welcome.
He will make a tour through the
country but it is hardly expected
that he will get to Loup City.
The State Journal of the 20, con
tains the following dispatch from
• Grand Island:
Grand Island, Feb. 25 —The Fi

timore to-day paid into the county
treasury of Hall county the sum of
$12,305 Rue on the bond of ex
County Treasuier and Present rep
resentative William Tbomssen, who
had deposited $15,000,00 of the
county's money in the Bank of com

1800. The payment winds up all
the litigation there has been in thii
shortage.
This is the case which we referred
to last week as being decided b\
the supreme court against the treas
urer of Hall countv, and a ca*u
which was practically the same n«
ho one in which the $5,000 deposii
was made and lost by this county.

American jurisdiction over insular
domains can stand on the merits of
its accomplishment.. Havana, once
the hotbed of y ellow fever and small
pox, is now better off than New York
and a host of other American cities,
to say nothing of London and Europ
ean countiies. This state of affairs is
a notable triumph for the American
regime; and those gentlemen who
are so prone to discount our colonial
or “imperialistic” policy cannot ca
vil at the improvement.
The public schools over which the

tVolves Atlll Plague France.
We are accustomed to thinking of
France as a country every Inch of
which 1h settled and cultivated and
to regard the wolves which once
swarmed in that fair country as hav
ing vanished long ago. But it seems
that wolves still are numerous and
destructive to life and property. So1
rapidly did the wolves increase after
the war with Germany that in 1882 a1
law was passed offering a reward foi
every oris of these animals killed
Sinse the institution of these pre
miums nearly 9,000 wolves have been
killed and over $130,000 has been paid
out in premiums. Last year there
were 115 wolves killed. For killing a
she wolf with young $30 is paid; for
a full-grown wolf of either sex $20,
and for whelps $8 apiece. In medieval
times wolves were the great pest of
France. They killed people at the
very gates of Paris and were even
known to prowl about the city streets
it night.

F. A. WERMAN, OF BALTIMORE, 8AY8:
Baltimore, Md., March 30, 1901.
Gtnllewun : — Being entirely cured of deafness, thanks to your treatment, I will now give you
a full history of my case, to be used at your discretion.
About five years ago my rigbt ear began to sing, and this kept on getting worse, until I lost
my hearing in this ear entirely.
I underwent a treatment for catarrh, for three months, without any success, consulted a num
ber of physicians, among others, the most eminent ear specialist of this city, who told me that
only an operation could help me, and even that only temporarily, that the head noises would
then cease, but the hearing in the affected ear would lie lost forever.
I then saw your advertisement accidentally in a New York paper, and ordered your treat
ment. After I had used it only a few days according to your directions, the noises ceased, and
to-day, after five weeks, my hearing in the diseased ear has been entirely restored. I thank you
heartily and beg to remain Very truly yours.
