The Northwestern -- g—m*-r-rrrrrr-1_'-JgPl PUBLISHED EVERY FRIDAY AT THE COUNTY SKAT. IIEO. E. HENSCHOTEK, Editor and Pntillaber TEKMSl —11.00 PKK TKAH, IF PAID IN AOVANOK Entered at the Loup City Postofftoe for trans mission through the mails as second class matter. For several years past the business men of Loup City, with possibly two or three exceptions fail, almost entirely to give any suppirt to the local uewspapers. They will send off for stationery anil use all other methods of advertising which costs them a large amount of money wheu the local papers are continu ally giving them free ads and local mention. At the same time they aie forever kicking about the people patronizing the catalogue houaes and sending away for goods when, as they say, you can buy a better grade of goods for the same money at home. This i* no doubt true, but if this rule holds good in the general merchandise business why will it not hold good in almost every branch of industry. Nearly every firm in town have started in the new year with a lot of costly ad vertising in the shape of calan ders and but few of them have not had even a local ad in either of the papers for months. We know of one firm which spent over $60.00 for calanders this year, and whose advertising in the local papers for the whole year of 1901 did not amount to a five dollar bill, and yet he denounces the catalogue sys tem of trade in tbe most emphatic manner. In this he is not alone. There are several others his equal in this respect and we believe one that can go him one better. And yet, in the face of these facts, nearly every merchant in town has the courage to suggest to the editors of this town, that they should take up the cause against the catalogue houses and plead • . ■ i I I A . t lltl witn the people 10 patronize me local merchant*. It seems that they consider printers ink valuable when it comes to putting up an argument which will work to their advantage, but that it don’t do any good to use it by way of advertising. Last year we run a Montgomr,r} Ward and Co’s ad two months lor ^hve dollars. Not because we want ed to run it (we have refused such ads time and time agaiD) but because we had to have them five dollars and because the local merchants would not buy our space. For more than five year* past the local merchants have practically ignored the columns of the home newspaper and we are now compelled to accept almost every foreign ad that comes along where there is a dollar in it. It is wrong for our people to patronize the catalogue houses when they can do a9 well or better at home but there is no mors darapbool ishness in their doing so then their is in our merchants utterly ignoring the home newspapers when it comes to abvertising. County Treainrsr Liable. In decisions given by the court at the recent sitting ex-County Treasur er Thomessen of Hall county, and his bondsmen are held liable for ^ funds lost in a bank in which connty funds were kept. Opinions in both cases were written by Commissioner Kirkpatrick. The sillabi of the de cisions are as follows: Thomessen vs. Hall county. Error. Hall. Affirmed. Kirkpatrick C. de partment No 1. Reported. An action brought against a coun ty treasurer and bis bondsmen fort be recovery of moneys alleged to have been converted by euck treasurer, is not prematurely brought if commen ced after the termination of the term of office of such treasurer and after be has given a bond and qualified as bis own successor in office. •2. In this state, a county treasurer is an insurer of the funds which come into his hands ex-officio, and such treasurer and his bondsmen, can not m action by the county to recovei funds not necoun'ed for, plead thal such funds were lost without any fault or neglect on the part of th< treasurer by the failure of a bank ii which they were deposited for safe keeping only, and in good faith be lieving such banK to be solvent,— | State Journal. i I ho above is a rope full of knots | for the pop party of this county to untie. The Times editor will be expected to untie them. In case he is not on ,duty the assisteut editor assisted by the ex-comity attorrey will be expected to under take the job, and if they are in disposed perhaps the x x treasur er and his bondsmen can throw some light on the subject; and should they fail to give the needed information, then the supervisors who were in command at the time the $5,000.00 was lost in the Peo ples State bank will be expected to, at least untie enough knots at one end of the rope Budlcent to make a noose large enough to lasso the remnant of the whole pop party, politieaily speaking. The above decision was handed down by a pop ulist Supreme Judge of this state and the case iu question was one identical with the one in which our money was lost. SAVED HIM FROM TORTURE. One Lynn man was recent ly “soaked" to the tune of $275, over fifty “short” lobsters having been found in his possession, and many other fines of from $10 upward have been assessed. A seafaring man who Is familiar with the entire coast and its lobster fishing and packing indus try from Cape Cod to New Foundiand, expressed the opinion that the lobster Is surely doomed. "If I had my way,” said he, “I would repeal all the short lobster laws and let the fishermen make a grand scramble for every lob ster in sight. They have got to go anyway, and you might as well get rid of them at once as to go through the farce of trying to keep people from catching them.”—Boston Globe. TIME TABLE. LOUP CITY, NEBR. WERMAN, OF BALTIMORE, SAYS: Baltimore, Md., March 30, 1001. Gtntltmen : — Being entirely cured of deafness, thanks to your treatment, I will now give you a full history of my case, to be used at your discretion. About five years ago uiv right ear began to sing, and this kept on getting worse, until I lost my hearing in this ear entirely. I underwent a treatment for catarrh, for three months, without any success, consulted a num ber of physicians, among others, the most eminent ear specialist of this city, who told me that only an operation could help me, and even that only temporarily, that the head noises would then cease, but the hearing in the affected ear would be lost forever. I then saw your advertisement accidentally in a New York paper, and ordered your treat ment. After I had used it only a few days according to your directions, the noises ceased, and to-day, after five weeks, my hearing in the diseased ear has been entirely restored. I thank you heartily and beg to remain Very truly yours. r. A. W1JRMAN, 730 S. Broadway, Baltimore, Md.
