Mr Throckmorton Incidentally remark
ed that It was altogether different from
that which he experienced In Neb
raska 45 years ago, when he, with his
parents located at Plattimouth on
January 2nd, 1857. He says that blind
ing snow storms and very deep snow
were characteristic features of that
winters experience from the middle of
December to late spring. Mr. Throck
morton has also experienced many
severe winters since then as he has, for
all these long years b^en a resident of
Nebraska, and of course he knows how
to appreciate such tine weather as we
are now privaleged to enjoy.
The Sherman County Fair Association
held their annual meeting last Monday
afternoon and among other things
the board of directors was authorized
to clean out and even up the north end
of the artifical lake, A committee was
appointed to look after the planting of
trees and another to look after and
secure the right of way for a ditch
from the old mill race to the lake on
the fair ground. The association has
over $200 00 on hand now, nearly ail
of which will be spent to improve and
beautify the grounds. The plan is to
fix up the lake as above mentioned also
to break out a strip of land on the west
and south side of the grounds and
seed it down to alfalfa and to make
other needed and substantial improve
ments. The following were elected
as officers for the ensuing year and will
constitute the board of directors:

Together Again,
One of the famous and popular ex
hibits in the British museum is the
unique Portland vase. About ten
inches high, made of glhss of a won
derfully deep blue, ornamented in re
lief with a series of figures of opaque
white glass, it was found in a marble
sarcophagus under the Monte del
Grano, some two and a half miles from
Rome on the way to Frascati. For a
long time it was the chief ornament
of the great Barberini palace at Rome,
but toward the end of the eighteenth
century it was bought by Sir William
Hamilton, who in turn sold it to the
Duchess cf Portland in 1786, and by the
then Duke of Portland it was deposited
in the British museum in 1810. The
museur^ did not then occupy its pres
ent building, and in 1845, while it was
still in Montague house, the vase was
broken by an act of vandalism. A
man named William Lloyd, who was
employed in me museum, got urunn
one day in February of that year, and,
picking up a Babylonian stone which
lay on the ground, he hurled it at the
vase, which was placed under a glass
case. There was a crash, and the case
and the vase fell shattered to the
ground. • The museum authorities ap
proached the Duke of Portland with a
view to prosecuting the man, but, for
reasons of his own. the duke refused to
appear, and the only thing the museum
could do was to bring the culprit be
fore a magistrate on a charge of wan
tonly breaking the glass case. The
magistrate fined him a couple of
pounds, and the fine was considerately
paid by an old lady with more sym
pathy than sense, so that the man got
off scot free. The pieces were put to
gether again, and perhaps the romance
which has thus clustered around the
vase may have enhanced its value. It
Is estimated to be worth no less than
