By January 1st the Rock Island ex
pects to be able to open for business its
southwestern extension to El Paso,
Tex. This line, in connection with the
Southern Pacific and the Mexican Cen
tral railroads, will give the Rock
Island the shortest line both to South
ern California and the City of Mexico,
nnd make it a dangerous competitor of
the Santa Fe. It took just one year to
construct the 546 miles of the new ex
tension from Liberal, Kan., to El Paso,
Tex. For the purpose of complying
with the Texas law that every railroad
within that state shall have state oper
ating headquarters and also for general
construction facilities and convenience,
the new road was placed under the
charters of five different railroad cor
porations, viz.: The Chicago, Rock
Island & Pacific proper, the Chicago,
Rock Island & Mexico, the Chicago,
Rock Island & El Paso, the Rock Island
& El Paso, and the El Paso & North
eastern. The road from Liberal to
Santa Rosa, N. M., a distance of 272
miles, was placed under direct Rock
Island construction, with J. H. Conlen,
vice president of the Chicago. Rock
Island & Mexico, as Chief Engineer
and General Manager, while from San
ta Rosa to Carrizozo, a distance of 130
miles, the construction work was given
to the El Paso & Northeastern, which
already had a constructed line from El
Paso to Carrizozo. The road from Lib
eral to Carrizozo will be equipped with
eighty-pound steel rails, oak or pitch
pine t'<?s, and modern ballasting. De
pot, side tracks, switches, Etation
houses, yardings, water tanks, and
Western Union telegraph lines have all
kept pace with actual road building,
and when the road Is opened by the
first of next year it will be in as perfect
condition as any of the lines of the
Rock Island system that have been in
service for years. In connection with
the Rock Island-El Paso line is the
new thirty-mile railroad which Is to
develop the immense Dawson coal
fields, owned by the Rock Island, on
the Beaubien and Miranda grant, in the
northern part of Colfax county, N. M.
This goad will leave the main Rock
Island rails at or near Liberal station,
twenty miles southwest of the Cana
dian river crossing, and run through
the New Mexican counties of San Mi
guel, Mora and Colfax. This branch
will be completed by May 16, 1902. The
coal Is to feed the southeastern por
tion of the Rock Island-El Paso line,
and probably will largely supply the
Southern Pacific railroad, In addition
to a heavy domestic custom In that
section of the country. The comple
tion of the El Paso line will give the
Rock Island a route of 222 miles short
er between Kansas City and El Paso
than that of the Santa Fe between the
same points, together with a saving
of fifteen hours of time, the latter fact
being largely due to the favorable
alignment and maximum 1 per cent
grade of the new Rock Island line. In
connection with the Southern Pacific,
the Rock Island will have a shorter
line from Chicago to Los Angeles than
will the Santa Fe. The construction
cost of the Rock Island-El Paso line
will approximate $7,000,000, an average
of about $16,000 per mile.—Chicago

Anna Catherine Draper, who died
at her home in Hastings, N. Y., on
Tuesday, m her 95th year, is said to
have been the first woman in the
world to have her photograph taken.
Her brother, Dr. John W. Draper, in
vented a process In which a daguerro
type could be made in six minutes.
Under previous methods it took an
hour and no one could pose that long.
Miss Draper’s picture was a success
r and it created great interest. The
original is now in the possession of
Lord Herschel’s heirs in England.

support. If both husband and wife
are to be wage-earners, or if the un
earned increment of Invested capital
accrues tc both, it will be difficult for
a woman to base a suit upon this
ground, except its object to be to secure
an arrangement for her participation
In her husband's resources, in which
case it is still to be hoped, the larger
burden of self-support will fall upon
the man, once the patron, now the
equal, of woman! The third and
fourth conditions, "gross neglect of
duty” and “extreme cruelty,” appeal
to the mind as pregnant phrases,
which allow large liberty to offenders
and require a nice sense of discrimina
tion in tne court. If other conditions
are maligned, these can never be—sus
ceptible as they are of Individual In
terpretation, sheltering alike vanity
and modesty. “Neglect of duty" is a
much more ethical cause than fhe of
fering of “indignities” that render life
“intolerable” or “burdensome,” as one
might he over-fastidious or too easily
bored. "Extreme cruelty” depends up
on that to which the victim has been
accustomed. But, however bad or mis
leading is any "omnibus clause,” it is
no worse in its moral effect than re
striction of divorce to a single cause.
BRIDGES ON WHEELS.
Primitive Structures to He Found in
Many Parts of Ireland.
At Peel, in the Isle of Man. there
exist bridge builders more remarkable
tfan Mr. Kipling ever dreamt or.
These lightning engineers create and
demolish a workable bridge every 24
hours. This bridge spans the end of
Peel harbor. As this is a haven for
many fishing smacks and small steam
ers, none but a costly and very lofty
arch would be practicable, and Peel is
not rolling in wealth. Further, an ex
pensive bridge would be a waste, as
it only leads to Peel Castle—a fortress
so weather-worn that no one resides
there or cares to go there except for
' sight-seeing. The thrifty Peel folk
surmounted the difficulty in a thor
oughly practical manner. Their bridge
is a simple wooden affair on wheels.
It is In sections, each section looking,
when off duty, like a costermonger's
harrow. When the tide ebbs the care
takers of the bridge wade in and place
section after section in the right po
sition. Sometimes they are helped by
excursionists in rowboats. The sec
tions have iron legs at eacli end. These
unfold and sink Into the mud. The
bridge is finished off with boards on
trestles at the termini. When visitors
come to see the ancient Peel Castle,
the bridge is well patronized. Each
person crossing it has to pay a half
penny. When the water begins to rise
again the bridge Is hastily pulled to
pieces and placed on one side till next
day. It appears to be a profitable ar
rangement, especially in summer, when
so many tourists visit the island, and
are anxious to investigate the beauties
of the castle at close quarters. Primi
tive bridges of a similar kind are to be
found in Ireland.
Electric Motor*.
The great objection to electric mo
tors—that they will not run far enough
without recharging—is said to be over
come. Recently in England a circuit
of 94 miles was run without recharg
ing. It was done with a battery of 42
four-plate cells, with a capacity of 180
ampere-hours. The carriage was a
four-wheel dogcart with two motors of
two and a half horse-power each. The
secret of the battery which enabled it
to make such a record was that in
going down grade the motors were re
versed, thus making dynamos for
charging the accumulators. In this
way the current was not only saved,
but a new current actually generated,
rendering the battery stronger at the
bottom of the grade than it was at the
top.

Fraud Properly Checked.
A lady appeared as a complainant
in a New York court the other day
against a young woman who had per
sistently accosted her on the streets,
asking for alms. It appeared for the
evidence of the young woman’s own
mother that her daughter had refused
to work, saying she could make money
easier by begging, and that she some
times got $3 or $4 in a day, which she
spent on dress and amusement gen
erally. The fraudulent character of
her occupation was further exempli
fied when, after the court had merci
fully let her off with a fine of only
$10, she coolly sent for her bank book
to pay it!
A Blacksmith'* Story.
Goodlaml, Kans., Dec. 23.—N. E. Al
bertson. a local blacksmith, had almost
decided to give up his shop altogether
