MAIN. ► It is an old adage that ‘drowning men will grasp at a straw, hence, the tempest in the tea pot over our work as assessor last year. It is claimed as a last resort that l assessed some parties to high, con sequently should not he recognized by them in this election. When we assumed the office of assessor we tooK our basis of values on reul property lrom that of our predecessor Mr. Angier for 1899, and found but few necessities for a change, but where I did find them I made the change according to my best judgment. We erred in two in stantes which was corrected as far as possible. 1 raised less than half dozen pieces of town property and one farm, a vacant one. The per sonal property I assessed from the basis as laid down at the assessors meeting and every man’s property was numerated just as they gave it in and swore to the schedule accord ing to law. The levy I had nothing to do with, therefore every persons assessment was just what they made it. I had but one occasion to ask a man to raise his personal schedule and he, recognizing the justness of the request, did so. When my books were reviewed by the board of supervisors, they were fouud to be withiD two per cent of tbeir basis and therefore oongratu luted myself on the work. The above facts are mentioned only because I expect to be placed fairly before the people. I am not on the defensive hut am proud of the re cord made and mean to maintaiu it. If I must cringe to a tax shirker for a vote I do not want it, neither will l stultify the principles of honor and justice for an office. ■Fiat justitia ruat coelum, Let justice be done though the heavens may fall' is our motto. There is no patrician cast for me. The poorest is my friend, the ritchest get justice, but unequal favors to none. This is our platform, upon it we stand or fall. I have no mud to sling neither will it be tolerated, and if any desire we will gladly take time to compare our work with that of others or investigate any griev ance. G. II. Gibson. There are a few voters in Sherman conn- | ty we fear, who claim to be populists, that j are not doing the right thin*. The vote this fall will show them up and then they can be counted in the right column—Times Inde pendent. The above clipping would indicate ! that editor Brown was just a bit shaky and while the republicans still continue to saw wood he intimates that the pops should keep pretty busy sweeping up the sawdust, and candidly, that is about all they will get out of this fall's campaign. He is getiiug on to the fact that several of the leaders of the populist party an not satisfied with their own par ty candidates and why should they t xpeet the honest voters to vote the pop ticket when they, themselves will not support it. Again there is iii-iity here-to fore populists who have I. cn especially pleased with the pr..««*nt and past five years sdminis ti'i iOD an! they u • longer conceal II, .. fact that all the promises which wc have made, have been fulfilled, while the Bryan prophecies have all , hwn proven to be falsi*, lienee it is no wonder the TimesIndependent is making a desperate appeal for its party vole. NOTES I KON! ONLOOKER. Ashtons streets were consider bly peopled last, Saturday, not an un usual occurance for our little berg and the weather icing the linest, everything seemed to be in holiday attire, and among those that were there for personal enjoyment and perhaps for business, were four can didates,—old wheel horses of toe parly that so effectually knocked the stufl'en ootof the 50 cent dollar in ’9(5, that the same has long since been classed as one of the many lost bogey8 of the demo pop-silver etc, etc., party. Of course I uui expect ed to inform your readers who the gentlemen were, and it is so seldom that one runs across a Hock of can didates on the same day, the same hour and at the same place, and ail engaged in the same particular bus iness. Of course the coteries of Ashton very cordially extended, and its general citizens took pleasure in shaking hands with, George Gibson our next county clerk, Frank Ot lewski, ditto treasurer, A. O. Hen drickson sheriff and E. C. Kirk supt., of schools. They are good jolly, all-around boys, just as are all tlie rest of the ticket, well qualified to handle the ollices if elected. While it is not expressly under stood that nominations of Republi can conventions of Slrrmau county are cquivelant to election, yet with all our failures to elect, it is my pleasure to note that Republican voters of Sherman county have not been discouraged and grown weak, but have met defeat only to gain strength, and with renewed fealty and stronger allegiance to the grand old party that has done so much for the Amerioau people, and has been so successful in driving hack, and keeping to the rear, dessolation and disaster. Just now I want to ecu grntulatc the Republicans of Sher man county for their peisistent ef torts and loyalty. To-day the Re publican organization of Sherman Bounty arc better, stronger and more (irmly united than ever before. It was this persistence and content plation of things past that redeemed the slate a year ago, and the elec lion day is close at hand when the same thing will lie done in Sbermao con uly. E. (J. 1'. U. No. Me. We wish to emphasize the fact that the republican nominee for county judge, A. J. B. Fairbairu is one of the best men in the county. Mr. Fairbairn made an excellent officer as county treasurer and we recommend him to the voters as a man of good judicial ability. Vote for Fairbairn. E. C'. Kirk is making a splendid canvass in his work for superintend ent. He is an educated gentleman and leaves a favorable impression with ihose he meets. lie will d<_ubtless be elected as he is widely known throughout the county, ami is second to none in point of education which is the chief qualification Deed ed to make a good superintendent. A good word for Frank Otlewski, the Republican nominee for county treasurer is the right thing, and so we take pleasure in giving him a hearty endorsement, and to recom mend him to the voters of Sherman county. Frank is a mat of sterling worth as a citizen, and if elected to the position to which his part} has called upon to fill will reflect credit to our people and insure a faithful descharge of the dutieaof that office. The senior editor has been told of a conversation which look place be. tween two pops in which one of them 9tated that 0. II. Gibson, republican nominee for clerk has already been favored with enough clerkships. That he is now clerk ol three different lodges and has the village clerkship. Well, what of it, there is’nt any of these positions that pays a salary to amount to a hill of beans, and lie is given these positions not because he seeks them but because the people recognize his ability for clerical work and so keep the right man in the right place.
