ago yesterday the American heait
was moved to great deeds and great
er enthusiasm when the bell on old
independence hall at Philadelphia,
announced that the declaration of
independence had been signed, and
the people inhabiting a strip of land
a few hundred miles wide extending
along the Atlantic coast had cut loose
from the mother country. The Fourth
of July 19o 1 sees the celebration of
tLe above event on territoty, all our
own, so vast that the sun never sets
upon it. Oh liberty thy banner will
encompass the earth regardless of

Whereas: Certaiu rumors are cur
rent in Valley and Sberman counties
iu regard to the killing of one Frank
Landa in Sherman county, in the
year 1894, which tend to connect
Frank Manchester and David Ing
raham with the commission of the
crime, and
Whereas: These rumors have been
traced back to their origin, and are
found to spring out of a conversation
bad between Mrs. Aleck Smith and
myself, and
Whereas: Mrs. Smith evidently
misunderstood what was said by me;
Therefore: In order to remove
any possible injury to the good name
of David Ingraham and Frank Man
chester, I wish to state that I have
no knowledge of any facts which
would in any manner tend to impli
cate either ot the above named per
sons in the commission of said crime;
and that such rumors are without
foundation and wholly imjust, and 1
hope that no one will give any cre
dence to them. And I desire that
this statement of mine may be given
the utmost publicity so as to remove
any cloud that may overshadow the
reputation or character of eitbei
David Ingraham or Frank Manches
ter, and cause pain to their relatives
and friends by reason of sucb un
just suspicions and aspersions as
the above rumors have a tendency to
create.

ion at the court bouse in Loup City, sitting as

per cent deducted. Loup City. 7 per cent de
ducted: Ashton 11 per cent deducted: Rock
ville, 5 per cent deducted: Clay. I* per cent
added; Moult, 1 1-3 per cent deducted; Bristol.

No additions or deductions were made on
ands in Harrison and Hazard township.
Board adjourned to
June 18. 1901.
All members of the board were present and
passed the day in matters of equalisation.
Tile board adjourned to
June 19, 1901, 9 o'clock a m.
The forenoon was passed in matters of
equalization and the afternoon in the traus
action of general businoss.
Before the board came Melvin Buttler of
Harrison township and requested that Sher
man county assist Harrison township in re
building a bridge, on motion $50 00 was do
nated from the county bridge fund for that
purpose, provided said bridge be 24 ft long.
16 ft wide, and twelve ft from the bottom of
the creek to the floor of the bridge.
The official bonds of Chav Lindall, Wm.
Mlnne, Chus. Landon, W. 11 Barnes, Arnold
Coon James Spragusberg. (J. W. Bramer.
Wenkei kostal and (.'has. Coulter, overseer of
highways, were approved, and the bonds of
J. N. Black, Edwin Munu and G. W. Bramer
as township offleors were also approved.
In the matter of the petition for the
establishment of a road commencing at the
south west corner of Section 23, T. 13, R. li
it was ordered that said road be established
provided Bristol township pays to Wm,
Meckesh damages in the sum of *10.90 as al
lowed by this board. John Long as at
torney for Meekish gave notice of appeal.
On motion the county treasurer is ordered
to caneel tax sale certificates on lots 13 to 16
inclusive, Slock 16, L. & K's add. to Loup
Citv.
On motion the clera Is ordered to strike from
the tax list of 1*99 the poll tax of N. J. Stott,
she not being liable therefor.
The reqeest of Wm. Meekish for a new
survey of the road as prayed for by Albert
Holub and others and this day established
was denied. John Long as-hte attorney ex
cepting.
In the matter of the road petitioned for by
Peter Anderson and others, the description
of which has this day been corrected
to commence at the north east quarter
of the north east qr. of Section 31. T. 14 R.
13. and connecting with road No 4. all of
the road to come off Section 6 for a distance
| of #6 rods south from the corner stake of
I said section, thence south all of the road to
oomeoff Section 5 to the termination of said
road: the board finds this road Is a
public necessity and therefore ordors sume
established provided Rockville township
pays to L'nker Hansen the sum of $10.00 and
Louie Hansen the sum of #25.00 as allowed by
this board in payment for damages sustained
by them by reason of the establishment of
said road
On motion the petition for a bridge across
the Middle Loup river at Austin as prayed
for by E. S Ogle and others was laid on
the table lndeflnately
On motion the County Judge was ordered to
purchase a copy of a treatise on guardian
ship for the use of his office and file his claim
for same.
Whereupon the board adjourned to
