George Pfluger, a convict who was up for wife murder fiuin Cmu ruing county, deliberately walked into the sell bouse and laid down in a cell, pillowing bis bead on bis arms was smothered to death, durinii the penitentiary lire last week. The deeiease in the public debt for February was more than seven million dollars which would meau iu a year at the same rate about eighty four million. At this rate we will have caught up with the democratic deficiencies of the Cleveland adtnin stratiou i.1 ab >ut three yearn Our Minister Conger, who so heroically passed through the long siege at Pekin will be given a six months rest and another man put in bis place at least for that period. It is intimated that Mr. Conger is not quite equal to that complicated post at present, hence his leave of absence. The market reports in The 'l'wen tieth Century Farmer are always full and complete and corrected up to the time of going to press. This is one of the features of the new paper, issued by The Bee Publishing Company, Omaha, that nukes i1 worthy of attention. Arrange ments have been made whereby we cm send you the Twentieth Century Farmer for three months free. Call at this ollice aDd get particulars. The report comes from Whitman Neb. that a most distructive prairie fire swept over a large part of the grazing fields in Cherry county, it burned a strip 15 miles wide and 75 miles long. The damage done to range, hay and stock will reach #30, Xi00 Many small ranches wereentire |y burned out, together with a great jnany catile. The fire raged for hours with a heavy wind from the west, sweeping everything before i*. It leaped the Loup river in sev eral places and at last report it was still going east beyond control. Since the major part ot our peni tentiary has been destroyed by fire Governor Dietrichs advocates buy ing from two to four sections of land some place and rebuilding up on it, thereby providing room for the convicts to earn something for the state by farming. The con tract system has always been i vicious one and is not justice to either convict or slate, therefore should be improved upon. The governor’s head is level aud his suggestions should be well consid d :red. At noon last Monday expired ihe term of John M. Thurston in the United States senate and it is but justice to say that but few states ever furnished a representative in the upper branch of congress who was a more promising leader at the beginning of bis term, and who so thoroughly disappointed the ex pectations of his friends and con stituants as has Mr. Thurston. His ability was acknowledged by all and his popularity extended fur out side bis own state. Lie was con ceded to be a possible candidate for president, and bis appearance upon the rostrum was always a signal for er thiii.iastic demonstrations. ' The republican party of Nebraska prided itself upon the fact of having turn ished to the senate one of its most brilliant members. Our high ex pectations were shivered, and in stead of being a light to our feet, he has been a dead weight that pulled the party down at every turn. Our brilliaut leader, our loved John drops his toga unbonored and unsung. The ree f of his wreck could have easily been avoided but be chose the channel which led to political oblivian and at noon, March 4th, he reached his Waterloo.
