John Shoening and Claus Kggers went to Grand Island Monday to spend Christmas. Will Holcomb came dow n from Val ley county and spent Christmas with his parents. Mrs. A. P. Culley and two little daugh ters spent Christmas with their rela tives at York. Miss Ada Minsbul. left over the U. I’. Monday morning to spend Christinas with friends. Young America will enjoy a two weeks vacation from their studies dur ing the holidays. J. T. Hale has purchased a new set of harness and a buggy for Master Ell banks to tit hissbetlands. Money saved is money earn ed by baying a feed grinder of T. M. Reed. Mrs Lyman, and daughter of Mr and Mrs. J. M. Pilger, who has been for several weeks past in Burlington at the bed side of his sick brother returned botae Friday. He reports his brother but little improved. G. II. M- Reeu sells sewing ma chines and a general line of furniture Oril dispatches report one ineasly case of very mild smallpox in that town. If they want a strong, vigorous case they might get it by applying to St. Paul. Henry Dolling will continue his shoe sale at 15 per cent discount until January 12. A package which came to this post office Tuesday, for Miss Sadie Burrow es and was supposed to have contained a Christmas present, had its contents extracted before it reached here. There was a big crowd in town Saturday and Monday and a large amount of Christinas shopping was going on. One merchant in town re ports his sales on Saturday over 8203. Ob the afternoon of the 24, Miss Frankie Inks, teacher In Dist. No. 59, had a chrlstman tree for her school and an enjoyable time is reported. Her schollars presented her with a beautiful album W. I>. French. W G. McNulty and H. •T- Cole are engaged In hauling that monument of folly, the McAlpine bridge to Sweetwater, where the county fath ers hope it will he of more use than where it was built. Another accidental shooting is re ported from the south part of the coun ty below Kockyilie, in which a 14 year old bov had the top of his bead blown off, killing him instantly. The name of the boy we could not learn nor the particulars of the shooting, We seem to be encircled by a chain of smallpox. Kvery town around us on the south, east and west is reported to have them and also Oril on the nortl, Coup City has so far escaped this loth some disease and the Village fathers have taken rigid steps to quarintine against its introduction. Word came to town the other day to lbe effect that Willie Betts, a young man living 5 miles down the valley, had been quite badly hurt by the ex plosion of an old musket which he was hunting with. The particulars were not fully set forth but H is said that a piece of the gnu struck him just below the knee penetrating the leg and lodg ing b“tween the bones, also one piece struck him in the arm. He was badly hurt. T. M. Reed buys Game. J H Travis returned from Omaha last Saturday \V. T. Chase kept an open box of cigars for his customers Christmas day. Hats. Boots and Shoes and Hoisery cheap at 1’ilgers. Joseph McCoy and family eat tur key with Mr. and Mrs. O. H Gibson Christmas. Charles Rowe broke through the ice while skating Christmas day and quite seyerel hurt his leg. Mr. and Mrs. L Hansen spent Christ mas day with Mrs. Hansens brother and family at Arcadia. II. E. Brewer came up from Central City last Saturday to spend the holidays with his family. As tbe days begin to lengthen the cold begins to strengthen, and the coal dealers sing “Praise God from whom all Blessings How.” Loup City has caught most every thing going except the seven year itch and the small pox. Our sister towns have a horse on us this time. Jas. Johansen, grain buyer for A. Shaupp reports that within three days of last week, lie bought five car loads of corn on the MeAlpine market. Two children of Mr. and Mrs. Wiley Hudson of Archer,came up Monday to spend tbe holidays with their grand parents, Mr and Mrs. Sami. Hancock. E. Holcomb and Chris Johansen have developed an inordinate case of Oklaho ma fever and are preparing to depart for that sunny clime in the near future. The people of Austin, bad an enter tainment and Christmas tree at their school house Monday evening. A met ry time is reported by those who were present. Our former townsman Jessie Rent frow, who now lives in St. Paul, we are informed has been quarintined as two of bis girls have smallpox, and-they won't let Jess go down town. "And the blow almost killed father." We learn through the Omaha Bee that our old friend J. L. Hopper has been appointed post master at Butler, In Buffalo county. John is the right man for the place and the people of that berg have made a wise choice. Our Representative and County At torney will again take their oath of office next w’eek for their second term. The other boys will serve the "dear people" another year and according to tradi ion, will then go making fence. Miss Esther McDonald was taken with a severe attack of heart trouble Wednesday forenoon and for a time was in a critical condition. The trouble was brought on by her close attention at the bedside of her sick mother dur ing the pas’t month. Ye junior scribe made a dying trip to Rockville Monday and while there had the pleasure of shaking hands with many old friends The merchants of that berg was enjoying a good Christ mas trade and all wore a 7x9 smile. We were informed that quite a number of people in that vicinity were contem plating going to Oklahoma in the spring, among them are Mr. A, J B. Fairbairn and son Charles. Robert, the yonng son of Mr. and Mrs. A. Zink suffered another quite severe accident last Thursday afternoon. The little fellow, by some means, fell upon a butcher knife, the blade striking him on the side of the nose, about the center, slitting it to the end mid through to the nostril. Dr, Main was called and dressed the wound. Little Rob has had an unlucky course dur ing the past few years, as he lias had a number of severe accidents. Wednesday evening a crowd of Wood men and Odd Fellows and tbeir wivts surprised Mr. and Mrs Joseph McCoy by presenting themselves at their door with baskets tilled with delicacies and a staunch determination to sp<nd tiie evening with that worthy couple. The host and hostess were equal to the oc casion and invited their guests to a seat iu their spacious parlor. The evening was spent tn games and pleasantries, a lap supper was seived about midnight after which a beautiful tea ret of Bohemian glass finished in sliver was presented to Mr. and Mrs McCoy as a remembrance for them of their many friends in this vicinity w hen they are in their southern home. I DIED Darius Reynolds, an old and wide ly known former citizen of tliisi county departed this life on Decem ber 2t», 1900 at toe borne of bis daughter, Mrs. A. L Conhiser, at Sargent, Neb. His death was sud uen and was caused by laking Wood alcohol. At about 11 o’elocK on the morn ing of the 2tith lost, his son, S. F. Reynolds received a telegram informing him of the sudden sick ness of his father and took the noon train to go at once. He arrived to late, however, to see his father alive. The following Thursday morning his remains were broutht to Loup City and will be laid to rest beside bis wife who died here and was buried in the Sunny Slope cemetery, west of town, some eighteen years ago. Mr. Reynolds was born in New York State, May 5th, 1824 and was 7ti years. 7 months, and 22 days old. lie came to Loup City in 187:5 and was among the oldest settlers, and was ODe of the first to take up a homestead in Sherman county. There was a large crowd at the train, to pay their respects to the departed. The funeral and burial will take place this morning at 10 o'clock. The bereaved relatives have the sympathy of all. Mr. L.C'lilpps and Miss Jennie Wait zewski,all of Oak Creek township, this county, were married at the home of Andrew Raker, on Christmas day Dee. 25, 1900, county Judge Angier ortieiat Ir.g. -—--^ - The city schools closed for the Holi days last Friday afternoon and will give a two weeks vacation. Appropriate exercises were given in the primary de partments and (juite a visiting attend ance was present. These departments are beiug taught by Miss. Lulu Bower and Miss. Henry Young w ho arranged to have a Christmas Tree and program, both schools going together and partici pating in the exercises The little folks done very well In reciting their respective patts and the visitors found much pleasure in listening to the resi tations. At the close of the exercises Santa Claus made his appearance and the distribution of presents commenced The first present given was for “Little Col. Young" which was followed by a general distribution of gift's among the other little folks. The teacher present ed each pupil w ith a beautiful merit card and pop corn balls, apples, candy and peanuts were distributed by the bushel. The scholars had bought an easy chair for the Janitor, Col. Young. Mr. Young always remembers the little folks and in return the little folks always remem ber him. The other rooms which are being taught by I’rof. Mead, and Prof. Nicaon and Miss. Minnie Hickman only indulged in their usual- lesson exercises, but each of the teaches received a hand some present from their pupils. The day closed with happy thoughts from teachers, pupils and patrons.
