have been reserved by Secretary of
State Porter for seven senators and
fwenty-five representatives. As many
moie applications are awaiting con
st deration and they will be taken up
in the order in which they were re
ceived. In the senate chamber desks
have been reserved for Liddell and
Ransom of Douglas in the second row
of one of the center sections. In the
same row, desks have been reserved
for Lyman of Adams and Young of
Harlan

LINCOLN, Nov. 20.—Duplicates of
official returns received at the secre
tary of state's office from every coun
ty in the state show that Charles A.
Dietrich was elect d governor by a
plurality of 8til votes. The Douglas
county abstract of election was
brought to Lincoln this afternoon by
!H. M. Waring, I). M. Haverly and E.
f}. Solomon and wan left at the secre
tary’s office at 0 o'clock, completing
»he list of ninety counties. If the fig
ures contained in the duplicate re

A.aska reporting the accidental
drowning there of Mr. and Mrs. Tay
lor and an Indian girl wnora Mrs.
Taylor had long had with her. Mrs.
Taylor was the daughter of Mr. and
Mrs. Cl. \V. Baker of Table Rock and
lived here many years.

WEST POINT, Neb., Nov. 20—A
daily free rural delivery route, the
first to be established In this county, 1
has been put in operation. The route
is twenty-eight miles in length and
extends from this city to the village
of Monterey, thence northwest to
Aloys and returns to West Point, em
bracing a large and very populous sec
tion of the county. Farmers along
the route arc very appreciative of the
benefits to be gained by the establish
ment of this route. Pettilons have
been forwarded to Washington for the
founding of two additional routes.

HASTINGS, Nob., Nov. 20.—Gov
ernor-Elect Dietrich has offered Har
ry llaverly the stewardship of the
Hastings asylum and Mr. llaverly has
accepted. Mr. llaverly lias resided in
Hastings for fifteen years, during
which lime Ik* has held several re
sponsible positions, in which he al
ways acquitted himself with credit.
Mr. Dietrich shvs that he is in no
hurry to make appointments, as ho
considers that one of his gravest du
ties and at all events he is verv anx
ious to put the right man in the right
place.

Union Stock Yurds. Cattle -There was
a good liberal ran of cattle here today,
and as both yard traders and puckers
were not particularly anxious for sup
plies the market was slow and wak all
around. There were quite a few fat cat
tle, included In the recrlpts. and a num
ber of bunches of pretty good stuff. Buy
ers, however, did not take hold with,
much life and claimed that prices hero
were too high In comparison with east
ern markets. Sellers were not willing
to make any concessions, and as a result
the market was dull with the tendency of
prices lower. As compared with the
close of last week it is safe to say that
the market Is all of ItWfJSc lower, the
greatest decline being on llie commoner
grades. There was very little life to the
stocker and feeder trade except on the
best heavyweight feeders, which huvo
sold In good shape all the week, and pric
es on that class of stuff Is very little low
er than It was at the clase of last week
Common kinds, however, and anything
at all light or on the calf order ate very
slow sale, and probably around a quar
ter lower for the week. There were quite
a few western beef steers on sale this
morning, and the better grades sold just
about steady, but the common kinds did
not bring quite as good prices.
Ilogs—There was another liberal run of
hogs, but in spite of that fact the mar
ket opened up strong to 5c higher in
some cases. l,ight hogs were in the best
demand and on the early market sold
largely at Mat and as high as |LS2's and
Sl.s", was paid for a numla-r of loads. The
heavier hogs sold around 11,77';, Buyers
did not seem to want the heavy packers
today, and sellers found it difficult to get
a bid on them at the start. After the
first few rounds the market did not seem
lo be quite as strong and tin $4.77'i sales
were more numerous.
Sheep chore were a fey. cars of sluep
here today and what few were offered
were rather on the common order and
largely feeders, Hookers all seemed to hi.
anxious for good stuff and h night of
both the sheep and lambs offered today at
just about steady prices, though they
were far from choice. Feeders were also
in good demand today and tile few on the
market were bought tip at light around
steady prices, no material change from
yesterday being noticeable.

Manila Pupcrw Give Keaton for Crediting
Reports.
WASHINGTON, Nov. 24.-The latost
mail from Manila received at the War
department brings an interesting bud
get of news from the islands, some
of which heretofore has been touched
on in press dispatches. The Manila
papers of October 18 devote consider
able space to a report concerning Ag
ninaldo's death in northern Luzon.
They say that the circumstantial char
acter of this report, together with «in
fact that General Trias recently had
been signing himself "eommander-iu
chief of the insurgent forces,” lends
color to the belief that Agulnaldo may
be dead.
The latest account in this line comes
from Nueva Ecija in northern Luzon,
where, in an outpost skirmish. Aguin
aido’s horse was killed and his saddle
hags, with a number of persona! pa
pers, were captured.
Strong a Heir Admiral.
WASHINGTON, Nov. 24.—Captain
Edward T. Strong was today placed on
the retired list of the navy with the
rank of rear admiral. Captain Strong
was recently i.i command of the mon
itor Monadncck on the Asiatic station,
and his health broke down while on
that duty. He is a native of Massachu
setts and entered the navy as a vol
unteer officer at the outbreak of the
war of the rebellion. He reached the
grade of captain in October, 1839. His
retirement in the grade of rear ad
miral is in pursuance of the terms of
the personnel law.
Cold Comfort for Iv#*r.
BERLIN. Nov. 24.—In the Reichstag
today, replying to a question regarding
the expulsion of Germans from the
Transvaal, Baron von Richtofen, sec
retary tor foreign affairs, declared in
ternational law justified the British au
thorities in removing from the seat
of war undesirable persons. But Ger
many, lie added, had energetically in
tervened in favor of those expelled
without cause, or expelled with unnec
essary harshness. Germany had also
formulated demands for compensation.
Ready for the North Pole.
CHRISTIANA, Nov. 23. The Duke
of Abbruzzi, the Antic explorer, and
Captain Tobellio, his aide de camp,
arrived here a few days ago and pro
ceeded to Larrvik where the explor
ing steamer Stella Polario, with an
Italian crew lies ready to leave next
week. The duke conferred with *'n bis
country, nor the recent affair in
who, with two Italians, was lost dur
ing the recent expedition, regarding a
search expedition to ba sent from
France Joseph land.

was announced at the War department
today that Webb C. Hayes, son of ex
President Hayes and late lieutenant
colonel United States volunteers, hav
ing reported in person at the head
quarters of the China relief expedi
tion. Pekin, September 8, was appoint
ed a volunteer aid-de-camp on the
staff of Major General Chaffee com
manding the relief expedition.

PARIS, Nov. 24.—The Temps today
prints a special dispatch from Rome
saying the p'-pe has. renounced the idea
of creating cardinals at a consistory
to be held before Christmas. The an
nouncements. it was added, will be
