A house and barn belonging to Mrs.
George Brown, of Arcadia, and who is
now runniog a boarding bouse at Cen
tral City, was burned to the ground on
last Sunday night. The origin of the
tire is a mystery but some Arcadiaites

While Mr. M. II. Smith was passing
through the yard of W G. Odendabl
last Friday he had to pass near the ken
nel where Mr. Odendahl's bird Jog was
chained. As he approached near
enough the dog sprang upon him, lacer
ating his arm making a painful wound
in the fore arm, and refusing to let go
until Mrs. C. J Odendabl came to his
assistance and w hen the brute was forc
ed to relenquUh his hold on the arm he
made a vicious attempt to grab Mr.
Smiths leg auJ although not doing
much damage to the limb tore the pants
in shreds.

At I 00 o’clock p. ra. of Saturday July
14, 1900., Bt his hoarding house in Cen
tral City, Nebraska J. F. Simpson de
parted this life. At 13 m, a telegram
was received here asking that his two
children be sent to him at once as he
was very sick and in a very short time a
second one was received announcing
his death, The intelligence was a great
shock to this community. Frank, as
we all called him, was a general favor
ite in this place, a kind word and a
smile was his characteristic, his kind
heart always throbbing for the worthy
poor and bis purse was in his hand when
gaunt necessity was abroad. He came
to Loup City early in '79 and made this
his borne for long years. He went from
here to Pennsylvania and married the
girl of his choice some 15 years ago, re
turning with her they settled down to
housekeeping. Two children, Willie
now about 14 and Anna past 13, were
born to them Th -y afterward moved
back to Penna., returning again to Dan
ville, 111., where Mrs. Simpson died a
few years ago, after which he brought
the two children back to Loup City,
saying that our people were the best he
had ever met and he desired to raise

ed hurried to Central City upon the
receipt ot the telegram and had the body
prepared and shipped here where upon
its arrival it was taken in charge by
tho Masons and K P's and on Tuesday

in Evergreen cemetery. It«v. W. E.
Matthews preached a very appropriate
and touching sermon from the 13, chapt.

A CENSUS ENUMERATOR'S
EXPERIENCE
To Tna Northwestern:—A continuous ride
of 22 days, a visit to every home and farm, u
word, u shake and a nod to every man, woman
and child in Rockville Township Is the only
way I cun Intellgcntlv express the pleasures
and possibilities of a census enumerator, and
thinking your readers would accept a few
thoughts treasured while swinging round the
township, I herewith Jot them down. I want
to thank all for the kind and cordial rescep
tlon accorded me, for their interest In my work
and appreciate their help to me In completing
ihe census of Rockville township.
Ten years has elapsed since t uklng the elev
enth census, many chungci have tuken place
In that short time. Ten years ago seven-tenths
of the people of Rockville township lived in
dug-outs and sod houses, but few frames were
found and orchards and groves were few and
far betwc n. roads meandered and serpentined
here and there as the convenience of the far
mer and traveler would dictate. To day In
place of dug-outs, sods and holes for bouses u
large percent of them have built good substan
tial frame houses of brick and lumber. They
have come up out of the sloughs an 1 draws and
placed this building on cites well elevated and
beautiful groves orchards sad lawns surround
many of them Roads are on sectlou lines and
about V of the township is under fence Those
that are yet in their sn.l houses are encouraged
and a few good crops at present prices will en
able them to Improve their farms and homes.
The most notable feature of thrift aid prosper
ity are the many large and comfortable hums
well painted und some of them supplied
by pipe line. 1 would like to write up 50 of the
best Improved farms in the township but time
and spare will not permit. The per cent of the
several nalionalltlee of Rockville township
can be expressed as follows: About four-tenth
Polish, three-tenth Danes and Swedes, the
balance Germans und Americans about equal
ly divided. I found one Dap one Fin und one
Norwegian. Our Polish citizens to a unit are
good substantial farmers: are more inclined to
accumulating property than to beautifying
their homes, although many have tine farms
and brick dwellings with handsome surround
ings, they are lovers of good horses and most
of them have them. The Danes and Swccdes
are bard workers, model farmers, frugal livers
generoup and hospitable to a fault; are lovers
of good horses fine large and commodious barns
and line homes. They take pride in surround
ing their homes with trees, flowers and shrub
ry are friends of edueutlon and the schools.
Of the German I need say but little They have
surely and steadily gained and made a reputa
tion as farmers, merchants and all other voca
tions decreed to man to master that they and
the American people can well he proud of. and
I can only add that they are holding their
own in Rockville township As I passed from
farm to farm I was pleased to note with few
exceptions, clean and neat houses, a kind and
hospitable feeling toward strangers, egar to
talk about their condition, their prospects and
their future possibilities. Every hotly seemed
to have plenty to eat and wear, heard no cala
mity howls about hard times and no money.
All seemed cheerful of the low priced Imports
and the high priced products of the farm.
My official duties restrained me from Inter
viewing these people politically, but I could
not but understand that a change bark to
Cleveland. Kelly a»d Coxey s fond old Demo
cratic days would not tie welcomed, and if
straws show which way the wind blows. I am
constrained to conclude that force of habit
and a heavy laying on of the party lash com
pels them to vote for Hryan. Hut the twinkle
of their eye denotes that their ernest and heart
felt prayer Is No Change, Oh Lord Ne Change.
