WAS SAVED BY BARB WIRE. [Suspended by one foot over a preci pice 150 feet high, with nearly all the blood in h!s body congested in bis head, James Johnson, a negro. *4 years old. hung throughout a cold and [ciocmy night from a cliff near St. bools, below which rushes the tawny Mississippi. The special Providence which is said to watch over drunken men saw to it .that when Johnson stumbled upon the verge of the bank hie toot should catch in a chance loop of a barbed wire fence. The obstruc tion had been placed there years ago to prevent such as he from plunging to “Guess it mas your own foot as much a rabbit’s foot,” remarked the doc tor. Cvtea Student la MI»«onrl Among the students who have re cently entered the University of Mis souri is Senor Rubio Lopez of Cuba. During the late Cuban war he had a lively military experience. He served some months as a sergeant and two years as a second lieutenant on the 6taff of Gen. Gomez. While on that general’s staff he was intrusted with several important missions, one of destruction. The fence posts were. old. and some of them rotten. Though Johnson twitched and jerked to loose himself, freedom would have been the freedom of death, and the wire and the post next to his foot held securely. „ It was agonizing to hang there, but it was not death. Still, flesh and blood could not have held out much longer, and discovery and the difficult rescue came not a minute too soon. Below the cliff were quarries, skirted on the outer edge by the Iron Moun tain Railroad. Beyond the tracks rushes the swollen Mississippi. John son, who can remember little of how he got into his plight, had been out in the country a day or two before, looking for work. Not finding it, he used up his small store of money in rum, and then started to walk back to the city. He had been sick and early In the evening he lay down in the rain upon a pile of boards near a house that stands on the top of the bluff. Finally he got up, and lurched along, uncon scious of the yawning chasm only a few rods away. Suddenly his foot caught in a barbed wire that ran closo ^ to the ground, and he was fiung head long. It happened to be a loop that tripped him, and he fell over the edge; the wire twisted his body around so / that his back was against the cliff. The wire tightened about his ankle i and then sagged. The shock of the j fall sobered him partly, and he twisted and turned to get loose. His finger tips could just touch a ledge of rock, but he could grasp nothing, though he coaid relieve the weight of his body somewhat. He could net see in the murky night, but below he could hear the swishing of the river. The granite cutters in the quarry come to work at 8 o’clock in the morn ing. and a little before that hour Her man Spieekerman, the first of the force, entered the quarry and went to a shed to put on his working clothes. He happened to look up. and could hardly believe his eyes when he saw a man hanging neaa down rrom me face of the cliff away above. He ran to the office of the boss and breathless ly told the men there what he had seen. They telephoned to the fire de ^ partment for a hook and ladder truck and to a hospital for an ambulance. In the meantime a gang of workmen hur ried to the spot and stretched a tar paulin under the swinging form, so that if the man should drop he might not be dashed to death on the jagged rocks. Other men bounded up a road that led to the top of the cliff. Lying face down on the edge and peering over they could see the swaying body, , held in the loop of wire. None of them dared try to pull up the man by the wire, for fear that it would slip off the foot. In the meantime the fire men and the ambulance had come into the quarry, and with them a crowd of men from the city. Advice was plenty, J \ but deeds were few. The firemen took out their longest ladder and carried it from ledge to ledge up the cliff until the top round was within reach of Johnson. He gripped It with des peration, though his blood-swollen hands had little life in them. A fire man mounting the ladder fastened to the negro's legs a rope that had been lowered from the top of the cliff, and ' slowly and carefully Johnson was j pulled up. i The head was distorted to abnormal size by the tremendous pressure of blood; the pupils of the eyes were dis tended and flecked with angry, red spots; the lips were puffed to unusual proportions and the cords of the neck were knotted and hardened. The arms and hands were swollen to grotesque hugeness. The lungs were contracted 60 that not a word came from the parched throat The vital organs and lower limbs were cold with the creep ing death dew. The man was chafed by rough hauds, but the reactionary movement of the blood current was so swift after the body was placed in a normal position that this remedy was unnecessary. It surged from the flooded head back into the lower extremities, and, released from the thrall of suffocation, the man gasped. “James Johnson" to those who asked his name. He was rushed to the ambulance, which had been driven up the road from the quarry, and at the hospital it was found that he had only strained tendons of the foot and leg and lacer ated flesh where the barb of the wire caught. ^ler the cheering influence of cer tainaad sundry drinks which the doc tors gave to him Johnson got jovial over his miraculous escape. “I had my rabbit’s foot wld me; gusss dat’s why I didn’t get hurt no wuss.” he said. which was to enter a city in the pos session of the Spanish and make a plan of the place. Another was to make a topographical may of one of the Spanish positions while under fire. Near the close of the war he was pro moted to a first lieutenancy. He has had several personal encounters with the machette, and was wounded In two places. He has taken a bach elor’s degree In the University of Ha vana, and intends to take the degree of mechanical engineer at the Uni versity of Missouri. Besides the Cuban, there is a Puerto Rican and a Mexican attending the university. Work on Mining Claims. The provisions of the United States Revised Statutes requiring a certain amount of work to be performed or improvements made during each year on each mining claim located after May 10, 1872, and until a patent Issue therefor apply as well to that class of claims known as placer claims as to the class known as lode er vein claims. The law provides that “the period within which the work required to be done annually on all unpatented claims shall commence on the 1st day of January succeeding the date of lo cation of such claim.” Skott tad JTotfc The story of these gentlemen and their duel—a famous one formerly—is revived, and the tale is thus repeated: A due! was lately fought In Ttxas by Alexander Shott and John S. Lins Above • Drinking Sbop In Plainly Fashioned Rooms. Max Nordau lives in Paris above a drinking shop. It appears that the name “Nordau” was originally used by its owner as a pseudonym to news paper contributions. With the con sent of his father. Herr Sudfeld, a well-known Pesth Hebraist, he legally assumed it, transforming himself from “South Field” (Sudfield) into "North Meadow” (Nordau), says Literary Life. Except when he is visiting his patients. Dr. Nardau spends all his time In his study. This room is plainly furnished. A bookcase is one of its conspicuous features. Among the books are many presentation copies of Lombroso’s works. With this author and scientist Dr. Nordau keeps up a constant corre spondence and prides himself on be ing one of the very few men in Europe who can dicipher the professor’s hand writing. which appears to most people entirely illegible. Leading out of this room is Nordau’s barely furnished bed room, the camp bedstead of which may be seen through the open door. A small trapeze hanging through the doorway would seem to indicate that he has faith in "parlor gymnastics.” It is in this room that all books since the publication of “Degeneration” have been written, and where he is at pres ent writing a novel. CHINESE BIRD LAW. Tbe Authorities Prohibit the Exporta tion of Pheasant Skins. Minister Conger writes from Peking that upon a petition of the Society for the Protection of Game in China, sent through the consular body in Shang hai, the diplomatic corps last Septem ber unanimously requested the tsung ly-yamen, as a temporary measure, to prohibit the exportation of pheasant skins, says the Washington Star. This was done because a great demand had recently sprung up in European mar kets for their plumage, which increased the price there inordinately, and the birds were consequently being so ruth lessly slaughtered that, if it were not in some way stopped, the pheasants would very soon have been entirely ex terminated. The tsung-li-yamen grant ed the request, and the necessary or ders to the customs officials have been issued. This is understood to be only a temporary expedient, which may serve until there can be prescribed and enforced some rules and regulations in regard to close and hunting seasons, which will otherwise avert the exter mination of these beautiful birds, which are very valuable to the Chinese and the foreigners living in China, but of no great Importance elsewhere. Th« Conn try Editor. The country editor now dictates his editorials and employs a bright young man to write local news. His paper is printed on an improved press, the power is furnished by a gas engine or electric motor, and the paper is folded by machinery. He owns his own home, keeps his own horse and carriage, and has credit at the bank. A pleasure trip of a month is likely to be offered at any time, and he takes it gladly, while the young woman who keeps the books and the bright young man who writes local news keep the paper In a straight line.—Success. ART IN PICTURE HANGING. Tklaabt* Snifwtlou as to Background. Light and Grouping. Today no one hangs pictures In pairs. The time when regularity of arrangement was considered the acme of elegance haa vanished, and In Its place has come a wild struggle after the unexpected by those whose one idea of artistic effect is to have noth ing match anything else, says Har per’s Bazar. The weird result their efforts produce Is due to their^ failure to appreciate the fact that harmony, at least, must rule, even although uni formity has to be discarded. There must be a scheme to which the general tone of the pictures must conform. A dark carbon must not hang close to an etching drawn in delicate lines and bordered by a broad white mat. If water colors, with their soft tints, el bow oil paintings, with their bolder tones, the former will be faded, the lat ter coarsened. Let it be grasped. In the first place, that certain things may go together, while others must be barred from association. Etchings photographs, drawings, some engrav ings. water colors, pastels, may be as sembled on friendly terms. Even then, however, there must be Judgment ex ercised in the way they are placed. Contrary to the natural inclination dark, heavy shaded pictures should not always hang in the strongest light, but should iu some cases seek a sheltered position, away from the glare of the windows. Near the light may hang the pictures in fainter tints, the sub dued water colors, the line engravings, whose best points need illumination. This order may sometimes be reversed when the corner farthest from the win dow shows a decided need of brighten ing by light pictures, but always the gradation of tints should be borne In mind. Just as in a well-planned room the darkest color is found in the car pet and melts from that through the shades of the curtains and furniture to the lightest nuance in the wall, so the lower pictures should be more somber in hue than the upper and should lead the eye unconsciously from the deepest tone to the highest light. DESERT LANDS RECLAIMED. Thousand* of Acre* la tha Vat Mad* Productive by Irrigation. Of recent years the vast desert plains of the west that were supposed to be worthless have been made to produce abundant crops and the finest products by means of Irrigation. This method of reclaiming desert lands has been been put into practice quietly, but to the extent that today Irrigation has re deemed hundreds of thousands of acres of land in the states of Colorado, Ida ho, Montana. Utah. Wyoming and Cal ifornia. In Idaho alone over 500 farm ers water their lands by means of ir rigation ditches—little streams of wa ter that cut the farms up Into little strips surrounded by water. Some of the canals from which these small wa ter ditches run are over fifty miles long. The water that flows down from the mountain regions in the spring is preserved in huge reservoirs and given to the thirsty land in small quantities during the summer. By this means the land can always be kept moistened and there is no fear that the crops will dry up through drought, though there are long dry seasons when rain does not fall for weeks at a time. PROFESSIONAL APPLAUDERS. Excellent Job from • Financial Fo'nt of View. The position of some of the “chefs de claque" at large Paris theaters is a very enviable one from a financial point of view, says the Wide World. They are capitalists and speculators. Before the minister of fine arts, a few years ago, made the claque at the opera a state institution, they them selves did the very same thing, and I have known 9-franc tickets sold at a little office in the Rue Auber by the former "chef de claque” of the opera for as much as 20 francs each. But when an opera was a great success and tickets were in demand, he nat urally made people pay dearly for them. Supposing a play to be a great success, then he quickly becomes a rich man, and there are many cases on record of “chefs de claque” who have died worth hundreds of thousands of francs. Auguste and Porcher of the opera both died immensely rich. The former was rich enough before he be came “chef de claque” at the opera to pay 80,000 francs (116,000) for his po sition. Besides the profit he made on tickets, he received handsome presents from actors and actresses. Coal Found tn Quebec. Felix S. S. Johnson, United States commercial agent at Stanbridge, Que bec, writes that a mineral discovery which may lead to important results has been made in the Laurentian mountains. This is the unearthing of a seam of coal on the land of the Shawinigan Water and Power com pany. In appearance the coal h&3 all the properties of the anthracite, the difference being that it has more pol ish and is far more brittle. Experts who have seen the specimens pro nounce it not unlike some of the Nova Scotia product The surrounding for mation is, of course, entirely different from that in the anthracite regions of Pennsylvania. The shale and slate which surround the coal measures of the Keystone state are entirely lack ing. Geologists have always main tained that no minerals existed in the Laurentian mountains, and that those granite hills contained nothing more valuable than the iron like stone of which they are formed.
