A mouse has 1 ng be n known to be the bitterest enemy of womankind. Jnst why the average rnn of femininity ebonld fear snob a helpless, harmless little creature cannot be explained. During the civil war a taincus female fpv was betrayed through the instru nnntalify t ? a mouse. The woman was roiling as a boy and succeeded adi ira iy in deceiving the enemy un til me evening while dining with a party of men at a farmhouse a black mouse jumped from a cupboard to the table, almost in the face of the sup posed boy. With a shrill feminine shriek the spy threw up her arms and rushed across the room, and, springing cn a couch, went into hysterics from sheer fright. The men, of course, sus pected her and, rather than he searched, she ci 1 Jessed, but by the aid of the loy al <Id farmer and Ids w ife she made her escape in the night. A well known woman physician of Chicago says she can do any kind of surgical work without a tremor, but the sight of a mouse turns her stiange ly ill and thoroughly “unwomans” her Another woman has such a terror of mice that she reccDily went insane through fright at one of the wee ere* tun s. The woman was sweeping her cellar when a mouse darted out from an old barrel and ran about her feet. She tried to step on it and beat at it with her broom, calling piteously to her little boy to help her. But the boy, thinking she was in fun, frightened the terrified mouse toward the woman whenever it tried to get away. At length the coy rushed at it in earnest and the mouse darted under the wom an's skirts and she fell to the floor in sensible, only to lose her mind when at length consciousness returned to her.— Cleveland Plain Dealer. NO CHINESE IN LEADVILLE. Two Pi^tailed Celestials Who Were Tabooed by the Town. Every well known nationality except the Chinese is represented in Leadville. Only two Celestials ever entered the camp, and the story of their short stay is unique ar..i interesting. There wasn’t much of a demonstration cn their ar rival. f l it was late at night when they climbed down from the roof of one < f the coach,s into tbo busy streets and hastily surveyed the strange surround ings. Word was whispered abort in the dirts with which the street was lined, and soon the pigtails were encompassed with a quiet and gentlemanly mob of peihaps a hundred miners and hoboes. Scarcely a wcrd was spoken, but as soon i> the luggage of the passengers and the mail.- were taken from the boot «f the G iMupd the-China boys were as sist -d to the seats they had just vacat ed. the driver was given a tip and the distinguish* a arrivals were whirled out of town in much quicker time than they had entered it. for it was a down bill pull to Malta, the nearest settle meat d. wu the gulch. There they were left to shift for themselves as best they might What means of communication with eacbotlnr these strange little people have I know not. but the news of the reception that was tendered to the first representatives cf their race to visit Leadville traveled rapidly, and the fact soon came to he understood by them, in all localities where they congregated in Co’orado. that they were not want ed. I later queried a Chinaman in an adjoining t< wn as to whether he hod ever been in the great mining camp, and his r*pl“ was characteristically la conic “I ito go Lead-v-i-l-lee.
