Free silver as a vital issue is al
ready as dead as the issue of African
slavery.* * If we ever attain free
silver at the ratio of 10 to 1, or any
other ratis, it will be through expan
sion, and through expansion alone;
our Pacific and Asiatic interests fur
nishing a silver outlet for an other
wise barren identity. The anti-trust
game two can play at. The deadly
danger of democracy is the mislead
ing cry of “anti-imperialism.’’
It is the figment of the fancy of a
few old women in Boston and of the
ignorance of a faw unreflecting and
half educated demagogues in the
west and south. If the democratic
party sh< uld adopt it, the party
would have first to surrender to Ag
uiualdo, and then to give itself over
to God, for even Grandma Hoar
could not be relied on to vote tbe
ticket.
