The Northwestern PUBLISHED EVERY FRIDAY AT THE COUNTY SKAT GKO. K. BRNSOHOTRR. I Editor* and GEO. H. OIHftON, I Publlaher* TERMS I—|l .00 PEK TEAK, IP PAAD IN ADVANCE Entered at the Loup City Poatofllce for tran* mission through the malls aa second elaas matter. Official Paper Sherman County Dreytus, the great French prisoner was pardoned Wednesday, and at last is a free man. Judge Kinkaid is a good straight man clean through. You won’t have to hold your nose if you vote for him. The pops in this cominuuity are justly indignant over the nomination of Si. Halcomb for Supremo Judge. Mr. Holcomb's record as an official is so bad that bit own don’t want too muub of him. Let the sixth district elect a man to congress this fall whom we can all respect. “De mortius nil nisei boo um,” is an old adage, but let us make no mistake in the big sixth this fall. Moses Kiukaid is a man who not even the pops can say a word against, but they are getting thoroughly sick of the kind of timber they have had to support tor the past eight year and rumblings indieate a change. Jf lbo republican party at its county convention next Monday will be careful to nam i its best men for nominees there will be an ex cellent chance to elect at least some of them. The disatisfaction that is created among the populists and democrats will cut quite a figure in the result of the campaign. It, as in other counties, the democrats of this county put up a ticket and thereby institute a three cornered fight, the republican candidates will be easy winners. Therefore look to your best men iu the select ion of a ticket. The Sultan of Sulu, one of our new island possessions in the Philippines is a Mohammedan, and has always lived according to the rights of that religion. Although now he is virtu ally an American cili/.eu he is still allowed to continue his lifelong bibits which seems to grieve our home-made Tagals very much, and they take it considerably to heart that Uncle Sain does not change the leopards spots iu a moment. He may have too many wives and a few slaves at present, but it is our opin ion that he is making a better citizen on first trial tban some of the half breeds at home. The Times says that if the Repub lican ticket is elected they can't take the oath of office because they do not support the constitution, there fore every body should vote the pop ticket. Well wouldn't that kill you! The Constitution of the II. 8. says that treason shall consist of ad hear mg to or giving aid and comfort to our enemies. Johu A. Dix said “If any man puli down the American (lag, shoot him ou the spot.” While holy writ say* “woe unto ye hypo crites and Pharaseee." The consti tution says these fellows should be shot, John A 1 hix reiterates it, autl the holy blbte declares that there is a place prepared for them, where there is weeping and wailing au<l gnashing of teeth. Thou should* l •eek thy rvwaid. Oh, lleddicu** The Halt bake Tribune, the ablest free silver advocate on the Pacific slope, cornea wit straight ami clearly tells all who are concerned, that, siuec India la ready to unload her ellver into the beat market *he can ilud, that free silver for Auienee, is out of the question It says a ship load of silver would be shipped U our country on the first opportunity, minted tod exchanged fur gold, lak an bwk and what cuuld we do al*>el it Our wealth goo* a* cording lo the wuelde scale, and we haves m.»* of potnge to polwt to \Y» would soon have all the silver in ex tetawcw W» woul i be nh i« our winds — and the World would help Us Vo (mm agin so !»ig**i the** r». u populists, and then id )ourself where ww would l*u at It is claimed by some populists although not giveu very much pro minence. that Uncle Si Holcomb has returned to the state treasury the money which he drewr out in ex cess of what his house rent cost him' Probably he did, we are not official ly advised upon the matter, but wbat is bothering us is to define the differ ence, as far as the crime is concern ed, in taking the money and return ing it when the storm came or keep ing it, as he would have done, had nothing been said. The question is can a man who would do so be trust ed in our supreme court. It is a no torious fset thst Mr. Holcomb wss elected governor on sn anti-pass platform, yet notwithstanding he used and manipulated, according to his own acknowledgement, as many passes as any man whoever held the office. Hiding on a pass we do not claim to be s crime, but riding into office on the grounds that taxing a pass is s bribe and then stuffing his pockets full of them is lower than stealing from Indians.
