ii glorious victory, ami 1 have went
through it safe so far without a
'f scratch. I aui well and feeling fine.
The fight started at 11:00 o'clock
Saturday night, and at H:00 o’clock
Sunday morning the First Washing
ton entered the battle. We w< re
under a heavy fire all day. The
wav i he bullets sung over our heads
was a caution. About 11:00 a. in.
we were ordered to make a charge
on a knoll, there wus .’100 insurgents
holding it, but we did not know fear,
so away we went. We had to cross
a stream that was waist deep, we.
lost one man in making the charge.
When we got posession ot the knoll
tin* insurgents that were in the tren
dies turew up their b uds, all but
two < r three and I in *, killed three of
my comrades, then we moved to one
end of the trench and poured several
volleys into them. We captured 88,
wounded 15, mid killed 00. The
battle lasted until 1:00 p. m Sun
day, that is the hardest «f it, but
the sharp - hooters were killing off
men ill next day. The fight is still
going on to our right and left but 1
ft don't think we will have any m ire
eng • zeinenis for u while. We lost
4 men from my company, I will give
you their names f< r the papers do
not give them right, also to read Lhe
papers one would think the Califor
nians did it all (Jen. King, gave
us a talk after the battle, he said he
never saw belter work than the First
Washington did, and said when his
official report went in he would give
us full credit for our gallant work
