Is the romance which made Billy Bryan famous. Now he is go ing to snag his craft on the mistakes of the war department. Desperation is being depicted up on the countenance of the wild eyed Oode.'B of fusion. That time for ‘•fooling all of the people some of the time" that they used to tell about is drawing to a close. How easily, even the misplacing of one little letter will sometimes turn facts to falsehood. Last week the Times Indp., wished to state the fact that Greene was done brown at every debate so far. But got an “h" instead of a “w” hence the error. Bill Allen, and Bill Greene are the two windiast winers the fusionists have in Nebr. Two old line demo crats whose ollicial life depends on their ability to keep fusion going. Bill Allen talked fourteen hours, and Bill Greene talks all the time unless those frequent attacks of tonsilitis injures his voice. The populist papers in this state have not regained any of the self re spect they lost ten years ago when they began to vilify everything, and every person that would not howl calamity with them. The people are fast declining to be duped by their ubusive rot. The nearer they see the end approaching the dirtier bocomes their filthy emanations until one would imagine that the American people outside of the pop party were all criminals. The man who can’t see any good out side of his own party needs watching he is looking for something. A man In Illinois by the name of Damrn who belonged to the Modern Woodmen, died last spring and his wife wishing to express her gratitude to the order for their kind treatment and prompt payment of his benefit certificate, wrote a letter to the camp ending by saying that the W'oodmen had the sincere thanks of the whole Damrn family. Below we give two noted populist speeches that were delivered by two different representatives from Slier man count}' during the session of the legislature which they were members oi. First speech in the early nineties; "Mr. Speaker, 1 move that we un hitch for dinner.” Second speech four years later; ‘‘Mr. Speaker, I’m from Sherman county and I own (140 acres of land.’’ (collapse) Those speeches are pub lished by request and their authen ticity guaranteed. The principle issues in the cam paign this fall by which the" present state officers will endevorto persuade the voters to allow them to retain their hold upon the state government is their claim to economy in the af fairs of their offices during the past two years. If their broad assertions could be true they are the greatest money getters the country has vet discovered, that is, if you take their figures for it, commence where they wish to start you in and leave off where they feel inclined to stop. By au ingenious manipulation of figures they seek to convince the voters of this slate with the idea of the im mense amount of money tfiey have saved them during the past two years by thei- wonderful economy, and at the same time leave the inference that the republican officials had squandered everything in sight. For this purpose the secretary of state, and the treasurer and auditor, each a».-ange matters so that they are credited in certain items with the same monies, and thereby show econ omies where none exists. The secre tary af state makes it appear that he has credited in fees, and turnd over to the state the net sum of $20,044 and that his republican predecessor during the same period of time hail only turned over the measley sum of $1.(577 as fees collected by him. That those figures are correct no one will dispute, but this expert jug ler in figures very adroitly stops in time that the unacquainted will not see the gloved hand underneath and is thereby led to believe that the rep ublican secretary had not accounted for large amounts of fees collected, but had put them down in his pocket. But an inquiry into the matter de veloped the facts that a law enacted by the last pop legislature was re sponsible for the whole business and not this eraaculate “reformer.” The law now increases the amount of tees to collect from one hundred, to one thousand per cent. This may sound iaige, but careful inquiry shows that in many instances where no fee was charged at all for executing certain papers the new law makes it from one to five dollars, and where one dollar was charged before ten is the fee under the new revenue law. And further that he fails completely to tell the voters, whom he is trying to deceive, that $13,500 of those fees Were collected trom the Union Pa cific railroad alone for filing the new articles of incorporation. A vast sum that does not come every year and would not have passed through his hands under the old law, but would of been paid directly to the treasurer. Further comment should be unnec essary. All their claims are on the same line. Colonel Bryan, it is announced lias consented to open the Illinois campaign with a speech at Chicago, upon the mistakes of the adminis tration in our war with Spain. When Lincoln was informed during the rebellion that Grant was a hard drinker, he asked the kind of liquor drank by Grant, as he would like to send a barrel of it to each of his Generals. Lincoln knew that Grant was making a success of the cam paign and his answer to the disgrunt led critics was worth more than a two hours speech. Mr. Bryan, as well as the yellow Journals knows that the administration made a grand success of the war with Spain, that the war was prosecuted to a close much quicker than they dared to hope for and cost much less than they dreamed of. They should know that their foolish and dishonest at tempt to make capital out of the few mistakes that was under the circum stances unavoidable will be a Hat failure and will hold them up to the gaze of the world and the judgment of the people of the United States as aiming to gain prestage for them selves by detracting from acts which the whole world applauds. Free sil ver is dead and the “mistakes of the war department” is the only hope for campaign thunder the elements of fusion Know of. There seems to be no mistakes in the manipulation of the government, the republican pol icy seems to be about perfect and is lea us on to ultimate triumph over an obstacles. But the delud ed man that has been voting for fu sion directly and democracy indirect ly at the dictates of Mr. Bryan, a life long democrat, will discover sooner or later that Bryan is the greatest mistake that an omnipitant God has allowed to flourish on Neb raska soil since the grasshopper scourge, KIHJCATIONAL KXH1H1T.
