Oflicial Paper Sherman County A I1UKNING MHAMK. The pop, Comander of the Milford soldiers home has ejected Ira F. Burroughs an old and honored pat riot from the home, for persistantly objecting to the hauling down of the 0 Presidents picture from the wall and placing Bryan's in its stead. And this ti's said with the knowledge and eon sent of Gov, Holcomb. Can this he possable? Is Gov, Holcomb a loyal American citizen and a patriot, would be even permit the taking down of Chief Executives picture from the wall of a public building? If he would we shall call him a traitor to the great cause entrusted to him by the voters of Nebraska. We don't ask tor any • special favors from him,for we did not give bun any at the time he was elected, but we expect equal treat ment and service from him with the (tint dill WI 11 /. it trnilAPU lluCQ II. ed Ins country Cromwell said “get thee gone thou art no Pailiment”. Our revered Lincoln said ‘You could * fool all of the people some of the time” and we say that an old soldier that will vote the pop ticket, or the son of one that will do so in the faee of such treasonable acts astheabovtj, should be examined for softening of the brain. There are some things that are excusable in a pop administration as well as any other, but when it comes to turning old dependant sol diers from the roof that was built | to shelter them by a grnteful people for their past services in their coin try’s cause.it is about time to oalla halt. If the wall was large enough, no one would object to Mr, Bryan s picture decorating it even beside Ms y Kinleys, but if the Governors and the commandant’s po<Jr little souls are to pusslanemous to pay that much re spect to our Chief Executive, they should not be elected to any thing higher than constable; men should not be trust bayond their depth. We hone that the old soldiers and bods of veterans will look this matter up and see that this old comrade and patriot is well cared for antil the time comes that Holcomb will again be loaning money on spotted pigs at three per cent a month and not be disgracing the Gubernatorial chair at Lincoln. Last Saturday afternoon a genu ine street faker struck the town and through a scheme in which he rep resented to be selling some of the best patent medicines made, swind led the people out of about and gave absolutely nothing in return. He was a large, well dressed man, with a wig of long black hair. He wore a high crowned broad rimmed bat and his appearance attracted considerable attention. He called bimself a half breed Indian and to get the attention of the crowd gave a short and interesting account of his life. Tho following poem will give the reader some idea as to the man ner in which he worked the crowd and captivated his victims: T'wus Bui unlay, ami nice and warm, the lust day of the week, When euddenly thera did appear a faker on the street. Ha win mounted in u bu**y. with n proud and atately form. And to his anxloue hearers, said, 'I'll do to you no harm." I have within my little chest (food store of ull thuts nice; I'm sure you'll get your money's worth, the best at u low price. But before I open up my (foods, or yet un fold my plan: 1 11 tell you somethin* of my life, that you may understand. The faker, was a red man, he said he was u Sou lx: Ills father und mother died, you see, as most ull parents do. 11a went to Indian college, whon he wae but a hoy: And there he learned to read und write which tilled his heart with joy. While r,minin ' with histritie he was made chief of the police; Aad more then once he saved the whites from being killed and fleeced. And with these wilcy, flattering words, the people crowded by ; The scene recalled the fable tale of the Spider and the Fly." His talk was interesting, it was catchy, he * was flip; l And he never let up talking till he opened up his grip, Which was filled with bottles labled. •worms," "corns." "bunions.'’ and all that: People looked with satisfaction at his high crowned, broad rimmed hut. Then he told them of the merits of his medi cine and firm. How t would extricate the corn and extermi nate the worm. Then Brown came alow.y treading towards the faker very sly; And handing up a "V” to him, si* bottles for to try. The crowd was very eager and their faces wore no frown: They w ished so much to follow the example set by Browa. So at once they liberally began to buy upon hi a terms: Aad they bought a large amount of that arti cle for worms. They blew in sixty dollars in the twinkling of an eye: They bought hie goods at wholesale but the quality wai shy. m * * * • * It soon came time for him to go, and as the whistle blew: He started straightway for the train, and bade them all adue. But before he started to depart, to everyone in sight; He aiked aloud in thunder tomes, if they to him would write? Aad let him know just how his goods would op. erate or act; To this request Brown's hands went up, and so did Uucle Jack’s. And at he rede away, he turned, as if to have some fun; And holding up his money bag. .said "this is sixteen to one.” The people congregated there from store house and from farm; But the medcine they bought that day was’nt worth a darn. MORAL And now my dear old friends who may these verses read. To cappers, is the future I privy you ne'er give heed. To evil doers turn your back, they’r always on the beat.
