The largest exhibit in the range ol wolf dens, in the New York Zoologlca, park, a great gaunt brute which a few months Ego roamed the steppes and forests of Russia with his mates, ii ably sustaining the reputation of hlf kind for treachery and ferocity. Hii first exhibition of temper occurred last week, and a woman was his victim. She was standing by the cage and ex tended her muff toward It while calling the attention of her escort to the ani mal. The wolf bounded against the bars with bared teeth and hair brist ling with rage. He aimed a vicious blow between the bars at the woman's extended arm. He mlesed her arm by so narrow a margin that he cought the muff In his claws, and dragging it into the inclosure tore It into ribbons. Among the remnants was a purse, the contents of which far exceeded the cost of the muff, although that was valu able. The woman had about recovered from the shock of the beasts' attack when Edgar Stephens, one of the youngest of the keepers, came along and found her bewailing the loss of her valuables. Armed wtti a club Stephens entered the enclosure and secured the purse, the wolf greeting him with an angry snarl, but slinking off on seeing that he was armed. Three days later Aldin J, Lorlng, curator of the mammal depart ment, entered the Inclosure unarmed, depending, as he had often done before, on his familiarity with the animals under his chaige being a sufficient safe guard against attack. The wolf loped about the Inclosure, keeping well away from Mr. Lorlng until he thought the man was off his guard, when the brute sprang full at his throat. Lorlng Jumped aside, but the wolf's Jaws closed on his shoulder and the an imal fell heavily upon him In an en deavor to drag him to the floor. The shatp teeth of the wolf cut through the several thicknesses of winter clothing until Lorlng was able to tear himself free, at the sacrifice of his garments. He slipped out of the inclosure, leaving the wolf snarling over liberal samples of his uniform. The wolf's teeth had grazed his shoulder, but the thickness of the clothing had saved him from any material Injury. New York Sun. Confidential Beauty. While engaged in scientlllc research In Patagonia, Erland Nnr'denskoid ob served a small number of fragments of slate floating upon the surface, packed together In larger or smaller clusters. The surface of the stone was dry and they sank Immediately when they be came wet. The author was not able to Investigate the phenomena closely, but believes that besides the vlslbl bubbles they were surrounded by an envelope of gas, supported by an in significant coating of algae, by whlcr they are enveloped. The greasy surfacf of the mineral also prevented the watet from adhering to them and caused them to be surrounded with a concave meniscus, which contributed to theli floating. Owing to the gathering of so many different classes of persons therein, the Interior walls of churches, school houses, hospitals, ets., are apt to be come repositories of disease germs un less preventive measures are taken. These walls should always be coated with a clean and pure cement, such as Alabastlne, which is disinfectant in its nature and more convenient to renew and retlnt than any other wall coating.
