Ily W. O. rATTBi.ffO-V. A True RcmotTat. The North-Western Catholic frankly confesses it i admiration for Hon. Win. V. Allen, V. S. Senator from Nebraska, Nor is this tulmirulion "Born of benefits received nor fostered by the liojte of fa vors yet to come": but because wa re gard Senator Allen, utterly regardleh of his party label that he wears, aH one of the best 'ecin)ens of tbe true demo crat in American public life today. Senator Allen has a son, who is about 20 years old; and this boy was appointed to a lieutenancy of Nebraska- volunteer.; but the father says that if the boy goes at all, it must lie as a private. The senator when ho beard that his son was commissioned for active service, imme diately telegraphed the Ixjy to resign, and was reluctantly obeyed. He will not enlist as a private in the ranks. Senator Allen mvh he is not willing that bis son shall be given preference over other men because of his olitical influence. "Jf the boy shows himself capable bo can riio from the ranks by merit. But I sliall not permit bim to go in Ha an oilicer before lie proves to the satisfaction of Ins companions that he is entitled to the place," This is our idea of true democracy. It is a glorious expression of the ancient faith, iu shining contrast with the move ment now in progress, to pack the olliccs of the army with the sons of politicians. -:DlS93.i For (,'ouvlenie Sake. Girard, the infidel millionaire of Phila delphia, one Saturday ordered all of his clerks to come on the morrow to his wharf and help unload a newly nrrived ship. One young man replied quietly: "Mr. Girard, l can't work on Sun days." "You know our rule.?" "Yes, I know. I have a mother to support, but I can't work on Sundays. " "Well, stp up lo the desk anil tlie cashier will settle with you." For three weeks the young man could find no work, but one day a banker came to Mr. Girard to ask if h could recom mend a man for cashier in a new bunk. This discharged young man was at once named as a suitable person. "But," said the banker, "you dismiss ed him." ' "Yes, because he would not work on Sundays. A man who would lone his place for conscience's sake, would make trustworthy cashier, " And he was appointed. KI8TH ANNUAL TEACHERS INSTITUTE TO I',K HELD AT HARRISON, sioux co., mm.
