years of age and had been sick for about
three weeks when the final summons
came. Dr. Pbinney was called in to ad-
minster to him in his last illness, but the

him who gave it. The JocrtVALand its

To C!i!y V' h.) h-i.Ve givers t!.e stili
jett i'.ttla thought, wiii ihd des.rahaity
of the study of political science by
women be a mooted question. Tlie rela
tion of the law to the home is very intri
cate, and as stub is certainly a projxr sul
jct of investigation by every woman.
Tile legal relation of husband and wife,
of parent and child, of gaurdian and ward,
master and servant, the hiring of persons
of wills, of property personal and real:
of contracts, p.geneey, legal papers, etc.
are all of more or less interest to all wo
men. I5y study I do not mean ttiat every,
woman .hn!l lieeome a lawyer, far from
it: but that every one so far as possible,
should seek to acquaint herself with thv
common facts and principles of law and
political w-ienee.
This is desirable, first for general cul
ture and information, legal culture and
phraseology are common in our current
literature, in the sermons wo hear and
in lectures.
Asa help to the better understanding
of these, anil nbo to accuracy of thought
and expression it is invaluable.
Second, for the purpose of knowing
one's own personal and property richt.
It is not more than eight years, since a
woman had any I "gal risrht to her own
children in the state of New York.
If the husband for any reason, ( hose to
will the child away from her, he could do
so and there was no law to protect her.
Wherever the old law is still untouched
bystatute,thes.'im condition still pre.
vails. A knwledge of such matters is a
ncseessary preliminary to better cond
itions. Women own and pay taxes on much of
the property in our hind: it would indeed
be interesting to know how many fortunes
have melted away, because of the ignor
ance of their owners.
The foes we fight are t heenemies of the
home, the church. f society, and good
government. Our hat! lefield, whatever
it once was is now and will he in the fu
ture, the political arena. We plead for
greater intelligence along these lines
and urge upon every woman early atten
tion to these vitally important subjects.
How Womanhood Is Honored.
In no count ry are wompn so highly re
spected or treated so courteously as in
America. A lady en n travel anywhere
without an escort, and henr no disrespect- i
fid language or Fnec-rs and she can feel
assured that should an emergency arise
she would he accord's! the amplest pro
tection. 2nd, A true lady al's-.ivs dress
es simply and quietly when in street cos
tume. She do- s not adopt gay and showy
colors and load herself dawn with jwel
ery, which is entirely out of place and
conveys a very great anxiety to "show
ofT" custom Sanctons more brilliant col
or in dress than formerly, but they vhouM
be selec'e 1 wjrti moderation for outdoor
wear. Quiet, subdued shad'js give an air
of refinement and never subject their
wearer to unfavorable erilicisms. 8rJ A
lady should always walk in n easy un
assuming manner, neither looking to the
right or to the left. If any thing in a
store window at tract's her notice she can
stop and examine it with propriety and
then rusuroe her walk. She nevershould
hear a rude remark (much less make one)
or see an impertinent glance, but
should le incapable of appearing to think
it possible that they could be intended for
her.
4th, A lady who desires a reputation for
elegant manners does not giglo or whisp
er in a meaning way in public places, she
reserves all those disagreeable fi-.hions
for a more private place, also loud talk
ing is inexcusable at all times, and gives a
very vulgar tone to what you say. A lady
does not call to her friends across the
street to inquire after their health in a
boisterous fashion Mk.
